201AV8 Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 Anyone with experience that you are willing to share with Prop Works, Inc., in Florida. I may need a governor overhaul in the near future and a prop overhaul after that for my M20J and I am looking for support options on the East coasts. http://propworksinc.com/ thanks in advance Quote
bnicolette Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 I don't have any input on that shop but I just had my governor done. I was quoted $475 for the overhaul but when it went in for the overhaul they found that a SB had not been complied with and the part to comply with it was $530. My total bill was over $1300! Ouch. Just be ready to dish out some big bucks possibly. I think I would have been better off just buying an overhauled unit and sending mine in for a core possibly? Quote
201AV8 Posted November 23, 2012 Author Report Posted November 23, 2012 Thanks, this has been an expensive maintenance year and I am steeling myself for the governor repair. What shop did you use? Where? Quote
N601RX Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 It might be worth considering a New PCU 5000 governor instead of overhauling the old governor. You can buy a new one outright for around $1700 and sell your old one as a core on ebay for a few hundred. They are generally regarded as a better governor , a couple of pounds lighter and have a 7 year warrenty. I think they include a new cable arm bracket also. Quote
bnicolette Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 I used H & H Propeller out of Burlington, NC. I have no complaints with them and the unit came back looking brand new! It was just more expensive than I was prepared for. I suppose I didn't have to comply with the SB but there is a SB for a reason and couldn't justify not doing it when thinking about safety and reliability. There was nothing wrong with mine either and was working perfectly 12 years after the last overhaul. I had oil contamination though so the mechanic wanted to send it in to get it flushed. The only kicker is that McCauley won't allow just a flush with oil contamination so we had to have it overhauled. All those little parts add up fast though. Wish you the best on yours!! B~ Quote
Cruiser Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 I just had my prop checked for tracking, angle and balance at H&S prop shop. They were quick, efficient and professional. http://www.hspropeller.com/ Quote
jetdriven Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 We used Quality Aircraft Accesssories in Tulsa for our governor. We needed a different model number with the new engine and it would cost $1300 or so to convert it, perhaps more if parts were not serviceable. However, we were able to send ours as a core and exchange it for the correct model for about 1200$. They do them in-house and they sent it asembled with the correct Mooney governor arm bracket we had sent to them. A straight overhaul was around 695$ plus new parts, as Brett found out, gets expensive. Quote
podair Posted November 23, 2012 Report Posted November 23, 2012 out of curiosity , may I ask how much a prop overhaul is in the US? My 3 blade Hartzell is due next year, and cheapest oh is around $3500. I don't think it would make much sense to ship it to the US but just curious how costs compare , as in Europe you tend to think US price +50% unfortunately.... Quote
201AV8 Posted November 24, 2012 Author Report Posted November 24, 2012 Thanks all for the great feedback, "...just more expensive than I was prepared for", as Bnicolette says, seems to be the norm for the governor. While more costly up front, going the PCU 5000 route and recouping some of the cost by selling the core as N601RX may be the least expensive long term. Quote
