Well, what do you want to do?  There is everything in the Bahamas from canned vacations to do everything yourself.  Do you want to go fishing?  Deep sea or bonefish?  Scuba?  Just lay on the beach?

One good place is Treasure Cay.  Good airport to fly into.  No hotel on TC, but lots of private places to rent at in all price ranges.  Fish around on the Internet.  TC has a spectacular beach, decent food, passable bonefishing.  The best diving in that area is with Brendal Stevens out of Green Turtle Cay, which is a ferry ride.  There are also places in Marsh Harbour with fishing and diving.  If you want great bonefishing I would recommend Bonefish Ray in Bimini, or Bonefish Percy at Great Harbour Cay.

Treasure Cay. Fly into MYAT and then you take a $30 taxi down to the resort. The rooms aren't too bad and they give a pilot dicount. If you are planning on staying for more than a few days I would recommend getting a room with a kitchen and cooking some of your meals. They have a grocery store right next to the hotel and the prices aren't that bad. Trust me it'll beat a $75 dinner meal...nightly if your there more than a night! The breakfast is over at the cabana near the beach...its a good breakfast! Anway check out the web site http://www.treasurecay.com/ they also have a link to a boat rental company right at the resort. You can rent a boat for the day or week etc and go snorkeling/fishing etc. Again lots of things to do! If you have any other questions about Treasure cay just ask I was there this last Aug and Loved it! Also some advice make sure you carry at some cash. The ATM there gives you Bahimian $. Also make sure you still have at least $50 after the taxi ride on the way back to the airport for any possible custom fees! In all WORTH IT!!!! :) Have fun! :)

I completely agree with the nice words about TC, but would not stay at the hotel.  It is fairly old and a little ragged.  Also, it is on the marina side, and there are lots of nice accomodations on the beach side.  They are all private, you just need to go on the Internet and find one to rent.

If you go and spend a few days, here is the code.  If you arrive at the end of a week, go to the grocery store and do your shopping before late afternoon on Sat.  The grocery store closes I think around 5:30 and is not open on Sunday.  Shipments come in end of the week, so the pickings can get slim in the meat and produce departments if you wait to shop until Monday.

If you want a rental car go to the bakery (Florence's).  If you want a bonefish guide, also go to Florence's.  If you want the best caramel roll on the island and drinkable coffee, that is also Florence's.  If you want fish or lobster for cooking, used to be the place to go was Annie's (the laundry).  Annie passed on, so ask Florence where to go.  If Annie's is open again (it is right next to Florence's), they probably will have fish.

You can rent a scooter a couple of stores down, but I would skip that and would highly recommend renting bikes for everyone at Wendell's.  They are rickety old Bahamas bikes, but you never have very far to go on TC.  Many people rent a golf cart, there are a couple of cart rental places, but they are really not necessary unless you intend to carry a big load someplace (like snorkeling gear).

There is a dive shop on TC, but I would highly recommend taking the ferry out to Green Turtle to go diving with Brendal.  Better dive spots than they can reach from TC.

There used to be an older fellow who rode around on a green bike in the afternoon and sold fresh vegetables and Bahamian bananas.  I heard he got hurt, but ask Florence, he might still be around.  Better than the stuff at the grocery store.

If you are a really die hard bonefisherman, it is worth a trip down to Sandy Point if you can get a reservation with Bonefish Patrick.  Big fish.  Rent a car and drive from TC.

We are heading to the Bahamas the second week of March.  It will be our first time too.  We are heading south to Crooked Island for 3 or 4 days and island hopping for a few days on our way back to FL.  If you are going the second weekend of February, you may want to look into http://www.airjourney.com/.  They have escorted trip that sounds fun.  They take care of all the lodging, island transportation, food, etc..  My wife and I would be going on this trip but we had already made some concrete plans by the time I found out about it.  Possibly next year.

jlunseth, were you at the Bahamas seminar at KSTP this weekend?

I was there too.  I thought your above post sounded familiar.  I think the bit about getting good fish and lobster at the laundry mat gave it away.  I'm a realativly new Mooney owner and have yet to got to a MAPA seminar, so no that wasn't me.

We flew there last March, went to Freeport.  Condo on the beach was about $100/nt.  Got the condo thru this website:

We had a good time.  If I did it again, I'd try to do more island hopping.  I was a little anxious about the over water part of the trip, but I was well prepared and it ended up being no big deal.

Barry,

I just read both links you sent.  They were VERY informative.

I had thought there was some major changes about electronic manifests being mandatory.  Recenly, I read an article that said up until now they were issuing warnings for pilots that didn't step up to the new procedures.  However, the fines are upwards of $10,000 now.  Of course now that I am looking for it I can't find it. lol

Thanks again!  I am off to real good start in betting to the Bahamas!

Glad I could help, David ... I used to fly to the Bahama's a few times a year. Not doing it as much, now. My personal favorites were the out islands. Less "ugly American" syndrome there. The natives are friendlier and things are cheaper ... or used to be. My favorite place, Stella Maris Inn, has really upped their rates the last few years.

OK we have the info on the SE VMG web site.  .75 cents off per gallon of gas at Banyan Air Services @ FXE for SE VMG members participating in the Fly In.  I figured we could use them as our jump off point.  They will provide free life vests for anyone that doesn't have their own and a reduced rate on rafts if anyone wants to rent them. Free 4th night at Stella Maris if you pay for 3 nights and $300 credit for pilots flying in their own plane on top of the free night already being offered. If you stay the 4 nights it works out to be about $116.75 per night for an upgraded cottage which INCLUDES ALL OF THE TAXES AND OTHER FEES.  There are some cheaper rooms there as well.  I'm trying to work out some more discounts in the Bahamas but I need to wait for an accurate head count before I could do that.

Stell Maris said as of today there are ~10 rooms still available for May 26-May30. They will  host a welcome reception for the Fly-In as well; along with sending materials to anyone interested (Pilot materials, Bahamas guides, etc.). They are probably not able to give any further discounts in the way of food/drinks but can definitely assist us with a welcome reception and other activities if we could get five to ten aircraft to commit.

If you like to bonefish, anytime is good except the tail end of April through the first part of June.  Sharks give live birth and they come into the shallows in quantity at that time to drop their pups.  They herd the bonefish together, so you will be able to find schools of hundreds or even thousands of bonefish, and you may be able to get them to bite, but your chances of getting one to the boat in one piece are not good.
