I thought 85 was best glide with flaps and gear up. I was expecting a lower number in landing configuration (70 to 75?).

"I prefer to stay on the front side or the bottom until just over the fence" what is the bottom of the power curve speed at gross weight in your Ovation? I have been using Don Kaye's video and hand out and use the numbers per his sheets and it works perfectly every time. I always assumed that the bottom of the power curve is close to short field approach speed (70 kts at gross with power). Is that correct?

Don Maxwell recommends not switching the batteries with engine running. If my memory serves me right, it was due to relay issues causing a voltage spike as carusoam mentioned above.

Call or E-mail Dave Mollman at Precise Flight (541-585-2421,dave.mollman@preciseflight.com). He is the top speed-brake expert there and very helpful. usually, this is a simple micro switch adjustment on the electric ones but if it is slow to deploy, it may need more TLC.

Fuel drip from cockpit ceiling vent
M20S Driver replied to DaveAnderson's topic in General Mooney Talk
Since I am known to be paranoid, i would look for fuel leak all over and investigate the engine fuel drain lines. How full were the tanks? Did you notice abnormal fuel consumption or flow? -
Lost my nose gear cover plate; where can i buy it?
M20S Driver replied to THill182's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
My mechanic insists that I get rid of all those wheel covers and check the air pressure more frequently... He has seen a few damaged landing gears where the covers partially came off and jammed the gear in the gear well. Anyone has any thoughts on this suggestion? -
The complete 3rd Class Medical Reform law text.
M20S Driver replied to cnoe's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I was looking for the same info. My understanding is that if you have or had a valid special issuance in the past 10 years, you qualify. if it was revoked, then it does not qualify you. This was covered in AOPA's QA section. -
Tips on Landing a Mooney Bravo?
M20S Driver replied to Skywarrior's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
well said Dave. I land in a 2440 feet runway and follow the above advice. I also chop the power about 50 feet above the runway for short field approach. Don Kaye's Landing DVD is highly recommended here. -
Thanks for the follow up. I have the 100 series and the set up is basically the same. I also learned from Precise Flight that the up setting has to have 1/4 of an inch of overlap between the two plates. Driver

Screaming Eagle Upgrade (310 HP with Scimitar Prop)
M20S Driver replied to GeorgePerry's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
My 310 upgrade was worth every penny and was just from 280HP to 310HP. Looks like you fixed the sagging prop problem. I know this because your plane looks identical to mine and your plane's in flight pics are my desk top How did you correct it? Driver -
My Taxi Light stopped working and seems to have a marginal contact in the Positronic connector in the circuit breaker box. I found the attached service bulletin describing the issue. Has anyone installed this kit on their planes and was was the failure mode? I measure 24 volts at the Taxi light switch and it drops to .1 volts as soon as the switch is turned on. Did the procedure work? Do you mind sharing the procedure?

The one on my plane has a micro switch that is adjustable. It is a very simple mechanism so once it is removed, you can see the sensors and the rotary adjustment with set screws. My switches activate within 5-10 deg inside of full extension or full retraction.

No back spring in landing gear actuators
M20S Driver replied to M20S Driver's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Assuming that the gear up had minimal repairable airframe damage, I would be comfortable with with a new engine, Prop, and engine mount to have a piece of mind. Keep in mind that this is my personal opinion and you are not the only one disagreeing with this My opinion would have had some flexibility if I flew in the flat lands. I regularly fly over the Sierras and can not take any chances. -
Cirrus down in Houston - fatalities.
M20S Driver replied to cnoe's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Can someone familiar with the airport educate me on why she was cleared to land on rwy35 with winds out of East 13 gusting to 18? Why not runway 4 or 12? -
Starter Problems Ovation 3 w/IO-550-G
M20S Driver replied to neil's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I would try a different oil if it is not too late. Mike Busch thinks that the Paraffin in the oil can cause this. I will be switching to Phillips 20-50 with the next oil change. -
Starter Problems Ovation 3 w/IO-550-G
M20S Driver replied to neil's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I read that the synthetic blend Aero-shell 15/50 may cause or expedite this failure mode. That's the oil that I have been using so far but no issues. What kind of oil do you use? -
No back spring in landing gear actuators
M20S Driver replied to M20S Driver's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
There are too many variables in the repair of the gear up damage to make it as good as new. Don Maxwell is great but he is over a 1000 miles away from me and the whole repair process is very time consuming. -
No back spring in landing gear actuators
M20S Driver replied to M20S Driver's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Yes. I had the same discussion with Mark and Tom and decided to replace it and I am glad I did. I will not fly an airplane with damage history such as a gear up landing (OK, this is my personal choice and I have heard long arguments about it) so it is a small fee to pay to have a better chance of not having a no back spring failure and looking for another plane. -
No back spring in landing gear actuators
M20S Driver replied to M20S Driver's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Top Gun originally (2013) was waiting for Mooney to increase the time to 2000 hours. They are now recommending to replace it at 1000 hours. Perhaps the chattering is the best near failure indicator for a seasoned pilot but not everyone knows or understands it. -
No back spring in landing gear actuators
M20S Driver replied to M20S Driver's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I used to drop the gear at 130 kts range (max is 140 per POH) to slow down and get a nice rate of decent. My mechanic ( top notch mechanic and professional turbine pilot) thinks that it is too fast and the gear should be lowered around 110 kts. In his opinion, higher speed puts too much load on the motor and no-back- spring. What speed should be used as a normal target to lower the gear in a long body and at what speed do you normally do it? Just a Driver -
What is your fuel flow at full power? I climb at 125-135 kts and had no issues. Your fuel set up needs to be on the high side of the limit on the high pressure side and low side of the limit on the low pressure (idle?) side. This will give max fuel flow at max power since you will open the mixture setting to compensate for the low pressure side of the fuel pump setting. I am not a mechanic but I read the blogs on Mooneyspace.

"And does WOTFR 2700 yield cool CHTs?"--- YES. I upgraded to 310 HP last year. I used to struggle to keep it below 380 deg f during full power T.O.s in the summer but now it is a non-issue. My EGT during my sea level WOTFR take off today was very near top of the blue line and around 1440 Deg F (Moony EGT not JPI). Fuel flow was at 27.9 GPH.

Full power T.O. Stock EGT is 1460 to 1480. The top of the blue zone is at 1430. I have never peaked the EGT at full power at sea level. Cruise climb is 2700 rpm and 24 inches and I get 1430 at 1000 msl. 75% power cruise at 7000 feet gives me peak EGT of 1560.
