One thing to keep in mind with a mooney is that on approach, the planes are so fast that depending on your plane, you may use your gear to slow you down. I have a m20k and part of my approach is to drop the gear before my flaps to get the speed down so I don't have to pull so much power and shock cool my engine. I also have GUMP 75-80 on my panel so I always keep that in mind as well. It's not a big deal, learning manifold pressure, turbos, intercoolers was the more challenging part for me. gear is easy!

L3 9000+ or Garmin GTX-345?????
Northern Mooniac replied to Marauder's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I just wanted to say thanks guys for being the guinea pigs here lol. I'm getting my aspen 1000 pro installed as I type this along with a flight stream 210 for my gns430w. I have a gtx327 right now and sitting on the same fence as alot of other foreflight/gpilot users. here's my preference. I'm in canada so it's a bit different as we don't have asdb..yet. Aspen: Active Traffic and WX500 (ADSB Traffic and Weather when i'm south) GNS430W: WX500 and ADS-B Traffic iPad: Active Traffic, XM Weather (Via SXAR1), ADSB Weather and ADSB Traffic In reality i'm going to do most of my weather checking on the ipad because it's a large screen and easy to move around, i'll also do more of my traffic checking on there too, however in a climb, or approach I want traffic on the aspen, I don't think I really care what even shows up on the 430. Enroute you are doing to do more checking on the ipad than anything else and it will show everything. Jeez, I think I just talked myself into a lynx! oops. -

Propeller Upgrade or Overhaul?
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in General Mooney Talk
It's also the only prop to actually increase clearance too from what i've found in my readings. -
Propeller Upgrade or Overhaul?
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in General Mooney Talk
I had considered going to a better 2 blade too. -
I'm just working on budgeting for my plane over the next few years and the propeller is something that is due. Just looking for experiences. I'm considering the MT 3 blade because it is lighter and gives more clearance. But some people are of the opinion that they are terrible and wear out faster than aluminum. If I stick with an Alum 3 blade I don't gain any clearance and not sure if it's really worth it. I do have TKS so there is a bit of an extra cost to upgrade that too. What are others doing?
-
For me I also wanted to stop using my stratus and the flightstream does that too. Is it over priced? Yes. What isn't in aviation. for me im also investing in an aspen panel, so I'll get moving maps etc anyway. and don't get me wrong the 440 radios are ridiculous, I may end up upgrading down the road, ultimately for me it came down to budget.
-
In his case, it's a matter of spending $999 on a flight stream or $5999 on an avidyne. That $5000 he cold spend else where and basically have the same features.
-
To each his own I suppose. But I'm going to want that clearance and flight plan in foreflight as well, so whats easier, putting it into the g430 or into foreflight and transferring it. if you use foreflight it's alot cheaper to just keep his 430 and do a flight stream vs a whole new radio.
-
That's just what I read, It would be awesome to have someone chime in and say "foreflight will do 2 way transfers wth an ifd440" my Avionics guy talked me out of it. I'm not going to stop using foreflight, I'm investing in an aspen 1000 pro as well, so what advantage will a ifd440 give me....I just decided to pay the $900cdn for a used flight stream and save my money for speed brakes
-
You also need to double check that the IFD440 can "recieve" flight plans from foreflight, I was told that it can only "send" to foreflight. I looked at switching radios too, and ended up just buying a flight stream instead. Nothing wrong with the 430 and if you live and breath foreflight it's tough to give up.

JPI 700 Temps? Confused
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Got my fuel system checked out today. 2700rpm and 40 inches it ran 24.5 gph. on takeoff at 37 inches I ran 22.5gph. everything is in perfect spec, they found a mag slightly out too, so now I can fly with confidence. It goes in next week to get the jpi 830 upgrade as well, so that will make things a bit easier to monitor. -

ForeFlight 9 SXAR1 - Music
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
*confirmed* the MPOW works. It comes with a hard male to male adaptor as well as a 1ft corded male to male adapter. I've only tested it at my desk but will test on a flight Thursday. -
JPI 700 Temps? Confused
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Once I installed the gami's and the tempest firewires all my heat issues went away. My issue now is that I don't hit 24gph on take off so i'm trying to get my fuel flow adjusted this week. That would be slick to be able to adjust it slightly like that! -
JPI 700 Temps? Confused
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I read through that, going to get my fuel flow, timing and a borescope looked at this Week. The plane is new to me with 200 hours on the engine but the previous owner didn't obey any of this., cyl 6 constantly ran over temp and he ignored that. Gamis fixed it, but hopefully there aren't any issues he created that I get to fix. -
How to update GNS 430 Data Cards
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
My terrain/osb is 10 years old. might be worth doing that this year and go back to regular nav data with garmin for only 149/year compared to 550/year with jeppson. So I don't see the point in jeppson. I'm going to see about a one time purchase with jeppson for my 300xl and see if that is worthwhile. I have no idea how old the data is in there right now. -
How to update GNS 430 Data Cards
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I'm in canada and will be travelling to the US, so I need north america. They will give a pretty large discount to update my 300xl too only 125 for a subscripton, not sure if its worth it yet. Have to see about updating the aspen with them too. -
How to update GNS 430 Data Cards
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Jeppson is more expensive than garmin. $550 for Nav data with jeppson and 149 with garmin or 499 for nav/ter/obs with garmin. So why go with jeppson? -
How to update GNS 430 Data Cards
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I guess this is where I need some advice. I have a gns430w, gnx300xl and getting a nav radio installed along with a secondary cdi. Basically the 300xl is a really fancy comm radio at this point. I'm getting an aspen 1000 pro installed, wonder if it's worth updating to work with the aspen? -

How to update GNS 430 Data Cards
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Can you explain that? I can buy direct from garmin $149 for north america nav or nav terrain obs for 449. Whats the difference to go to jeppson I didn't know this was an option. And how do I program the card? -
I have two sets of cards for my 430, figured out how to buy the updates from garmin, but not 100% sure what I need to update the nav and terrain cards? I think I need this? https://buy.garmin.com/en-CA/CA/p/pn/010-11308-00

JPI 700 Temps? Confused
Northern Mooniac replied to Northern Mooniac's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Happy to report that the installation of gami injectors and tempest fine wire injectors has solved my heating issues. We are also able to use lean of peak as well. During Climb im using 37" MP, this is giving me about 1000ft/min with 2 souls and full fuel. However only using 20gph for fuel. It seem slow but the plane is performing well. During cruise we were using the Merlyn power chart with the Turbo Plus chart to determine how much MP based on the differential. at 8000ft we were able to get 165kts on ROP using 1550 TIT and 13-14gph, on the lean side we hit about 150-155kts with 1550 tit and 10gph. Now that the engine is running well we need to do some tweaking but i'm waiting to get my jpi 830 to do that.
