Tmack201 Posted July 25, 2025 Report Posted July 25, 2025 Just bought a an oxygen bottle (2 place). What are your suggestions about what to do with the bottle, with O2 in it, when parked for a few days on a ramp with hot temps? Take it with you to the hotel, or leave it in the airplane? Wondering about potential explosion!
IvanP Posted July 25, 2025 Report Posted July 25, 2025 The tanks are rated to withstand temps that you can encounter on ramp without exceeding their max pressure. Just as we do not remove the built-in tanks, there is no need to remove portable tank from the plane except for filling or if you do not plan on using it.
MikeOH Posted July 25, 2025 Report Posted July 25, 2025 I believe O2 tanks have a rated BURST pressure above 6000 psi. Normal fill is not over 2000 psi. Pressure is proportional to temperature (on absolute scale). So, if pressure at 80 F (300 K) is 2000 psi, then to get to 6000 psi would require a temp of 900K; which is a bit over 1100 F! Even a Phoenix ramp in summer is going to fall a bit short of that! I think you're pretty safe not to worry about it 2

Tmack201 Posted July 26, 2025 Author Report Posted July 26, 2025 Appreciate all your input! Thank you!
Pinecone Posted July 29, 2025 Report Posted July 29, 2025 Also they normally have a overpressure relief. So if the pressure did get too high, it would just vent all the gas. Another data point, my O2 cylinder is permanently mounted in the tail cone. It requires a flexible skinny mechanic to remove.
