Just wondering if any of you have tried out Flying Eyes sunglasses—and if so, what is your take on the product.  My husband and I visited  their booth at Oshkosh and was interested in many of the features, but couldn’t pull the trigger because of the price.  Are they worth it?    I’d appreciate any advice you can give.    I’m thinking of giving them as a gift if the feedback is positive.  Thanks.  H

I buy prescription Eyewear from Zenni Optical. The prices are shockingly, unbelievably low. In addition to my daily wear glasses, I most recently purchased 3 pair of sunglasses, one set each lives permanently in each vehicle so that I always have some with me. All four pair totaled $200 . . . .

Happy shopping! Oh, Zenni is having a sunglass sale right now, too.

One company owns most sunglasses:

i remember when ray-bans aviators were $80 a pop. Now that they have been bought out by Luxottica they are selling the exact same sunglasses for $200! Is B.S.  that is how i found Serengeti sunglasses as they are still independently owned and did not sell out to Luxottica.
my favorite are https://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/13953

with the driver’s gradient tint. They are exceptionally clear and i feel my eyes relax the moment i put them on. You can’t buy them at sunglasses hut as the big Luxottica will not let you sell anything but their product so you have to find a specialty store or order on amazon and just return them if you don’t like them but i think they are worth it.

This is one of those rare conspiracy theories that actually turns out to be true.  There's a good episode on this on the "Adam Ruins Everything" podcast.

Any glass blocks UVB, and UVA blocking coatings are standard enough they should not be expensive.  That leaves the questions of tint, comfort, style and marketing.  The first two should not require a lot of money.  The last two, can, and do, cost s*&^tons of money.

I just wear prescription glasses and a hat.

Yep that’s why i went looking for a company that wasn’t owned by Luxottica because i wanted to see if there was something better or at least support the little guy so there is not a complete monopoly so prices can be kept in check. It just so happens Serengeti makes a damn good sunglass with excellent clarity.

I've never had the problem which Flying Eyes is supposed to correct - temple pain - so the price point doesn't interest me.

but, on the subject of sunglasses... A few months ago, I moved from glasses to contacts and found regular sunglasses way too dark for reading maps and charts. My photochromic prescription glasses always seemed to be perfect. I saw these on Amazon and figured, at the price, they were worth a shot. Pleasantly surprised. No idea how sturdy they are in the long run but they come with a case that looks like it would survive being dropped without a parachute!

How are the temple pieces under an over the ear headset?  If you wear one….you may wear the in the ear type where temple thickness doesn’t matter.

Thanks.

Temple pieces make over-the-ear headsets louder. I just thought that's how it was, until I changed my glasses (clear to sun, or vice versa) the first time. Much quieter with no glasses!

Now I wear QT Halos, and they don't matter anymore. Got my wife a set, promised to sell them if she didn't like having them in her ears. After a 30-minute local flight, her DCs are now a passenger set . . . . .

I don't think I'm the right person to ask. Other than a pair of UFQ L-2 cheap Chinese in-ear I use on the hottest summer days in a bubble canopy Diamond (a floppy hat fits over them for shade) I have used over-the-ear headsets all 30 years I have been flying, including some with clamping forces I didn't like. But I have never experienced the temple thickness problem people talk about.
