MikeOH Posted December 14, 2021 Report Posted December 14, 2021 Looking for wisdom from locals near Sun Valley. Wife and I planning on a flight to KSUN in early March and I'm unfamiliar with local weather and storm patterns that time of year. We are traveling from southern California. What's a good number of days to allow at each end of the trip for weather? While I'm IR, I'm thinking IMC that time of year in a non-FIKI plane is a seriously bad idea! Quote

Good chance a couple days on either end will be fine. Definitely unpredictable that time of year but it’s clear and sunny between systems. You’re right, ifr isn’t a good idea as MEAs are very high and approaches in there aren’t great anyway. 1 1 Quote

Just the confirmation I needed. Thanks much! Important thing is the wife is okay with a couple of days; socked in for a week...would not go over well! Quote
PeteMc Posted December 15, 2021 Report Posted December 15, 2021 I grew up in the NW (eastern WA) and in March you can have some gorgeous blue sky days. However... we were never surprised when we had a mid March dump of a couple of feet of new snow for spring skiing. So as long as you have a flexible schedule OR you can come back for you plane if you have a "must leave" date. Then you should have a great trip. Quote

No 'must leave' date; I think that is a bad combination with light GA flying. Quote
