I have noticed yoke vibration on the pilots side of my m20e 1974. I am training for an instrument rating and flying one handed has really amplified the problem.

It is tricky reading the plates with the vibration. Co-pilots side is fine. There appears to be a block that supports the shaft. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

The glare screen that hangs over the instrument panel also vibrates a lot. Prop balancing? The plane runs great with all cylinders monitored and great compression.

Thanks Kevin

Kevin,

put the words 'yoke vibration' in the search box.  You will get some responses.  I don't recall anything that stands out for the actual cause.

Best regards

It sounds like you just need to find an rpm that smooths everything out, and in the future probably a dynamic prop balancing.  I balanced mine for 2400 rpm, but depending on its mood, it likes 2350-2500.  No rhyme or reason and it changes day to day.

You should do a magneto check at altitude to make sure it isn't ignition related.

How well are your EGTs balanced?  There is a chance you have an injector that is on the verge of clogging.

Check the rod end for ware at the aileron/elevator attachment at the back of the yoke shaft. That's about all I can think of. Dynamic balance might solve it too. You should do that anyway.

Try to Have Fun with your IR. Popping up on top is one of my favorites things to see.

I don't know what you have on your 1974 (original yokes or upgraded to the newer style). On my 1975 F I had the yokes upgraded to the J style back in 1997. This included new yoke rods. I noticed on my co-pilot yoke there is more vibration and play than the pilot side. I had the shop look at it and they said there is some sort of roller bearing that appears to be worn. I haven't done anything with it yet but wonder if something like this is involved in your problem. As Matt pointed out there are a few things attached under there and any excess play could magnify a vibration.
