sw1024 Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 In the midst of what is turning out to be a very expensive annual and being challenged with sourcing parts. Latest need is a spinner bulkhead/fillet that is broken at the weak point. S/N 680031-029. I know this is a hard to find part--I've been calling MSCs and salvage places with no success. Mooney has none in stock and I don't know that they will ever support it again. Pics attached for reference--any ideas on where I might find one? Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 I would just make one. Looks like about an hour's work and $10 worth of parts. Unless you harvest the nut plates, then it's about $1 worth of parts. 1 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted April 18, 2023 Report Posted April 18, 2023 So, here is how I’d make it. First drill out all the nut plates. Then put the pieces together and put a good layer of masking tape on the original piece. Trim the masking tape to fit the original piece and rub it to show the hole locations, then lightly rub a pencil on the tape to show the holes. Make a new piece of aluminum a bit larger than the original. Bend the lip with a brake and then roll the curve in rollers with a grove to accommodate the lip until the curvatures match. Carefully remove the tape and transfer it to the new piece. Trim the aluminum to match the tape. Drill the screw holes just slightly larger than the screw. If you have nut plate jigs, use them, if not screw the nut plates down and align the rivet holes with the original holes. Drill the rivet holes through the nut plates, or the jigs. Remove the nut plates and countersink the rivet holes. Drill the screw holes out to the same size as the original part size, this will allow the nut plates some wiggle room Rivet the nut plates on, paint to match, install on spinner and go flying. 1 Quote
sw1024 Posted April 18, 2023 Author Report Posted April 18, 2023 Thank you so much for the write up--I really appreciate that. Sadly, I am woefully inept when it comes to a project like this. I will run it by the shop where my plane is currently being worked on--they were suggesting that there may be someone who would be willing to weld it back together but I don't know how that works in terms of regulations/sign offs. Plane is two hours away--making it harder. This has been my worst annual since I've owned it...a number of parts we can't find. Thanks again--appreciate your time in responding. Quote

There are a number of hits on controller.com when searching the root p/n 680031. Some are the for full spinner assembly, no doubt, and would be pricey. If they are in fact the right spinner assembly for your aircraft. Is the shop holding up the annual for this part? Are they saying that structural integrity of the spinner/backplate assembly is lost because this piece is broken? Hmmm. I’m wondering if this part was broken in the course of performing maintenance, i.e., mx-induced? If not, investigation might be considered to determine why it broke. Something might be out of balance. I’ll shut up now… Quote
sw1024 Posted April 18, 2023 Author Report Posted April 18, 2023 Thank-you--I looked but need the -029 part of the S/N--there appears to be different types. The shop is not holding it up for just that--but they want to go in the replace or repair direction. I think these parts have failed at the weak point for others too--saw a couple of other posts in the past. I was hoping to find one as that is the easiest path for getting things done quickly. I'm just a little surprised that they are "unobtainable" per most of the MSCs I've spoken to. This is the first time I've had an annual where a few different Mooney specific parts are nowhere to be found. Makes me nervous that we're getting to a point where sourcing Mooney specific parts makes it difficult to keep flying. Quote
mike_elliott Posted April 18, 2023 Report Posted April 18, 2023 This failure on the ears typically is caused by 2 things. 1) the spinner front ring that slips on the hub is too loose. This should be almost a press fit. Shim up the front ring by placing some HHMW tape on the prop hub where the ring lands until the fit is very snug. if there is movement here, it will transfer to the supporting ears. 2) tightening down the ears should be done such that no moment arm is created at the shallow point where it fails. It also helps to stress relieve the sharp edges of the ears with some emery paper prior to installation. 2 Quote
sw1024 Posted April 20, 2023 Author Report Posted April 20, 2023 Thanks very much, Mike. I will pass this on to the mechanic. The prop is off and everything is getting looked at now. 1 Quote
