sounds like the return valve isn't completely closed, the cable to the valve could have come loose and not closing , or there could be leakage bypassing the valve. my bet is the cable! Brian

Exhaust leaks on new Powerflow install?
orionflt replied to DXB's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
there has been plenty of people in the area that have been asking me the same thing, and I have been talking about getting insurance and starting to do annuals for everyone in the area. In fact I was working on having a full time shop up and running by the end of the year. BUT...... NASA offered me a job and I had to take it. I am not working directly for NASA, but a contractor that maintains and fly the NASA aircraft out of Wallops Island VA. I am working on and flying as an engineer on the P-3 aircraft that NASA owns. they also have a C-130, King air 200 and several other planes. I will start a thread later giving a little more detail. Exhaust leaks on new Powerflow install?
orionflt replied to DXB's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I would suspect they went with the cheaper gaskets and did not use the correct amount or seat them correctly. Looks like the EGT probes are installed a little high on the pipes, they should be down about 2 inches. if they are up higher they tend to burn up quicker. Brian -

that is the correct FF according to the Lycoming O-360 operators manual, But 18 seems to be the best to keep the engine running cool. Brian -

High CHT, 470 degrees +.

My temps were in the 400-450 range when I first bought my plane, the only thing I really did to make a difference was to rebuild the doghouse and tighten up my baffles. there are some major holes in the back of the engine that you really don't notice unless you go looking. I blocked off and filled gaps that went from barely noticeable to close to 1/2 inch. my first pass thru the engine dropped the temps around 50 degrees, but I had missed a major gap behind the oil pressure regulator. I also added sealant to areas that were tight, just not sealed. the last thing I did was to use metal tape on the seams of the doghouse. the tape doesn't make much of a difference because i rebuilt the doghouse, but I have seen it help other planes whose doghouse needed some TLC. I am not sure what Carb I have installed and my logbooks are currently in PA but I will try to get the info posted as soon as I can. the one thing i do know is it was last overhauled in 2002 and been rock solid. I was just looking at the FF charts and you are at least 1.5 lean. my 18 is a little on the high side but as you can see with my temps during takeoff it is keeping everything cool. Brian -

@ragedracer1977, I flew again today but when I took off I kept my cowl flaps closed. the OAT was 70 degrees and my max CHT was 360, FF during takeoff was 18.2 Where is your FF at? (I may have missed it if you previously said.) Brian -

here is my flight, I was incorrect, I hit 350 on #3 during climb out, but 20 degrees isn't a big deal in that range. -

Just brought my plane down to Virginia today. Took a few picks of my temps in cruise. didn’t get any pics during climb out because it was too bumpy, but my max CHT was around 330 on # 3. Oat was around 50 on the ground and 32 at 4500 ft. Had everything pulled back to keep out of the yellow because of the constant chop. the first pic was just after TOC. The second was about 20 min into the flight. -

if they are missing, then that is your problem. i was wondering the same thing. your oil temp range should be 100-225 deg F with a redline of 245, 190 is not a bad temp but the vernitherm should be trying to regulate 180 deg F. With your CHT's running where they are it makes sense that your oil temps are going to run hotter. one other thing to look at is your cowl flap to ensure they are properly adjusted. as you probably already know the upper part of the engine compartment is a high pressure area, the lower section is low pressure. the cowl flaps should be open aprox 1" when closed to give the proper air flow out of the lower cowling. if it is closed up too much or you have ram air coming into the lower cowl the pressure is increased affecting the airflow and ultimately the engine cooling. Brice, first thing I see from this is the 191 on the oil temp, is that only in climb or do you get that in cruise also? Yes I know its not that high in the scheme of things, but in this case we are looking for the small things to figure out what is going on. since yours is a 63' you should still have the doghouse, what are your cruise CHT's? the ones you have posted tell me your doghouse is not as tight as you think and there is a lot of air bypassing. when I redid mine a few years ago my CHTs were around where yours are, my hot cylinder was number 3. now I worry that my cylinders are actually running too cold in the winter. my climb temps may hit 380, my cruise temps are in the high 200, low 300. there are a lot of little places for the air to bypass reducing the cooling. also look over #4 cylinder to ensure the cooling fins are not being blocked. an old birds or mouse nest that has filled some of the cooling fins will really mess up the cooling on that cylinder. if you have the doghouse off, take pictures from the top looking down and post them, we may be able to see something from them. I am assuming you changed the probe when you upgraded the engine monitor. are your cowl flaps open? what was your oil temp? how did the EGT compare to the other cylinders? where is your oil cooler located? Lower cowling, or relocated behind #4 cylinder? Brian -
How to Join NJMP (NJ Mooney Pilots) for NorthEasterners
orionflt replied to 201er's topic in General Mooney Talk
for this year if we do something it will be at Quakertown, but it is right at the time we will have to move from the temp housing we are currently in. in the future we will either be in salisbury MD or Accomack VA. MD had open hangars right now but the big deciding factor will be where we end up living. currently both airports are about an hour drive from where we are. I have gotten very spoiled living 5 minutes from the airport. -

I'm not sure if we will have anything anytime soon, in fact Pankey and I are still trying to figure out if we are going to do the annual Memorial Day weekend get together. Brian
