cruiserflyer Posted November 4 Report Posted November 4 My recently bought Mooney does not have an oil filter, just wondering what the group's experience with what is a reputable and quality oil filter adapter manufacturer? I am not quite sure what the spacer size is. Where do I start with looking for this part?
ProtoFly Posted November 4 Report Posted November 4 For my 1970 F, I installed the Airwolf Remote Filter. I'm very happy with it. Mounted on the pilot-side firewall, about where the brake fluid reservoir is. I'll see about finding pics of my install. You'll need to have a couple of oil lines made. Shadrach Posted November 4 Report Posted November 4 I guess it depends on whether you want a remote or accessory case mounted filter. I have the Donaldson adapter. Donaldson Spin On Oil Filter Adapter - 204418-156 | Aircraft Spruce ® Pros: Does not further clutter the firewall. Should not need new hoses. Inexpensive Cons: Challenging to change the filter with no spills. Further clutters an already tight area of the engine. 1

Did you require a spacer, or does that fit out of the box? I realize it's and extremely tight fit, and I'm OK with the "cons" because it's already a nightmare back there. Also assume the superior gasket under "Frequently Purchased with" is the one you bought as well?
ProtoFly Posted November 5 Report Posted November 5 I decided on the Airwolf remote filter because it makes oil changes 'easy', and clean. Oil from the filter is easy to catch, and isn't dripping on a bunch of things that are difficult to get to. I did look at the Donaldson adapter, and decided the hassle of the tight space just wasn't worth it. Additionally, I'd have also had to modify the prop governor bracket, which would not clear a standard oil filter. 1

It's right there and not sure what I'd have to do to make the oil filter fit. Thanks for the reminder. 1

The ‘70 F model IPC shows a cutout in the prop cable support bracket that should eliminate interference with an oil filter mounted on the accessory case. Not accounting for subsequent changes to the configuration, obviously. 2 hours ago, cruiserflyer said: The prop governor bracket, to me, is the big barrier that I'll have to think about. Looking at the IPC for your year/serial number, I think the ‘67 F model has the prop cable penetrate the firewall on the right side, so the cable support bracket shouldn’t interfere with an oil filter on the accessory case (if that’s what you meant, and not the remote filter…). 1

Yes, the prop governor is on the right side, I had this impression, without remembering clearly, that the oil pump housing was also on the right side, but I guess it is not if you're looking at the drawings.
N201MKTurbo Posted November 6 Report Posted November 6 My old M20F had a screen. I just found a used oil filter adapter on EBay. It was a Lycoming part. It fit perfect and worked fine. You will find it in the engine parts manual, not the Mooney IPC.
N201MKTurbo Posted November 6 Report Posted November 6 It is Lycoming 77852. Same as the Donaldson. 1

Unfortunately, the bracket would not clear a standard oil filter in my case. The 'curve' would have to be deepened or cut away significantly. Just not worth the hassle. 1
