EXECUTIVE 21 Decal Placement - 1967F ?
0TreeLemur replied to DCarlton's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
That was going to be my guess, because that's where the "Mark 21" sticker goes on the '67C model. I see that the E uses a smaller font because the space is limited. We went with the period correct Mooney logo on the tail for the vintage. -
Inverter, vacuum control - Brittain system
0TreeLemur replied to FlyingDude's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
That's the vacuum switch that deactivates the PC system when the pilot pushes on the button on the left yoke handle on my '67C. I suspect that it cuts off vacuum to the TC100 port that feeds vacuum to the actuators, effectively disabling the system. -
EDM 900 Remote Annunciator Light Needed
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I think @carusoam is probably right- decimal place slip. This analysis of overpriced parts is well written: https://mooneyspace.com/topic/37526-safe-flight-lift-detector-a-guide-a-rant/?tab=comments#comment-644591 -
This makes sense. At 4 AMU they wouldn't sell any. That's how some vendors say they don't want to sell something, isn't it?

EDM 900 Remote Annunciator Light Needed

Assuming this is not a joke? Machined from platinum alloy? Does it unscrew itself, swipe your card, fill your a/c with fuel, then put itself back on? -
EDM 900 Remote Annunciator Light Needed
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
JPI Support e-mailed this drawing today showing how their Remote Annunciator Light (RAL) is wired. Sure enough, the way I tested it the diodes are fried. Odd. -
EDM 900 Remote Annunciator Light Needed
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Niiice. Thanks. The power of MS comes through again! In another thread (on micro-switch based lift indicator?) one of our fellow MS denizens was talking about markup. This unit is a dual-color LED (probably 5 cents in bulk wholesale) wired to a male 1/8 stereo headset connector (5 cents) with some heat shrink. If made offshore on a contract basis cost < 0.001 AMU materials plus 0.002 AMU labor, selling on Spruce for 0.082 AMU. That's pretty decent markup. Not complaining, just noting. Ordered. -
EDM 900 Remote Annunciator Light Needed
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Yes, looking at the photo it does look the same... I can almost make the P/N out on the photo, but it is a bit too small. Maybe I'll call Spruce and ask them to tell me that info in the morning. -
Because the EDM900 in our M20C is installed more than 8" from the center of the instrument "T", we have the remote annunciator light (RAL) installed in the panel right above the AI. Well I think I need a new one. It stopped working on my recent trip out west. Tonight I unplugged the 1/8" stereo headphone jack that they use to connect it to the EDM900. I used a Fluke multimeter to check continuity on all combinations of the three contacts, and tested both polarities. Figuring that it is just two LED's, there should be very low resistance between one contact (grnd) and the other two contacts. Negative. No current flow detected in any of all configurations tested. I've never dealt with JPI tech support, but what I've read here on MS is that it isn't "super whoopy". I think I bought it from South Coast Avionics. Any suggestions where I can get a replacement? P/N 790547. Thx. Fred

Mooney Pre-J Performance Table

Kewl. I wish my '67C had those Vle, U.L., and 75% power cruise speed values. -
Drone encounter at 7500' today.
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Got a call from the Little Rock FSDO today. They heard from KZME about my report and asked for details. They have contacted the sheriff in that town and asked them to be on the lookout for suspicious drone flyin' folk. Not holding my breath... -
Mooney Down Warwick, NY (N72) 04-28-21
0TreeLemur replied to PeteMc's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
That would be an awesome feature! At most fields that I fly into structures are clustered most often at one end, sometimes at both ends. Very few have much near mid-field. That makes the procedure recommended by @kortopates hard to follow. A mid-field pop-up flag like the (500') flag that pops up on approach would allow for a quick check of IAS. If this is indeed training doctrine, maybe the FAA should recommend painting of a wide stripe at the half-way point along runways? -
Panel Lighting Troubleshooting
0TreeLemur replied to AerostarDriver's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Yes it is! And expensive to prove it. At first I bought a $12 eBay special to test. In ground testing there was a low hum in the overhead speaker with the PWM set below 100%. So, I bought the TSO PWM unit and installed it. Same noise in the overhead speaker. I think the TSO PWM cost about $250. My guess is that my old Terra audio panel is picking up the noise through the dimmer circuit. I could fix the low hum with a new audio panel. But, I can't hear the low hum when the engine is running, and it is below the squelch limit on the intercom. I can take pride in knowing that I installed the TSO PWM module. -
Panel Lighting Troubleshooting
0TreeLemur replied to AerostarDriver's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
We chose to eliminate that big rheostat when we went to LED post-lights, replacing it with a tidy PWM. Eliminated a smoke/fire risk. Might be a good time to do that. -

