Thanks! I enjoy flying the drone but I don't do it often. Makes for good airplane photos to show you how it looks! When I started providing Whelen these drone images they went out and got a drone for themselves and now you see a lot of their material with drone shots.

Actually had a M20J owner pick up a PAR-46 G3 because his 22 year old HID BoomBeam had finally worn out. That vintage BoomBeam does somewhere around 200,000 candela power while the G3 LED emits 250,000 candela. When HID work they do a good job but there are power ballast, sensitive lamps, and other components that eventually wear not like LED. They are generally very reliable but not as good as LED. So he'll just run a new power and ground wire and put the G3 in. More simple and less heat. Here is the G3 performing on my Bonanza (granted I have 3x PAR-46 G3 and 2x PAR-36 G3s running in this photo).

I'm not sure if they are doing one? There are not very many PAR-46 equipped aircraft out there, the numbers are low. The new Duo requires a lot of new wire run and a new switch so it's not quite the drop in replacement like the G3. Additionally, it's not quite as powerful. It does have a replaceable lens like the Parmetheus and Parmetheus Plus but the G3 has a more durable lens. I'm going to install a pair on the main gear of my Bonanza to try them out. They'll work well if you have a single lamp PAR-36 equipped aircraft (Piper comes to mind) and you want to run new wire and add a 3 way switch.

You'd be surprised but cooler air gets in there. An aerospace engineer at AeroLEDs proved it to me. The Pro came from Lopresti and was renamed the "Pro" when they merged with Whelen to create Whelen Aerospace Technologies. It's an older more expensive lamp to manufacture. It does dissipate heat better on the back of the lamp but all of those measurements were taken in a static lab with no airflow. AeroLED is particularly bad because they have a very small heat sink. Airflow helps cool it but the heat sink is important. The G3 is a better lamp for the money. The Pro will eventually be totally discontinued and the G3 will take its place as it still has some corporate jet certifications the G3 does not have. Do XeVision lights even carry an STC or PMA?

Thanks guys! @toomany I am a Whelen Aerospace Technologies dealer and I carry the new G3 LED landing and taxi light. They are the best LED lamps on the market for the money and after flying behind it and the Whelen Parmetheus Pro, I believe the G3 is sligthly better. The graphics previously provided were taken in a static lab so when you get airflow over the lamp and the lens, it will help reduce that draw down by cooling the lamp. Below are some photos of the G3 in action on various other airplanes. I have them in stock and ready to ship at $299 each. Orders over $500 ship free and I do not charge sales tax. If you have any issues I fix them for you. I would put one G3 LED landing light in each wing and a G3 LED taxi light next to it. The landing light G3 has a 12 degree spot light while the taxi light has a 50 degree flood light. It will work out very nicely for you. https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/WAT-14V28V-G3-PAR-36-LED-Landing-Light_p_189.html <-- Link to the G3 LED landing light on my website https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/WAT-14V28V-G3-PAR-36-LED-Taxi-Light_p_190.html <-- Link to the G3 LED taxi light on my website gallagheraviationllc@gmail.com <-- Email me 1-833-425-5288 <-- Call me

Landing Lights: Whelen LED vs Aeroled or others
OSUAV8TER replied to Greg Ellis's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
When you're taxiing around a poorly lit airport, I'm sorry, I want the brightest lights. The G3 is much more better than the original. If you have a Parmetheus (1st generation) or a Parmetheus Plus (2nd generation), the G3 is leaps and bounds better. 1st generation taxi light on the top, G3 on the bottom. -

It is slightly better but if you have the Pro, I'd keep that versus changing to the G3. If you have Parmetheus Plus taxi lights, the G3 taxi lights are a worthy upgrade. Here is the Pro landing light versus the G3 landing light. Different disbursement pattern and color to the diodes but they do a good job illuminating all the way to the end of the taxiway. The Pro is still a very good light. Pro is on top, G3 is on the bottom. -

