I wasn't familiar with SkyCharts but I'll give it a look. Also, I have been following WingX for some time and downloaded that to give it a try, but to even experiment with the moving map functionality you had to pay the $99 app fee which I thought was a bit of a rip-off so I didn't do it.

Agree with the posts on Aeroweather, Skycharts, Pilot WIZ, IO360 and AOPA directory.  Very useful apps.  Some others to consider:

  • Radar Canada and Canada Radar - latter will show your GPS position
  • Instrument suite from IAWARE - Useful in a loss of airspeed, attitude, altitude or gyro instruments?
  • Air Navigation PRO - good VOR, HSI and ADF from Xample
  • Decibel - How noisy is your plane?
  • iVibrometer - keep tabs on vibration readings, may give you a warning if something is wearing out in your engine.

It is legal to use your iphone in the airplane in Canada, so a lot of useful applications for flying are available.  Some of these would be great on an iPad.  Check out http://aviatorapps.com/ for a whole lot of other apps.
