I have run some other forums and you could set specific groups to have access to specific forums. That enabled us to have public, private member, admin, etc forums. It has been expressed by some members that they would prefer not to see the Rants and Raves threads at all, which isn't possible if using the "Unread Content" function. If that could be done here on MS with the Rants and Raves forum (opting in) then those that didn't want to see the threads come up in the unread feed wouldn't see them. I know the "don't click on it" principle but as it is now, the thread title and first couple lines of the post automatically appear.

I agree with others that it is just asking for trouble. There's a reason they say "Don't talk politics and religion at the dinner table." This reminds me of last November when I went to AZ for my Dad's 75th birthday. I was at my parents house before going over to one of my sister's homes for the party. My dad and I were discussing politics and my mom chimed in with "Please don't talk politics at your sister's tonight" because she knows there are some very strong opinions on both sides. (Six siblings and we don't all agree on everything) Everyone knows the other's opinions, and really no amount of debate (civil or otherwise) will probably change it so there's no point to hurting friendships over it. I think that what will end up happening is that things will be said in that forum and even if those are not shared elsewhere it will affect the way some think of others and interact on the rest of the forum. It may even have someone ignoring a thread in the rest of the site or blocking a user that they would not have blocked otherwise. I think of all the advice and knowledge I have received here and am grateful for it. What if I had offended someone in the rant and rave forum and they blocked me, then later I had an actual question/problem I needed help with and that person who had an answer that could help never saw my post because they had blocked me? I guess then that would be my loss, but it would also be a loss to the rest of the community here. I have had many questions resolved by searching old posts (in Google put in mooneyspace followed by your search and it works great) and some of those old posts would likely have been different had there been the rant and rave section all along. This will likely go the way of some of the other forums where the loudest and most obnoxious drive away the others and the usefulness diminishes. There's a reason I spend most of my time here than the other aviation forums, it's just been a good community.

Took my wife and youngest son on their first ride in our Mooney. A short hop over to French Valley for a late lunch/early dinner. Pictures and the story are over on my blog. Put together a short video from the photos and videos my wife took on our phones. French Valley Dinner Run

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I think I will add that to my shut-down checklist.
-
This makes sense, but from what you had said earlier I had a follow-up question (or two). I also always shut down per the POH using the mixture cut off. Some of you are doing what you're calling a P-Lead check prior to shut down. I'm not trying to argue, I'm just a new pilot trying to learn as much as I can. From the sounds of it, the P-Lead check, momentarily shutting the ignition switch off prior to cutting the mixture, shows that the P-Leads are not defective if the engine tries to die. Wouldn't that then mean that if you did try to kill the engine with the ignition switch that if the P-Lead was defective (allowing a possible accidental hand prop and start from residual fuel) the engine would actually not die? Likewise, if the engine does die from turning off the switch then wouldn't that show the P-Leads are not defective and therefore the engine wouldn't restart if there is residual fuel and someone turns the prop?

So there is plenty of mention about the EGT readings rising during the mag check. I'm just new to this and watch the RPM drop as per the POH when doing my mag checks on run-up. The POH does't say anything about the EGT rise during the mag check, so what values should I be seeing in an O-360? And is it worth noting it at all since I only have an EGT coming off one cylinder, not a full monitor giving me readings from all four?

My "Flightseeing" trip last Sunday. Going to take my wife and son flying tomorrow. "Flightseeing" - Was that Wind Shear?

My experience has been that my D handles a forward slip pretty much like the Cherokee 140's/180 that I trained in. I've never flown, or been in a long body Mooney, but the short body Mooney's are a blast. -
Would love to... but Sundays are busy with church/family. If there's another one on a Saturday within a few hundred miles of SoCal I'll be there.

