  1. Here is another perspective on the Q whether to overhaul or just replace cylinder. You have to have confidence that whatever repair you choose will give you peace of mind and confidence that you have a safe engine. The engine is past TBO, regardless of any repairs done in the past, bottom or top, they still don't count as an overhaul. You can rationalize it as such but that engine has reached TBO w/out an overhaul. And now it failed... Ask yourself this, what will it take for you to feel safe and your passengers safe. This is just my opinion for what it's worth...I would not do anything short of an overhaul on that engine assuming it was a good candidate for it, if it's not then I would get a new or an overhauled engine. But that is just one opinion...other folks are more comfortable w different angles, I am not. I am am victim of my background and experience, single engine is a different state of mind, specially when you don't have the chute or the ejection seat option again just a thought, hope it helps. vr Loogie

  3. Gorilla glue makes a 2" transparent tape, it is very strong and works well on any surface. I used it to patch up a flap fiberglass fairing until I replaced it. Same in my old Maule, it makes a nice repair that is virtually transparent. Great option vs duct tape. Although duct tape is incredibly useful as well! I patched a wingtip in the bush that a rock popped up and damaged on a cub. tape, Phillips, flat head, 2 vice grips, wire, air pump, can pretty much get you out of trouble in a lot of places my bag has a collection of tools similar to steve65c
  4. Much easier if you have your mechanic change the oil, it's the "dripless, painless" option!
  5. That Maule was lucky not hit the prop, would have been rough fixing a prop strike at 7900msl!!

  7. Was wondering if anyone has their right side nose wheel door get some oil on it; after I fly it, it gets some oil streaks. The left side has the vent tube and I get some drips after I shut down. But the right side nose gear door gets some streaking, no abnormal oil consumption btw, my engine is happy at about 6 1/4 QTs. Any suggestions on how to either reroute the streak of oil or make it stop? Does this happen to anyone else?

  9. I told a chaplain that was getting a ride in my F16 trunk to eat bananas, they taste the same going in or out. He said I want to pull 9 Gs , do acro and go Mach I, even if I'm dieing back here, I may never have a chance to do this again. He hung in there for the loop and barrel roll, but lost it in the aileron roll...manager to buck up for the 9G turn, and we headed back at Mach I...msn accomplished. He did tell me later bananas tasted different going out, so much for that theory... most folks not used to acro, loose it.. Loogie
  10. I am going to add oil temp and pressure to my JPI, can any of u smart folks confirm all I need for the task is these two things from spruce (see pic)? Also, I need new engine mounts, do I need anything else other than the Lord mounts I am ordering? My mechanic will do the work, but just want to make sure I am covering all the bases so the annual is not extended due to ordering parts. thanks Dave

  13. I am planning on replacing my right sight cowl flap, it was repaired before I bought it due to a small hole, but cosmetically it doesn't look perfect. Looking for a replacement, if anyone has any leads or cowl flap itself, please pm me. Thanks

Flew back this am from "western NY", falls were nice, and we also flew over Attica, great food was had by all, enjoyed the "cool wx" and got hit by some serious humidity on way back. Thanks for the suggestions, probably do roscoe NY next time after dropping wife in CT, need some fly fishing...
  17. Thanks for the gouge! We are flying to Batavia because my bride's grandpa is getting a memorial from the firefighters in Batavia. He died from smoke inhalation, no Scott packs yet, great guy from what I've heard. We will be flying back to KAKQ on Thursday so I thought we would find a nice cheery place for lunch. Erik, that's funny, north of SYR is really upstate! But thanks we need to head southish. We will save that for later when leaves are changing! Marauder, will try at least one of those options! CAVU might be an option, on RTB!

That 172 will handle a x-w way better than a Mooney, it is also very flexible in terms of grass, dirt etc. That plane can help you build airmanship; granted they are not sexy, but there is a reason there are thousands of them around. Great airplane to build your bag of experience. However a Mooney is good looking, faster; but requires some more demanding aviation skills. As long as there is good training involved a Mooney would not be a problem.
  20. Take a look at your vacuum pump and if it is original, I would also suggest looking at your vacuum lines behind your panel, if they are original as well, you might want to consider replacing them.

  22. Well, I realize there are a lot of questions about the speeds fighters use below and rules that apply. I flew F-16s for 28 yrs, so let me pass some info that may clear some answers. USAF fighters are not exempt from FARs whatsoever, there are some different rules though that allow fighters to operate faster than 250, they have to do with training and ability for the a/c to maneuver effectively. When a MOA is actively being used for training, the fighters are probably using tactical air speeds etc. Feel free to fly through a MOA anytime but be aware if it is active you are flying in high threat airspace. If you are IFR they won't push you through an active MOA unless the mil users agree to that. If you are VFR it's see and avoid against tactically painted a/c designed to absorb light and are difficult to see and avoid. When a VR route is active, same applies for VFR traffic, you could see fighter there low level 480kts plus etc. fighters do a good job at detecting traffic and avoiding it most of the time GA doesn't even know they were avoided etc. Not a perfect world, radars can miss targets so looking out the window is a big deal for fighters and GA. Fighters will not intercept GA on purpose, and many times what feels like a dust off is a result of a short range detect and avoid manuever. Remember these fighters are not out looking to mess with GA, they are there training doing something that has a purpose; like checking out a new wingman, flling a low level square or a myriad of other things that need to be completed etc. I know this doesn't make anyone feel better that the Cessna got run over, there are a lot of questions, why did the f-16 not detect the threat on his radar etc. Well who knows, where was the pilot looking? his radar may not have been looking in the right place, his el strobe pointing wrong direction etc, we will find out after the investigation. For that matter where were the Cessna pilots looking? Etc Having been around many midairs in my career, let me assure you they all have a a common thread, (clearing your flight path). As a GA pilot, always be aware of the airspace you are flying through, in many cases in my fighter cockpit we had to stop large axcercises for the little guy chugging at 120kts right through the middle of a 4 v 4 fight in a MOA. Big sky theory works most of the time but we can help ourselves by knowing when we (GA) are operating in a higher threat environment. Driving through MOAs that are active, vfr w no flight following is probably one of the most dangerous things GA pilots do. Hope this helps some of the questions...
