Anyone know how to remove the gas discharge display on a KX165? The 1 looks like a 7 on one and wanted to clean the contacts hoping it would fix it.

  • Remove radio from tray
  • remove 4 small screws, 2 each end
  • pull off plastic bezel, clean it with water or plastic cleaner, not solvent
  • Display is one unit, glass, fragile
  • very gently and evenly pry display away from circuit board
  • note pins sealed into glass display unit are brittle so don't bend them
  • clean pins and sockets on pc board
  • pray the rosary
  • reinsert display unit directly, not rocking or see-sawing it, into place
  • reassemble bezel

Best luck!

Thank you Sir!

Is the display one piece? Meaning the gas discharge part that contains the digits that light up is integral  to the glass face we see on the outside? The whole thing comes off? Is tgere anything between display and circuit board? A seal maybe that can get ripped or damaged?

Should I try it?

It is one piece.

You may as well try.  Probably the display is failing & there are no new replacement parts available.

From time to time you can find good used displays for sale but (1) they are getting rare (2) they are not cheap.

I find lenses on ebay. Is the numbers display in the lens or is that a separate part? I'm a little confused.

Here's an example. Is this what I need Thanks.

Here is one KX165 display (not lens) listed on eBay.  The seller has more than one, and he will do the installation.  $695 OBO.

Thank you Jerry.

I went flying today and was planning afterwards to remove the radio and bring it home to my workbench, aka kitchen table. But much to my pleasant surprise the display was fine! So I'm leaving it alone.

At Oshkosh this year, I dropped by the Bendix-King booth and learned that they are selling new fronts for the King 155 and 165 radios.  The new fronts include new LCD or LED displays (depending on the model), new knobs, and new plastic covers over the digits.  The price seemed reasonable enough for avionics.  If you can't find a replacement display, check out this option.
