  1. I am not sure what version lamp I had for testing. Whelen gave me several different lights to play with. Here are some photos of the G3s on other aircraft and you can expect similar results.
  2. Correct, Whelen launched the G3 last summer at Oshkosh. Prior to the G3, the Pro was Whelen's top of the line landing light but the G3 outperforms that for a much more attractive price.
  3. They blow Aerolites away. The photo you provided shows the Aerolite compared to a second generation Whelen Parmetheus Plus. The new Whelen (also WAT) G3 is the third generation and is two and a half times brighter than the second generation Parmetheus Plus. Additionally, here is the G3 compared to the Aerolite when I took them out to the airport to compare. Same exact camera settings on a tripod (shutter, aperature, ISO, color balance, etc.). These three photos show the Aerolite, G3 LED landing light, and G3 LED taxi light. The first image is the G3 taxi light, second image is Aerolite, third image is G3 landing light.
  4. Here is the new Whelen G3 versus the AeroLED. The G3 is $250 cheaper a lamp so save $1K and buy a lot of airplane gas with a better performing lamp. I have them in stock and have outfitted many Ovations and other Mooneys with dual PAR-36 lamps in each wing. I highly recommend a G3 landing and a G3 taxi in each wingtip.   5. It is not an identified item in the preventative maintenance section of the FAR. Additionally, going to fluorosilicone to me, is a minor alteration, requiring a logbook entry by an A&P mechanic.
  6. You do not have to toss fluorosilicone o-rings on an annual basis. I don't understand why you would install buna-N o-rings that immediately start to break down and have to be replaced on an annual basis over a difference of $10 a cap?
  7. I carry the blue flourosilicone o-ring fuel cap kits and most Mooney aircraft need my Shaw 431/531 fluorosilicone o-ring kit. They are $14 a kit and I have them in stock. They come with the large and small o-ring, along with a new cotter key. I have had the original fluorosilicone o-rings on my fuel caps of my Bonanza for 7 years with no signs of deterioration and I have left the aircraft out in heavy rain with no fuel contamination. Your current fuel cap washer is a stainless steal ring that wears down your plunger making it challenging to close properly and more difficult to open and close. These things are a little pricey but they are miracle works. Most Mooneys need the -2 kit that comes with 2 washers.

  11. I just clarified with WAT - if you install it utilizing the PMA authority, the owner/operator can do it with a logbook entry (no A&P or A&P/IA required).
  12. Yes their PMA is for both Design and Production. Here is the Design narrative: "The design approval phase of PMA certifies that a replacement or modification article complies with the airworthiness standards of eligible products (aircraft, engine, or propeller). The applicant shows this compliance through tests and computations unless the article is identical to the article design on a type-certificated product. Identicality means that an article is the same in all respects to an article design in a type-certificated product. Evidence of license agreement shows this identicality."
  13. It's really just swapping a bulb. The reason why there is an STC is because your traditional incandescent bulb was considered a standard part. Changing from incandescent to LED drove an STC for an airplane manufacturing company (also PMA). It is the least risky avenue to do it for them. You don't want to get caught by the FAA for manufacturing unapproved parts.
  14. It should not require a new connector. You will take the existing power and ground connector (round electrical connector) and hook them up to the G3 power and ground posts.

Not to muddy the waters anymore, but you can install a PMA'd part without an STC and it is becoming more common now to have parts that are PMA approved that carry no STC (they might be TSO certified, etc.). So one could install the PMA with a logbook entry as the installation authority versus the STC (major alteration and a 337). So I interpret the G3 as having two pathways to installation (STC and PMA). I installed my G3 PAR-46 lamps on my Bonanza with a logbook entry citing the PMA authority. It is literally like replacing an incandescent bulb (power and a ground wire hookup).   16. The new G3 PAR-46 has both a PMA and STC. The PAR-46 G3 is an exceptional light emitting around 250,000 candle power. See attached. G3_PAR46_PMA.pdf
  17. It covers all of them if you have a recognition light in the wing tip. It will not be STC or TSO certified so installation basis will be a minor alteration. They will be manufactured under WAT’s PMA.

  22. Greetings! Yes, the rumors are true and Whelen Aerospace Technologies (WAT) will be shipping soon an LED recognition replacement light. I am a WAT authorized dealer and I am taking 10% deposits to secure the first orders. They will be $231.20 each plus $15 shipping. WAT has communicated to us that they will be shipping them toward the end of the year. I worked with WAT and another Mooney owner to fit check some prototype lights. Thanks to all of you, we were able to all collectively influence them to do the project.
