Hello Mooney folks, Had a great flight this morning for business with auto pilot working fine. Then came home tonight and tried to engage autopilot but I had no command to the flight controls and no altitude hold. The magnetic autopilot switch would engage and I could slew the heading bug and watch the flight director cue move accordingly but the flight controls and yoke acted as if the autopilot were not engaged. Pressing test I would get the 5 beeps for the trim and all associated lights on the display. Ground test did not work also. I have a call into autopilot central in Tulsa for tomorrow. Thoughts?

KCS-55 Compass System For Sale
anthonydesmet replied to anthonydesmet's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Hah! Marauder, EXACTLY! I did have a very tough time with the decision going to the Aspen. I grew up with steam gauges in the Tomcat and it felt like selling my soul when the Super Hornet came around and this felt similar. I really appreciate the comment...... -
Fellow Mooney Pilots, Last September I upgraded to an Aspen Pro 1000. While I was refinancing my airplane for a wing reseal my KA-102A DG went AFU. So it was either find an overhauled or "worked when pulled" 102A for $2400 to $3200 or go for an upgrade. Since I was already down the road for the wing reseal and my pockets weren't deep enough for a complete Garmin overhaul I decided to add in the Aspen (awesome piece of gear by the way). The HSI was overhauled at my previous annual in 2015 (August 10, 2015 stamped on the HSI) by mid-continent and worked great when pulled (September 2016). I am also throwing in the flux gate (KMT-112) with it's bracket and the KA-51A slave meter if anyone needs one and hasn't transitioned to the KA-51B yet. Serial numbers are in the picture but are: HSI: s/n - 15189 p/n - 066-3046-01 KA-51A: 131101 p/n: 071 1053-03 KMT-112: 37435 p/n: 066-3063-01 I am asking $1200 so let me know if you have any questions. I have also posted a pic of logbook entry of when it was pulled.

Avionics Panel Shock Mounts
anthonydesmet replied to anthonydesmet's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
GENIOUS! Thank you. -
Hello Forum, I need to replace a couple of my shock mounts on my panel (pilot side upper left and lower left). I have part numbers and diagram from my service manual but just wondering if anyone has done this could give me some insight of what I am getting into. Looks pretty strait forward but would like to hear from people that have had hands on. If there is already a post on this that someone knows about please pass. VR,

Hi Paul, i just went through the same thing. My KA-102A went belly up after I overhauled my HSI last annual. I was doing a refy on my plane for tank reseals so I bit the bullet and took the rest of the equity for an EFD 1000. My unit cost was 10,500 and it included the converter and everything the avionics guys needed to synch my KFC-200 and 430W. They do have to remove everything inside to run the cables to the new antenna. I actually kept my KFC vacuum AI as my stand by. We had to slide the storm scope over to the left and put the AI in its place so I did not purchase a back-up. I am eventually going to an electric like the L3 500 version possibly but now just saving some $ and waiting to see what happens in the avionics market. I figured my current AI would give me a little breathing room. My labor cost was $3600 so I don't think you are too far off. I have been very pleased with the 1000. I grew up looking at altitude and airspeed tapes in the Navy so it wasn't much of a change but I know some folks have a little bit of challenge. The HSI is outstanding and the options available to you for instruments flying is great. You won't look back once you start flying with it.

Mine took 2.5 weeks at wetwingologists. Hurricane Mathew delayed start a few days. It did sit for 4 days also with fuel once he was finished. An additional recommendation I have is that once you do have your tanks resealed. I HIGHLY recommend having your mech or where you get your wings sealed also clean your fuel injectors for non aspirated. My sealant was so bad the last few months I had a lot of little particles and I could tell by my JPI that I had something going on. When we cleaned the injectors they were a little clogged. I have a nice even spread on all 6 now.
-
Pretty much why I ended up wetwingologists. Have a 2nd house in Florida about a 1.3 flight time and commercial back to Virginia with mileage points after drop off. Wetwingologists does have 24 years of service and a great reputation. I also know Paul at weep no more is very highly claimed. I think if I was also going to do other upgrades at the same time as the reseal (dreaming that I had bottomless pockets) like interior, glass, annual at the same time I probably would have went to Paul and Bruce Jeager.
-
Had mine resealed at wetwingologists in Ft Lauderdale. Does Mooney's only. Also has a 7 year warranty. Couldn't be happier. From my research I think you are on solid footing if you go with Weep No More, Dugosh or wetwingologists.