You will have to make structural modifications to get that to fit. -
Landing Lights: Whelen LED vs Aeroled or others
OSUAV8TER replied to Greg Ellis's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If you have a PAR-46 size lamp the only product Whelen has with the G3 is the landing light version, which has a 12 degree spot light. For the PAR-36 size the G3 has a landing and taxi light version. The taxi light version has a 50 degree flood light. If you only have one light, the landing light is the way to go because you'll really want it when you are on final approach to light up the runway. -

@Greg EllisI looked at a 1965 M20C on Controller and it has a single lamp in the nose that is a PAR-46 size. You can email me a photo or you can do the measurement too when you are with the airplane. I have done every generation PAR-46 Whelen LED landing light on my Bonanza (Parmetheus Plus, Parmetheus Pro, now the G3) and the G3 is hands down the best light I have flown behind. There is a wow factor to it. -

Landing Lights: Whelen LED vs Aeroled or others
OSUAV8TER replied to Greg Ellis's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
@Greg Ellis thanks for the tag. As you know, I am a Whelen dealer so I stock and have in my inventory the G3 LED landing and taxi lights (PAR-36 and PAR-46 sizes). For the money, they can't be beat. AeroLED's flagship lamp, the Sunspot is more expensive and it does not perform as well (photo taken from a drone below). Both Whelen and AeroLED put a lot of power through their lamps so cooling is an important design consideration. Typically cooling occurs on the back side of the lamp with the heat sink. When you look at the size of the heat sink, there isn't much on the AeroLED so in a static environment, it powers down rather quickly as it heats up. The G3 does too but not to the extent of the AeroLED. As previously noted, that can shorten the life of the diodes. Getting airflow over them (while flying) helps cool them but it can be tough to accurately measure the effects that has on them, at least from what I have seen to this date (really no data). Another consideration besides measuring raw candela output is the lens and how does it perform for the pilot? I had Whelen go out and take photos from a drone hovering above the aircraft to get a good visual of how it looks like in a real environment and they speak for themselves. For $399 versus ~$700 for the PAR-46 size (assuming singular landing light on the nose of your C) it is better and can't be beat. Here is a link to my website. LED Replacement for Whelen Model #70303 Light
OSUAV8TER replied to StevenL757's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Yes, while I can't say definitively, I don't think they are going to melt based upon the technology. I used to have really high powered PAR-46 incandescent bulbs in the wings of my Bonanza that will melt the lenses if left on too long while not in flight. Even the most powerful LED lamps do not melt them now. On the T-6 Texan there is a limitation for running the landing light on the ground. I think it is like 6 seconds according to my warbird buddy. -
LED Replacement for Whelen Model #70303 Light
OSUAV8TER replied to StevenL757's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
From my own practical experience the heat that is generated from LED lamps usually is found on the back side of the lamp on the heat sink. Depending on the diode placement, circuitry, power, etc. dictates the amount heat. Not trying to knock them but AeroLED has awful thermal design characteristics. When an LED heats up too much it will start to dim. I took a laser thermometer to the back and it was getting over 200 degrees. Not much heat on the front end (of the AeroLED or others). You will be fine running this during ground ops. If I had these in my aircraft I would run these day and night and consider putting them on a pulse mode for VFR recognition. -
LED Replacement for Whelen Model #70303 Light
OSUAV8TER replied to StevenL757's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Okay all purchase orders with Whelen have been correct to account for 28V and 14V versions. Like 98% of the lamps are going to be 28V. If you have a 28V electrical system you need the 28V lamp (regardless of the resistor) and if you have a 14V version you need the 14V lamp. I intend to stock these when they come out but you can preorder them at the links below. Lights are shipped in the order they are received and I will start working on collecting the remaining balance due when I have an absolute clear delivery date from Whelen, which right now is mid February. LED Replacement for Whelen Model #70303 Light
OSUAV8TER replied to StevenL757's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
I have confirmed with Whelen that the 28V LED lights will work with the 28V electrical systems that have the resistor installed. So 14V electrical systems get the 14V version, 28V systems get the 28V versions. I will be sending out an email to collect that information to get the proper count. These will be getting manufactured soon. -
