Peter Rejto
My Shadin indicates about .5 gallons/hr too low in fuel burn. I adjusted the K factor but the results were essentially unchanged. Is the formula I used correct? New K factor = Old K Factor * Actual Fuel used/Shadin Fuel used I verified that my K factor was increased and saved into the Shadin. I suppose I will just repeat until I get some change. I'd certainly prefer that the Shadin over reported rather than under reported! Thanks! Peter Rejto
Okay...it seems the formula I used is incorrect (and was taken from another thread on this forum where it is also incorrect)! https://mooneyspace.com/topic/4865-k-factor-for-m20j-with-io-360-a3b6/?do=findComment&comment=62575 I finally found this at Shadin: Edited May 16, 2021 by Peter Rejto
carusoam
Peter, if you share your K factor... Somebody might know what theirs is... This would make it easy to compare... but, if you changed your K factor and didn’t see a change... What happened..? expect a 1% change to be worthwhile... if you send a live link... we would know what thread you are referencing. ... Peter Rejto
-a- Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what a live link is but if you copy and past the link in my 2nd post it goes to the post where the denominator is reversed*. I've gone back to my original data and K factor and done the proper calculation. It wasn't that nothing happened...what happened is that my results were somewhat worse than before I made the adjustment but withing a range of error that it appeared to be basically the same amount of error. Next week I will test the new setting and I'm certain things will move in the right direction. Peter *I fixed that link above. carusoam
That Danb hasn’t been with us for a while... or we could discuss updating that post... He was pretty handy with electronic devices... Peter, How far off is your displayed gallons used vs. fuel purchased at the pump? There is room for improvement in filling and measuring techniques... important when precision counts... There is also room for plumbing improvements... There is also some maintenance issues that have been covered around here... If you are off by 1%... that is really good... I see Gary mentioned a challenge he had of about 10%... that wouldn’t go away... There are some pretty good ways to handle most of these issues... but is going to take discussing some details... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
PT20J
K- factor is how many pulses (in thousands) the transducer puts out per gallon. The Floscan transducers should be around 29.0. Each one is different and comes with a calibration tag and the K-factor is also engraved on the transducer. This calibration is at 16 gph and the tolerance is 1/2%. But accuracy seems to vary at other flow rates which is why the K-factor needs to be adjusted. If you decrease the Shadin K-factor, it will read higher and if you set the Shadin K-factor higher, it will read lower. Skip
Peter Rejto
A brief, but delayed update... Using the correct formula my Shadin is now quite accurate. However, a new issue has popped up during a recent 8 hour round trip from NSW to Adelaide that either involves my new Surefly or possibly a fuel flow issue. I'll be making a separate post looking for guidance. Peter
