I ordered my key from a msc and it took a couple of weeks. I also talked to medeco and this is the route you have to take

according to what I was told.

I talked to Medeco re: buying new keys. They said I didn't own the registration number on the keys to my 2004 Ovation2--Mooney does. I called Mooney support and left a message hoping that there was some long-winded bureaucratic form-intensive method to obtain ownership, or official authority, to purchase a duplicate key for my plane. My only comfort after no return call: any potential thief will have to hot-wire it, and just like us, nail the numbers on short final. Downside: I haven't figured out how to hot wire it if necessary...yet.

You don't "Hot wire" an airplane, just the opposite. Mags are always "hot" they get grounded by the ignition switch when in the off position. If you unplug the wire between the switch and the mag it allows the mag to fire. Mags generate the current they use. They do not get an ignition signal. This is one of the reasons you do a "mag check" A mag check verifies that YOU can turn OFF the spark. This is why turning the prop on a turned off airplane can be dangerous. If the Ground wire from the mag to the switch was broken it will spark if the prop is turned. Most lawnmowers operate in this same way. My generator also works this way. The off switch simply grounds the wire coming to it.