Paul- This describes me. PPL in '81. Q: How do you teach people to gauge the runway mid-point? When not working to maintain centerline and counter any crosswind, and looking at the ASI, I'm making quick glances at the engine monitor to make sure the engine is producing full power. Trying to estimate an un-marked half-way point seems like it would be really difficult. What's the trick? -Fred -
Drone encounter at 7500' today.
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Not quite. The first one was more similar, but it wasn't just cylindrical. The silhouette looked more like this, which I suppose is just the body of the UAV assuming there were arms holding props away from the body. -

Interesting. The thing that I saw was boxy and tall. More similar to the demonstration helicopter that is flying on Mars. It looked like it had a camera module attached to the top of a Parrot-like system. I suppose there might be photos of my pass on some facebook page right now. Won't find them because MS is as close as I get to social media. I was about 1 NM east of the Clarendon, Arkansas, airport. -
Pisses me off. This afternoon, enroute in VFR conditions east of LIttle Rock, AR, at 7500' I spotted something at my 1 o'clock position, more or less same altitude. At first, I thought it was a large dark bird. As I followed it with my eyes by the time it was at my 3 o'clock position I could tell that it was a drone of some kind. Not a winged one, but more of a helicopter/quadricopter type. But it was BIG. Assuming it was stationary, I'd guess it was maybe 1/4" mile away at most, and maybe one to 2 feet tall. Despite my iPhone laying in the co-pilot's seat, I didn't get a photo-not enough time. I was receiving VFR flight following from Memphis Center at the time and immediately reported it. I as about 1 NM E of the 4M8 airport at 15:07 CDT. There is that video online of researchers at (Ohio State?) shooting a large drone into a Mooney wing at something approaching cruising speed. It does a ton of damage. Isn't it true that a license is required to buy and fly a drone that big and capable of flight thousands of feet above the ground? Why don't those things have an ADS-B requirement?!? I did file an FAA Hotline report. I hope they can find the irresponsible jerk who put a cinder block in the air for me to luckily not hit today... and fine the shit out of them.

Interior refurb ideas please....
0TreeLemur replied to Htmlkid's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
We did it @Hank's way. Had the seats reupholstered too. All panels were repairable except the door panel- we bought a new one from Plane Plastics. -
Sorry. BTW there's a guy in my office who lives on a lake and he keeps urging me to put floats on my Mooney. uhn-un. Na ga happen.

Before Sunday last, I hadn't intentionally flown below Virga since 1981. Sadly, a about 10 NM of it lay between me and my destination. Told my co-pilot, my 25 y.o. son to tighten his seat belt and get ready for a roller coaster ride. Slowed to Va in the descent. Wow... Faith in the Mooney wing. Despite tightening my seat belt, top of my headphones still touched the top of the cabin. Several rapid swings from +1000 fpm to -1000 fpm with no change in attitude. 60-degree roll excursions. The ol' bird felt solid as a rock. The PC system rapidly recovered from roll upsets. Impressive! Sorry no photographic proof. All cabin items were secured, except the CO monitor which got flung off its mount. I need to add some velcro to that system.

Reminds me of the Sven and Ole joke about them going hunting via float plane. They bagged some elk, dressed and strapped 'em to the floats. On takeoff plane just didn't clear the tree line on the far side of the lake. The whole thing goes crashing into the trees scattering debris all over. After he comes to, Sven, who was thrown from the wreckage calls out "Ole! Are ya ok Ole?!" silence, then "Yeah!... I'm ok!" pause. Sven yells out "Where are ya?!" Ole yells back "Oh, not too far from where I landed last year!"

Thanks again to all who replied. I think I've got a solution worked out. MS is awesome. -Fred

Thanks Vance. I'll try and firm something up late Monday afternoon.
