Spin on oil filter busted at the seams
N231BN replied to woodman86's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have also found remote oil filters plumbed backwards. -
For the IAs out there. Who can do an inspection?
N231BN replied to N201MKTurbo's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I don't see any reason both IA's can't sign the log entry. If you are worried about signing for something the other guy did, keep the inspection checklist with initials for who performed each task. -
Can 2 sources be wired into G5 w/GAD29B?
N231BN replied to BloodRedSkies's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
It's not approved or even recommended but still possible with a relay. I'm not sure what it would really achieve, there is the same chance of having a G5/GAD29 failure as there is a GTN failure. Not to mention the single avionics buss or master switch/relay. I would rather have the GNS separate with the GI-106A in case the G5 goes down. IMHO, these airplanes aren't built with the redundancy of a Part-25 Jet so there isn't any reason to make the avionics more complicated than they need to be. -
Can 2 sources be wired into G5 w/GAD29B?
N231BN replied to BloodRedSkies's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
No worries, Section 2.1 "Installation Limitations." It is interesting that they don't mention this in either the navigator connection or autopilot connection sections. I believe it is a limitation on how much the GAD 29 can handle. -
Can 2 sources be wired into G5 w/GAD29B?
N231BN replied to BloodRedSkies's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Neat, 25-0083 here. The S-TEC 30 uses the HDG error output from the G5/GAD29 so you cannot enable a second navigator input, not enough DAC's in the box to do it all I guess. -

N231BN replied to BloodRedSkies's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Do you have an autopilot? The hangup with having two navigators connected to a GAD-29 is you can't utilize the autopilot outputs for a non-Garmin autopilot. This is just one area where the GI-275 shines over the G5. -

M20C flight control rigging travel boards in PHX?
N231BN replied to EricShr's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The first thing to check is to make sure the instrument panel is level and not sagging on loose shock mounts. The ball will only be accurate if the panel is level. As others have said, you can't pick up a heavy wing with aileron rigging, many have tried and it always results in a crooked yoke. -
ยง 65.81 General privileges and limitations. (a) A certificated mechanic may perform or supervise the maintenance, preventive maintenance or alteration of an aircraft or appliance, or a part thereof, for which he is rated (but excluding major repairs to, and major alterations of, propellers, and any repair to, or alteration of, instruments), and may perform additional duties in accordance with ยงยง 65.85, 65.87, and 65.95. If he has not so performed that work at an earlier date, he may show his ability to do it by performing it to the satisfaction of the Administrator or under the direct supervision of a certificated and appropriately rated mechanic, or a certificated repairman, who has had previous experience in the specific operation concerned. b. A certificated mechanic may not exercise the privileges of his certificate and rating unless he understands the current instructions of the manufacturer, and the maintenance manuals, for the specific operation concerned.

The GI-275 Manual requires the CDI key to be disabled. This also disables the autoswitch button on the GTN setup page. Perhaps sometime in the future they will put the autoswitch capability in the GI-275. I really don't see it as that big of a deal, you need to manually switch AP modes anyway.

Intermittent delayed gear retraction
N231BN replied to blue eagle's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Yes, but that is not your problem. Check the relay or the gear motor itself. -
Service Instruction M20-58 contained instructions to add pressurization to earlier models. My 1979 has a -GB and pressurized Bendix mags.

Are pilots going to be replaced by AI?
N231BN replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I think the bigger question here is when will AI replace the passengers? -
You most likely have a S6LSC-25P which is pressurized. A Slick 6324 is also eligible for installation, it too is pressurized.

Can KX-155 drive both a KI-206 and a GI-275?
N231BN replied to Flash's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
He needs to make sure the GI-275 autopilot settings match the type of HSI that was previously connected to the STEC(NSD 360, KI-525, etc.). I'm still working on the NAV2 issue. -
Can KX-155 drive both a KI-206 and a GI-275?
N231BN replied to Flash's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I got a quick test flight in this morning to test the GI-275's, they make that 44 year-old Century III fly like new. The VOR 2 indication did wander a little on the GI-275, it was steady on the KI-204. Next time I'll un-plug the KI-204 and see if it makes a difference. -
The gear system as a whole can be a long-term liability. If it has a Dukes gear actuator it's not as bad but can still suffer from cracked gear struts as mentioned above. Make sure it is well looked at during annual and make no hard turns on the ground.

Can KX-155 drive both a KI-206 and a GI-275?
N231BN replied to Flash's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
That is interesting, I have a similar setup but with a KI-204. I haven't had a chance to test it yet but if it doesn't work I'll probably ditch the KI-204. -
That's a nice looking KNS 80, I would keep it over the 170B.

Can KX-155 drive both a KI-206 and a GI-275?
N231BN replied to Flash's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The GI-275 does all of that internally, you are really only adding another point of failure. And as you said, it is not an approved configuration per the GI-275 IM. -
Can KX-155 drive both a KI-206 and a GI-275?
N231BN replied to Flash's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Yes, the 275 sends the deviations to the autopilot. There really isn't a reason to leave the KI-209 except it's already there. -
Can KX-155 drive both a KI-206 and a GI-275?
N231BN replied to Flash's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The GI-275 and the KI-209 have their own VOR converters so they can each give you a different indication. The 275 will clearly say NAV2 and like you said have a hollow arrow. -
Can KX-155 drive both a KI-206 and a GI-275?
N231BN replied to Flash's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Are you certain you have a KI-206? They are normally used with a KX-165. The KI-204 or KI-209 has the VOR/LOC converter for use with a KX-155. The GI-275 takes the VOR composite signal from the KX-155/165 and can be combined with a mechanical CDI. -
Confusion with my KFC-150, G5 HSI, GI-275 and a 530W
N231BN replied to skyfarer's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The G5 installation manual can be downloaded from the Garmin website: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?partNumber=K10-00280-01&tab=manuals You do see a few airplanes configured this way with the GI-275 providing attitude and the G5 sending heading and course info but the install diagrams for the GI-275 don't show that, it's all or nothing. The GI-275 is such an amazing instrument for what it is, when a legacy autopilot is involved it's in an entirely different class than a G5. It is possible they requested and received a field approval for the installation of both a G5 and GI-275 connected to the autopilot. -
Confusion with my KFC-150, G5 HSI, GI-275 and a 530W
N231BN replied to skyfarer's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Not to be harsh, but your airplane is not airworthy with those instruments installed and no AFMS. Furthermore, if the GI-275 is providing attitude to your autopilot, it must be installed in the primary location. My recommendation would be either sell the G5 HSI, move the G5 ADI to the TC position, and add a base GI-275 as HSI; or sell both G5s and get a GI-275 ADAHRS with backup battery as an HSI/MFD Standby.