Mooney Prebuy Recommendation -- North Florida
anthonydesmet replied to MisfitSELF's topic in General Mooney Talk
I am based out of Marion County (X35)/Dunnellon just north of Crystal River. If the seller does not want to take it far I recommend Ron at Red Sky Aviation at X35. He has a lot of Mooney experience. Including mine we have 6 based there as well as a few returning annuals that I see fly in. He also did a major corrosion repair on a local J. My personal opinion is that as the buyer you should be able to take it where you want to if you are covering costs but sometimes these things happen and people are particular. So if you need someone real close to Crystal River I am just offering up Ron as an option. I will be back at X35 the week of the 7th so please let me know if I can assist anyway. Florida Oxygen and cheap fuel at X35
anthonydesmet replied to anthonydesmet's topic in Florida Mooney Flyers
Thanks Teejay, that's a good point. I will mention it to John tomorrow and see if he can update AIRNAV with Ron's business info. As and FYI for all the folks reviewing the post, it will still take some pre-coordination to make sure Ron is there to top you off. It's not like pulling into Signature and asking the reception folks behind the counter. Thanks Teejay. -
Hello everyone, I am a little delinquent in posting this update. But at my home airport, Marion County Airport (X35), Ron with Superior Air Services is set-up to top off your built-in bottles and portables with aviation grade oxygen. I topped off with 1200PSI for $45. Plus gas is also some of the cheapest I have seen. Currently priced at $3.33 for 100LL. Ron's number is 352-222-9135. John Helms is the airport manager for all other services and his is on Foreflight

Aircraft Insurance pole
anthonydesmet replied to anthonydesmet's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Gents, Thanks for all the responses. George took it up with Jim while Rachel did a little digging and I just heard back from Rachel from AOPA and the rate change was solved. They credited me for my 3100 hours of special crew time in the F-14 and F/A-18 which has significantly reduced my rate. Rachel has been very responsive. From reviewing the posts it sounds like everyone is comfortable with their insurance as long as the have 'their guy"when rates are pretty comparable. I think that's the bottom line, knowing you got a name and a number of someone who will look out for you or at least answer your questions when you're unsure. Thanks George and fellow Mooney pilots. -

Hello Folks, Time to renew my quote again for another year. However, this year I was more excited than my first two years of mooney ownership because now I have over 200 mooney hours and 800 PIC hours.....so I had thought...more later. I am in the middle of inst. rating also. I'd like to hear who is using which company for insurance and also interested in options other than AOPA. I have been loyal to AOPA the last couple years however a couple things have been frustrating me: 1. This year and last year I had sent in my renewal application and I had to follow up with emails a week or so later asking if my quote has come back from the underwriters. Both emails were answered with a reply for me to fill out another renewal application because they said they did not have one on file. When I pressed both responses I did finally get an answer of "oh yeah, here it is". Once I understand but two years in a row seems odd. 2. When binding last year I had to follow up twice with emails off an oil rig (close to the 11th hour of insurance expiring) to get a copy of the final insurance paperwork. One was answered again with, we don't see a renewal request from you after I had binded over the phone before going offshore for work. 3. I have a hangar both in Virginia and Florida and when I tried to change my Virginia airport and add my Florida airport last year it took multiple email and a couple phone messages to get a copy of the insurance riders to the airport managers. It just seems like I have to pull teeth a little too hard to get anything from AOPA in regards to insurance and it worries me that if (knock on wood) I really had to use my insurance it would be a little too frustrating....and who wants that if you are in an unfortunate situation. I really don't think it is associated with ineptness but more seems like they are understaffed. Because when I do talk them, everyone I have talked too is pleasant, professional and knowledgeable...but its just a little too hard. Ok, now the situation that prompted this post. As I mentioned I am going into year 3 of mooney ownership, I have added 200 hours of complex time and I have 200+ hours of mooney time with around 800 PIC team in addition to my Navy special crew F-14 and F/A-18 time (which doesn't count for a lot). However, the renewal quote i just received is $880 more than last year and $380 more than my first year of insurance with zero mooney hours. I've had no FAA issues, accidents, driving issues and I am still under the same medical exam as last year with no medical issues. I also just executed my BFR last month. Instrument check coming at the end of July.

Steve, i just started a job that will allow me to use my mooney in and around the mid-Atlantic. In the next month or so I can try and pop in as well. Although I am flying a turbo you can still get the feel for the the airplane. I also pulled the cables of a 172 around the pattern since 1996 up until 2 years ago when I purchased mine. Once you feel how a mooney flies you will love it. If you want to talk about the purchase process feel free to pm or call. Although you will get great input here. I am up in Va Beach
