redbaron1982 Posted October 4 Report Posted October 4 Hi, I couple of months ago I did some cosmetic maintenance on my front landing gear doors and replaced the anti-chafing tape (one that was white and looked made of a material similar to fiber glass) with a black 3M tape that is supposed to be the correct one, but after the last flight I notice that it was kind of "burnt", as when you expose a tape to high temp and it shrinks/wrinkles. I'm quite sure that this was to not handling the friction between the parts well. Which is the best anti-chafing tape I could use? I'd like to find out what is the brand of the white one I used to have. Quote
StevenL757 Posted October 4 Report Posted October 4 Your best option is 1/16" rubber sheeting material held in place by 3M 1300L Super Weather Stripping Adhesive (NOT the General-Purpose stuff). You want 3/4" wide strips to be cut evenly and then shaped with an XActo or other blade to the contour of the gear doors. I can send you some of the material sufficient to do the job if you want...PM me for details if interested Just pay me for shipping. I have excess. Steve 1 Quote
0TreeLemur Posted October 4 Report Posted October 4 3M makes a white/clear HD PTFE tape designed for this. It's expensive . Scotch makes an "equivalent " product that is considerably cheaper. I bought the Scotch brand and it's holding up well. 1 1 Quote
hammdo Posted October 4 Report Posted October 4 I’ve used this with great success - very tough — used it also on the tail for trim area… https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y6PHWY6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -Don 1 Quote

I tried to find it and I couldn't. Quote

Looking at the prices on Amazon, the 3M stuff is ridiculous. I got this Scotch brand stuff for 80% less. I don't suppose you'd need more than a few short pieces. If so, PM me how many strips you need, how long, plus your address and I'll mail it to you free. 1 Quote
redbaron1982 Posted October 5 Author Report Posted October 5 Thanks all for all the info and especially to @0TreeLemur and @StevenL757 for kindly offering to ship some tapes for free! I will get some UHMW generic tape and see how it goes. Owning a Mooney is not just owning the best GA airplane (at least the best value you can get!), but also being part of the best GA community! 1 Quote
PT20J Posted October 5 Report Posted October 5 I have had really good luck with putting 1/2" wide TapeCase 200A silicone foam tape on the doors and putting TapeCase 1" wide 423-3 UHMW tape on the belly. Both are available from Amazon. Both have really good adhesive but can be easily removed. 1 Quote