I think the answer is "It depends." I took my check-ride for my PPL at 46.7 hours and bought my Mooney at 60.6 hours total time. My insurance required 10 dual and then 5 solo before carrying passengers. I was not comfortable with it at 5 hours dual, but by the time we were at 7-8 hours I was feeling very good about it. I don't think they are tricky to fly, they just don't like to slow down. I think I still slow down sooner than I need to before entering the pattern but that's because I am still getting used to how long I really need to slow it down (I'd rather be at pattern speed before getting to the pattern than trying to slow it down as I enter the pattern). However the more time I spend in it the better feel I get for the speed control. Just don't try to land with too much speed. I did that once, bounced twice, and went around. The next one I was much more careful on my speed and it was better. Do the 5 hours that are required and if you still don't feel comfortable do a few more hours with your CFI until you do feel comfortable. -
I like the site but I get an error with your link. Looks like they don't have it set up to redirect if you have the "www" in front of it. Try this one: https://sua.faa.gov

C model getting harder to start
Skates97 replied to Oldmooney's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I start my 65D the same way as neilpilot and works well. When all else fails, read the directions (POH). -
Thanks, I'll give it a try next time I'm flying and it decides to act up. Nothing in the cigarette lighter but if I decide to use a USB adapter sometime in the future I'll be sure to check that if I have interference problems pop up.

People do the same thing, find a good plastic surgeon and have some work done in an attempt to fool people into thinking they are 40 years younger... I'm personally a fan of the classic look. Maybe change the colors a little if you want, but the overall scheme I think looks great on the older planes. (classic = classy)

2,550-2600 RPM max after changing plug wires
Skates97 replied to Skates97's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Thanks, it may be the cheapest trip I ever make to Aircraft Spruce... -
I don't think it has a manual squelch, or if it does I have no idea what I am looking for (a real possibility). No charger in the plane. The static will go away on its own without any changes to anything else and I can sometimes fly for an hour without a problem and sometimes it's only 10-15 minutes before it pops up for a few minutes.

I have old stuff in my plane, but for the most part it seems to work well. The Nav/Com is a Narco Mark 12-D and most of the time is great. However from time to time it seems to get "stuck" like it is receiving a transmission. I can still make a call they can hear me just fine and as soon as I release the push to talk button the static is back. If a radio call comes in it is clear and as soon as it is over the static is back. I can switch the audio panel to Nav 2 and it's fine but when I go back to Nav 1 the static is still there. Eventually after a few minutes it's gone and everything is back to normal. It sounds to me like possibly a loose connector, but before I went poking around I thought I would see if anyone had any ideas.

2,550-2600 RPM max after changing plug wires
Skates97 replied to Skates97's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Anyone know the actual clamp size? I could just stop by Aircraft Spruce on my way to the airport next time I go. If not I'm guessing it's stamped on the clamp, just trying to save myself going to the hangar and then back to Aircraft Spruce. -
Good point, thanks. I'll have to swing by Homedepot and pick those up and swap out the locknut that I had on it. If I remember right just a couple weeks ago when MHemperly was in Camarillo for breakfast there was an FAA guy doing ramp checks.
-
On most of them I get the horn for 1-2 seconds right before the mains touch down. Those are the nice smooth landings, if only I could get them all that way... Just need more practice.
-
Great write-up, I enjoyed reading it. I've had my plane for about 1 1/2 months and I'm still getting used to the sight picture in level flight, but I love every minute of flying it.
-
Ok, I'm a little behind in posting so this is actually from last week. Just some landing practice but had a great time. Made a short video but it is a little bouncy where I had the GoPro mounted. http://intothesky.us/2017/01/21/smoother-landings/ I got to fly this morning too and finished up my insurance required solo time. I took a "flight-seeing" trip (to borrow a term from I think it was @Hank) up around Big Bear. I found a way to mount the GoPro to the tie-down under the wing for about $5 worth of washers, a stud, and a locknut along with GoPro mounts I already had. I just need to write it up (complete with a cross-wind landing and a little wind shear) and edit the video. In the mean time here's a couple picks from my phone today. 2,550-2600 RPM max after changing plug wires
Skates97 replied to Skates97's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I don't know... It's an L shaped bracket and just has that little section that looks like it was filed out of it. I guess somewhere in the past 50 years someone did that to route a cable or something by there without it rubbing on the support. Maybe they had something at one point running between the cable and the support? Your guess is as good as mine. I'm finding out, as I'm sure many of you have, that with an old plane there are all kinds of "odd" things. -

The outer cable wasn't loose, but you can see in the picture where it had wiggled its way up. Here the cable is back down where it belongs, the set screw hits the stop now, and I'm getting the full 2,700rpm! Thanks for pointing me the right direction. -
Congratulations, and I love the name! I'm still trying to figure out what to name mine...
