kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Greetings, Just got myself 1962 Money 20C and I don't know much of this bird yet. What I know is that only the left seat is equipped with brakes and there is nothing for co-pilot. Because of that, our local CFI's refuse to provide instructions to my wife who only had 11 hours on C172 before. I was told that there is a co-pilot brake kit that can be installed on the right side, but I could not find this kit or any info pertaining to the installation of co-pilot brakes. f anyone can point me into the right direction or even sell the necessary part(s) I will be forever in your debt. thank you Yuri Quote
Cris Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 As an alternative why not find a CFI that will work with you at a large airport with an extended runway? After all the plane does have rudder pedals for steering on the ground and you can always go around. One does not need brakes for the air work. I'd have no issue instructing with a long runway say 5000' or so without brakes after sufficient air work. Quote
kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 well, our runway is longer that 5000 and yet all these guys refused to instruct. They keep saying that I need to retrofit the bird with brakes on the right side and my options are limited to a couple of airports Quote

Becca Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 I suspect renting a 152 or 172 for 10-20 hrs for your wife and an instructor that will be willing to transition to a non-dual brake Mooney with her after she gets a little more experience (perhaps solos) in a dual brake plane might be cheaper than any conversion options that may exist. Also, in my experience, a good instructor personality fit is vital in terms of successful training. You'll do better by your wife finding her an instructor she meshes well with and paying for aircraft rental than finding her the only instructor in town willing to instruct without dual brakes. I know, my two cents here, all you were doing was asking for parts... At least I avoided passing judgment about the quality of a Mooney as a primary trainer.. Quote
kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 Well, renting C172 with CFI in our school will run me $1700 for another 10 hrs. The kit, according to A/P guy at the school, is about $1000. Trouble is he doesn't know where to get it and his only suggestion is to look at the places that sell Mooney parts which I tried already, with no success whatsoever. Quote
gregwatts Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Try Lasar.com.......but I would suggest letting your wife finish her PPL in a school plane. One hiccup in a Mooney could be very ugly.....I don't recommend using your mooney for flight lessons. My opinion only! Quote

kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 Greg, thank you for great suggestion. Yes, Lasar.com has the part, at least it is in their catalog. I will call them tomorrow ! THANKS !!! Quote
kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 Becca, $170/hr is a total charge, plane and CFI and taxes. PDK charges are actually much higher Quote

kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 152 is not, I don't want my wife to sit on CFI's lap. ) I had about 12 hrs on 152 and ran away to 172, this little thing qualifies for an airplane only when there is only one person in the cockpit, otherwise it looks more like a romantic encounter Quote

Taracka Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 If the brake mod is like the one on my M20C it uses a shuttle valve between the left and right occupants brakes. The problem with this setup is if the student should step on the brakes first the instructor cannot override it and is still along for the ride. Quote

kris_adams Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Hey Yuri, Welcome to MooneySpace. I'm based out of LZU. Maybe I'll run into you some day. Are you at LZU too? I see you're from Duluth. Kris Quote
Kwixdraw Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 You might want to check your insurance too. It may well be that she's not covered to train or the cost may be more than the rental. We've had some long discussions about initial training in Mooneys. Not a pretty picture if you get a landing wrong and fold a nose gear of have a prop strike. Could well total an older aircraft. kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 Yes, I am in LZU. Just got my 20C delivered to me, tied it down at flight school. Need to get 25 hrs duo with CFI before I can fly solo, per insurance clause since all my experience is with Cessna's. Not a big issue, but our CFI's don't want to instruct my wife because of that brake situation. Funny thing, we bought Mooney only because my wife started taking lessons and we wanted a fast plane since we are planning long haul trips and now this.. I might have made a mistake buying this beautiful bird too soon, but couldn't resist the temptation Quote
kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 Well, the insurance is about $1550 for both me and my wife and the qoute is on my desk. It is painful, but not lethal... however, I might have run into the dead end road with these dual brakes so in the end my wife may need to continue flying Cessna until CFI's are happy to let her control Mooney. Quote
kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 The insurance quote is qbout $1500 for both of us. Painful but not lethal. However, it looks more and more like impossible mission and I may eed to get a quote just for myself and let my wife continue on 172 until our CFI's are confident enough to let her fly Mooney with single side brakes Quote

Skywarrior Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Yuri - Talk to Evanthe at Skybound Aviation at PDK. She may be a very good CFI for your wife. Quote
kommers Posted July 6, 2012 Author Report Posted July 6, 2012 Evanthe Papastathis? I will try, thank you. Quote
