I am thinking of replacing the instrument air filter in my 1987 201-LM - just to see if that does the trick of fixing the slightly weird behaviors of my gyros. The aircraft hasnt had an annual under me (got it new this January) and its likely the filter wasnt replaced last annual.

My question is where is the filter - behind the panel or in the engine compartment. Its probably behind the panel - in which case it will be a real pain to take out and inspect. Anyone know?

thanks in advance

There are a number of filters involved, and it makes sense to do the lot if you are having vac. problems.

The instrument filter is about 4"long by 3" dia and will be up behind the panel somewhere.  There should also be a garter filter on the regulator, the filter being a band you slip on, about 1" wide and 2" dia.  Then you'll have a filter between the regulator and the vac. pump - and if you have a standby pump, there will be another of these.  This last one (or two) are likely to be in the engine bay.

The garter filter is peanuts (about 2USD), the others are about 20USD each, depending on who makes it and where you get it from.

The filters behind the panel can be a git to get to, double jointed wrists and elbows might help!
