  1. I do the same thing. I also found this video useful for IO550:
  2. I didn't know about circuit breakers in the back... are they located close to the batteries?
  3. Thanks I will check but output of this unit should be 20 Amps.
  4. Dan and @carusoam I wanted to do the same thing so I bought the same unit above (model JAC2024 with Cessna style red connector) and I followed the procedure: connect to external power with JAC2024 unit off, master switch on, then JAC2024 unit on. However, the G1000 shows -7 AMPS and the unit's light is green vs yellow/amber so not charging. It may be that the solenoid is not triggered? Is there anything that I can do to solve this? I only have a Master switch no other switch to turn on avionics separately in Ovation. Thanks for your help! JAC2024HC
  5. Love it. Did you use this accessory to the battery? Is it ok for certified aircraft as well? https://www.batteryminders.com/ring-terminal-assembly-rta-2415
  6. By far the most elegant I have ever seen. Did you custom create the plate? If not where can we buy one?
  7. So turn the ALT switch off also when quickly switching from BAT 1 to BAT 2 correct if engine and avionics are on? Usually what I do is turn off the engine and ALT field and master and then if I am on BAT 1 switch to BAT 2 so I am ready for next flight. I thought this procedure would use both batteries and charge them more evenly but from what I read in this thread this may not be necessary at all. Correct?
  8. Done. Very sturdy, welded steel base and brackets, short and easy to disassemble.
  9. I just had my bottle replaced and I have the same problem. Did you have to spray to see this leak? How did you find the culprit?
  10. Nothing on eBay that could work for a Mooney. Is anyone here selling his jacks? I cannot find anything (Alpha 2 jacks) below $840. Meyers are $900... Each. Expensive. No? The same Harvey Freight 3 ton flat base jacks are just $53 each. No wonder people try the DIY route!! If there was a reasonably priced option out there people wouldn't even think about building their own.
  11. Beautiful bird good luck! And enjoy your new one!!
  12. Anyone selling these great looking DIY jacks by now?! These look pretty sturdy:
  13. You may need to subscribe to FlightAware Global. "In some countries, like the United States, owners/operators must complete an application requesting their aircraft to be blocked from public tracking on sites like FlightAware (opt-out). Elsewhere, including in Europe, non-commercial aircraft are automatically blocked. Owners/operators must complete an application requesting that their aircraft be unblocked (opt-in tracking). In Europe, opting-in enables non-commercial operators to track their own aircraft but flight data is never publicly disseminated. Owners/operators located in countries that require opt-out blocking (i.e. the United States) are unable to track their own aircraft once the opt-out process is complete. Owners/operators located in countries that require them to opt-in to tracking (i.e. countries in Europe) lose privacy since their aircraft becomes visible on public sites like FlightAware. Selective unblocking, offered through FlightAware Global, solves both opt-in and opt-out challenges by enabling owners and aircraft operators to track their aircraft while hiding it from public view." https://flightaware.com/commercial/global/
  14. Me too. Let's face it. Truly upgrading a full old steam gauge panel requires research, months of downtime and a budget close to or north of $100k. All good avionics shops have a backlog and I have also seen a few panel upgrades go sideways and turn into nightmares. A risk you don't have with a good factory installed G1000. That's exactly the reason why time would work in favor of a UK student pilot that could use a G1000+WAAS+ADSB+Modern autopilot with no downtime and without being forced to even waste time thinking about an upgrade yet. Honestly for a Mooney I have seen very little that is available (new touch screens maybe?) and is also technically compelling enough while being reasonably priced to convince me to do anything at all to improve my avionics package yet. Hopefully Dynon and others will inject some more value based competition in this space. Same as Microsoft did with IBM and then Apple in my old days. At that point rip and replace will be the only reasonable upgrade path I guess. Personally I don't expect anything close to 20 years and I am ok with another 5 to 10 years of G1000 avionics lifetime.
  15. Ditto. I guess you and I both didn't have to purchase the Mooney factory to do this? So it's doable indeed. IMHO Ovations with G1000 + WAAS + ADSB + GFC700 autopilots here in the US are one of the best deals in the used airplane market and still top of the line standard for so many model aircrafts beyond Mooney that facts speak for themselves. The system is still quite modern, efficient, easy to use, serviceable and somewhat upgradable. Again: As it relates to the topic and the original question above, for a student pilot in the UK to purchase a long body Mooney with TKS and Turbo and also go through a major panel upgrade from steam gauges is an expensive and daunting task. Without considering the down time issue and associated risk and cost. My 2c.
  16. I believe that Don M. mentioned that he designed the timer: https://mooneyspace.com/profile/6879-donmuncy/
  17. Ahahahaha! Sure... And I will be even richer than you I guess since I am quite happy with my G1000 + WAAS + GFC700 autopilot. So I plan to enjoy the top of the line features that I have and spend $0 (vs your -$12k) for a few years and wait to see what Dynon and others will come out with. Let me remind you however that your original statement was related to how modern and serviceable the above combination is. And it is still definitely still quite modern and serviceable compared to most other options out there. In my personal opinion Nxi is a nice to have maybe but the above systems are still up there with the best systems in the market. Upgradability in avionics is an issue well beyond the G1000. But I see that you want to keep up with the Mooneyspace tradition to comment on what you don't fly so I respect that. :-)
  18. Absolutely ridiculous. What can be made. Anything and everything. The real question is why and what price...
  19. Exaclty... A G1000 with WAAS is still the top of the line. Nxi is just a faster chip. I added ADSB out that's all. I don't need anything else.
  20. I use FlyQ since I find it easier to use. I also got a lifetime subscription and the deal was too hard to pass. It does have all the core feature of FF and Garmin Pilot at least the ones that I would use the most. Seattle Avionics | FlyQ EFB
  21. Really? I own one and I find it both modern and serviceable.
  22. Auch... Sorry to hear. It may be a faulty switch then.
  23. Yes simply remove and reinstall the bulb. Took care of this issue for me. Timer worked like a charm after that.
  24. One other Mooneyspace tradition seems to be forgetting who asked the question and what question was asked. In this case the question was asked by a fairly new pilot and it was: "... I would like to fly around Europe, all year round once my certification and experience permits it." The answer to a student pilot transitioning from a Cherokee is yes you may be able to fly all around Europe with O2 and with no TKS and with no turbo for most of the year. No fairly new pilot should fly voluntarily or find himself involuntarily in icing conditions. Period. FIKI or no FIKI. Again here in Seattle and personally I wouldn't fly a TKS equipped light aircraft in our thick, persistent, serious and broad icing conditions. I am not talking summer flying or thunderstorms. I am talking the kind of icing we get here this time of the year and for at least 3 to 5 months per year. Just go check icing in November in PNW and you will get why "TKS is close to irrelevant" here in these conditions. Regardless. His question was about purchasing his aircraft and transitioning from a PA 28. I am sure TKS Mooney are close to magic in heavy icing encounters but for a new pilot in the UK paying well over $75k STC install to get some marginal additional value (maybe - since for a couple of years there is no way for him to truly use TKS to increase number of real flyable missions) combined with the certainty of the additional cost, maintenance, and a 100lb loss of weight doesn't make sense IMHO. Similar trade off's for the turbo. My 2c.
  25. I would think that you could fly an Ovation 3 pretty much to and from anywhere in Europe actually. I have no prob with climbing performance (310HP STC) to well over 14,000 in the Ovation. Beyond that level of course climb performance suffers a bit. It really depends if from UK you want to fly to Italy a lot you don't have to necessarily fly over Mont Blanc so not a real problem. I used to live in Italy and fly gliders over the Alps btw. But that's another story for another day
