  1. AOPA was the cheapest for me being a new pilot. At 200TT and 0 Mooney time I paid 1800.00 for 85k hull. A few of the other agencys quoted me at around 2600.00. Now that I am pushing 400TT and 200 in the Mooney I hope to save a little more this year.
  2. The main things I looked at other than the overall health of the plane was an STEC auto pilot with altitude hold, a 430W and an engine monitor. I bought the plane to take my IFR lessons in so the a/p and the 430W were a must for me (New generation pilot:) The engine monitor in my opinion is worth it's weight in gold and a must on any plane I will buy in the future. Take your time and try to enjoy the process. Good luck.
  3. G's cruise around 135kts (I've read). Mapa has a good write up on their site, on the G, in one of their "Sample log aritcles." Good luck.
  4. OK, that's about where I leave the ground too. I can get it off the ground at around 63k but it just doesn't "feel right." Thanks for the input Jim.
  5. Going from POH memory the rotation speed of my "J" is around 63 knots. For whatever reason my plane is never ready to fly until about 72 knots. I've experimented with flap and trim settings but not much changes. All of the other V speeds are right where they need to be. Any imput?
  6. After looking at different waxes I went with the Rejex a week or so ago. The bugs come off MUCH easier. Looks pretty too:)
  7. When mine are full open they take a little oomph to close them to the trailing position (on the ground or in the air) and hardly no pressure at all to get them closed the rest of the way. I have had to fly with them in trail once due to a hotter than usual running cylinder (420) and only noticed a knot or two difference. The cylinder issue went away on the return flight and hasn't been seen since. I also had a split second engine shutter, like a water droplet in the gas, at about the same time so I figured it may have been some debris in the injector?? Everything else looked good on the EDM.
  8. I'm in the same boat as you guys with the IFR training. Looking to have it completed in June. Good luck you two.
  9. I love mine too. How did you survive without it?
  10. I agree with Scott on this. The 496 is a must for summertime flying, especially buzzing around in the clouds. The situational awereness to the storms is a lifesaver as well as a time saver being that you are not guessing as to wheather or not there is convective activity in your path. I have mine yoke mounted. It has other benefits as well that are nice. I upgraded from an older 296 (w/o wx) that I now use as a backup. You can't go wrong here.
  11. I'm curious what you guys usually shoot for on the EGT on climbout and cruise? I have been climbing full rich (that how I was instructed) and leaning when I set up in cruise but have began experimenting with it a little bit lately. I usually cruise with the EGT around 1350 to 1400 and the CHT hovering around 360-370.
  12. The stall strips on my J need to be repainted. Is it ok to just take out the four screws that hold them on and paint them offsite? Is there any special considerations to be taken when taking them off or re installing them? Thanks.
  13. Interesting article Jim, thanks for the heads up. The article mentions using "Vision" made by Turtle Wax. Is anybody familiar with this product? Any other good wax recommendations?
  14. I started using Camguard after my last oil change and have heard two different opinions on what type of oil I should be using with it. I have been using Aeroshell 15/50 and had planned on putting it back in. One guy is saying is that since the ASL is being used the synthetic aspect of the Aeroshell is not needed and may actually hinder the effectiveness of the ASL so a straight oil should be used. Your thoughts??
  15. Roger that fantom!
  16. Just got in from S. Dakota today. 604 miles in 3:45 with two people and bags at 9500 ft. I flew around Mt. Rushmore last night about 1500 agl and it looked pretty sweet from that perspective.
  17. Good to know...
  18. Ahhh. Thanks Scott.
  19. They are in plain sight under the wind, just a small eyelet to run a rope through like any other plane. (My photo gallery shows me tying down... maybe the pic will help). The POH does say that they can be removed and interchanged with mounts to jack your plane with. As far as finding a new set maybe start by talking to a MSC...
  20. I was under my plane the other day and noticed a small button where the left wing meets the cabin. It's aft about 5" from the leading edge and looks to be some kind of reset button. I can't find anything in the POH or online. What is it??
