I was really expecting to see some type of metal from a factory new engine break in. But there was absolutely nothing. My IA says he’s never seen anything on the pick up screen.

Nor have I, but my neighbor who does RV condition inspections and religiously pulls that screen has found them full of metal.

Just too great a risk not to pull the screens on a periodic basis.  Makes one wonder why Mooney made them so inaccessible!

What is involved in pulling the screen?

Pulling all your hair out by the roots and contorting your body into a pretzel shape.

Other than that....no problem.  The task itself is simple.

I just cut open the oil filter and check the paper element. It can trap smaller particles.

Lycoming calls for both.

I seem to recall seeing a case where someone's screen was full of large pieces which were all too big to get through to the filter. If I remember right their filter was clean?

When my engine failed the entire pan and screen were filled with corn flakes and really not much in the filter. Not sure how a savable situation would vary from my catastrophic  failure.
