  1. Speaking about owners of an older airplane doing a field overhaul as opposed to a factory reman....I have posted here and asked you guys for your criteria for determing when an engine needs to be "put out to pasture." Consensus seems to be an abundance of metal in the oil, low compression, cracked case, high oil consumption, etc. My question here is, let's say that compression is good in 3 out of 4, oil consumption is low, what is the consensus on replacing only the effected jug and continuing on and replacing other cylinders as they individually loose compression or other symptoms develop?
  2. Thanks. That's pretty specific and and easy criteria to keep track of. You said a filter full of metal is one. I've always had the oil filters cut in half and sent to the lab, but I was looking at Blackstone's website earlier and they say aspirate an oil sample from the dipstick and send it in. This doesn't seem nearly as good as sending in half of the oil filter. Do you know if I could take their sample from the oil that is in the oil filter and accomplish the same thing as sending the filter itself to them?
  3. What criteria will you use to know when your engine has told you "it is time to goout to pasture?"
  4. Anyone have some good quality used headsets for sale at a reasonable price?
  5. Thanks for sharing that point of view Jim.
  6. Yes, I purchased it as a runnout, BUT, hope springs eternal, eh? Thanks for sharing how you plan on handling yours. You mentioned, "possibly" even "refreshing" the cylinders at TBO. What would be your criteria to determine if you would actually do them. And, would you replace the entire jug or what? i.e. what do you mean by "refreshing" the cylinders. And, would you buy the jugs out right, complete with pistons, rods, rings, bearings and have your mx install them or what exactly? Thanks for taking time to answer.
  7. I just purchased a M20B from Bill Vose who told me that he has owned over 35 airplanes and routinely buys and sells them. When i Googled him, I was impressed by the comments people had made about him. i.e. "arrogant but blatantly honest." Based on those comments on Google, I purchased the aircraft sight unseen and based on a lot of faith in his verbal assurances that I "would not be disappointed in the airplane." Previously I have purchased numerous airplanes including a 172RG, a couple of 310's, Cherokee, Duke, Citation 1SP, etc. I never saw even one of them before I purchased them. And, I was never stung. But, each time, i get a little nervous just before delivery. So, back to my initial question, have any of you ever done business with Bill Vose?
  8. Thanks for the feedback Guys. But, I'm interested in an average time (how many hours) the engine can be expected to go before major overhaul is necessary.
  9. I would like to buy this airplane. Anyone know how I can contact the seller?
  10. OK Guys, here's a related question. I just purchased a M20B that has 1600 SMOH. Assuming that the engine has been well maintained and has no gross defects, what can I expect as far as the total engine hours (more than 2000) before overhaul is necessary. And, other than low compression or excessive oil consumption or bearing noise or lack of power, what criteria should i use to know when the engine needs to be overhauled?
  11. Barnstormers and TAP
  12. I am interested in buying this airplane if its still available. Does anyone know the seller's contact info?
  13. thanks again. I hadn't seen this when i sent you the last pm asking for it.
  14. I emailed him my tele number and he called me.
  15. That's the conclusion I came to also.
  16. Does anyone have a copy of a 1961 M20B Owner Operating Handbook and Service Manual they could pm me? Thanks
  17. Thanks for the info. It had everything I needed.
  18. I spoke with this person about this aircraft and one thing after another raised its ugly head. First, it is advertised as a M20C, Super 21--of which there is no such thing. Second, the contact telephone number was disconnected so I had to contact him by email. Third, he said he was not a pilot and inherited the airplane from his father. His African accent didn't match his last name. Forth, he said I could not get the aircraft inspected because a prior USA buyer had backed out and the aircraft had already been prepared for shipment. What kind of shipment negated the option of an innspection i asked. He said the USA buyer had arranged to have the aircraft shipped to him by uship and that the aircraft was already IN BOXES!!!!!! At that point, I hung up. Beware of this seller.
  19. What is the website where i can go to find out the complete damage history of an aircraft from its manufacturing date in 1961?
  20. Scott Utz's Arapahoe Aero at KAPA (Centennial Airport on the South Side of Denver) is a Mooney Authorized Service Center. I have known and used Scott for many years. He's a bit on the pricey side, but is good and honest and straight forward.
  21. Is this acft still for sale? If so, how many hours have you flown it in the last year? Thanks,
