Rwsavory Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 A local avionics shop did some work on our panel and also moved the pilot side PTT switch from the right side of the yoke to the left. In doing this work, the trim switch (STEC) was removed and replaced. Four flights after the work, the right split on the trim switch jammed, and the trim breaker tripped. We then noticed for the first time that one of the mounting screws for the switch was missing. Took the switch off and found the missing screw jammed against one of the micro-switches. The trim switch now works, but the right split does not move as crisply as before. Lessons learned: Closely inspect after any maintenance. Look for new avionics shop. Quote
PTK Posted February 23, 2013 Report Posted February 23, 2013 That split trim switch is a very expensive item. I priced one a couple years ago and it was around 700$. It is also a delicate spring mechanism which may now be damaged. You may want to press that shop to replace it for you. Just goes to show you how irresponsible and careless some can be. Quote
Rwsavory Posted February 23, 2013 Author Report Posted February 23, 2013 I can feel that the spring is damaged. However, it still functions, thankfully. There is a new direct replacement for the switch waiting for FAA approval. It is about $280. The avionics guy is slow as Christmas, so I think we'll just move on. Quote

Maybe it has been approved... http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/trimSwitches.php?clickkey=5126 OR they better update their website! It's almost March! I just replaced my trim switch do to my old one going belly up - for my KFC200. ~$2500 is the current price but after much searching I found a new but old stock unit for $800. And I was happy to buy it. $279 is getting close to more reasonable for a tiny switch unit. Quote
