We are planning a flight with two Mooneys  this fall from the east coast to Glacier NP and then on to Calgary/Banff area.  The prices we're getting for parking near Calgary are incredibly high....$55 per night for each Mooney is about the best we've seen.

Does anyone know of a good option?  We'll have to have access to a rental car somehow...which may complicate things.

Thanks, Karen

Just as with the USA, bigger airports have fees, smaller ones don't, I've paid more in the USA for parking than at home.  Self serve fuel is rare.  If you stop at CYKF Kitchener Ontario the local MSC will give you free parking and maybe a car.

Woohoo road trip!!!!,, no air trip , better

Here is an idea. Maybe this is old info .

WELCOME TO SPRINGBANK!

Located just 45 minutes from the town of Banff, and only 15 minutes from downtown Calgary, your crew and passengers will feel at home in our comfortable flight lounge with digital satellite television, complimentary coffee, snacks and cold drinks. We also provide Rental cars by Budget available by reservation or by calling ahead.

Upon arrival at our full Service FBO, your crew, passengers and aircraft will be looked after by trained staff here to assist you in any way possible. Ramp & Hanger Fee's

over night on ramp 15 dollars

over night on grass 10 dollars

PLUS THEY HAVE Rental  cars

100LL  about 1.83 per liters,,, I don't know what that means. (3.7 l =1 gal,  1.83 x3.7= 6.77 CD /gal MAYbe I did that wrong , )  skyvectors says gas is $ 4.75

What about calling to see of you can use a private airport; De Winton South Calgary (CEH4)

Yes CYBW is the airport you want but there is not alot of parking there, Springbank Aero might but your only choice, but sometimes you can get parking at The Calgary flying club, its worth the call. The gas will also be a little cheaper there.  The alternative airport is HighRiver but its 50km or so south of Calgary, not really worth the trouble. Your obervation is accurate though, Im based out of spring bank and went to the east costlast summer, its much cheaper to fly in the USA.         Ottawa international was $105 a night, with no tiedowns and poor service and gas was 2.72 per litre. GA is much smaller in Canada and you pay for it.

30H,

I hope you get to share your trip with us here on MS.  It's not quite like flight following, but can help you find parts and services along the way.  :)

+1 for the Kitchener MSC.

When will you be going?

Best regards,

OK, thanks for the replies!  Yes, I have contacted Springbank directly and verified that the tiedown per night is $55 for our Mooney.....$160 per night for a hangar (which we wouldn't use...)  Those are Canadian $$, so not quite so painful....

I understand that tiedown is probably extremely limited at Springbank Aero...so the $15 tiedown is probably not going to be available.

Late August is the timeframe.

Just thought there might be an alternative...but guess it's not quite what we're used to in US....

If you could show your route somehow.... I am in the Ottawa area... if you want to spend the night in the area let me know and I will let you know what options are around.

I fly to Springbank regularly from the Seattle area. I use Executive Flight Centre (http://www.executiveflightcentre.com/Springbank#ad-image-0). Last time I was there (January), it was $35/night CAD, with the first night waived with fuel. Fuel price was $1.92/L CAD (GST included). I'd suggest you give them a call.

If you haven't flown to Canada before, ensure you have the CBP Decal, comply with eAPIS and have both the FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit and FCC Aircraft Radio Station License. Springbank is a CANPASS only airport (so you need to be a CANPASS member to clear customs there); if you decide not to join, you'd likely want to clear customs at Lethbridge.

I'd avoid Calgary International at all costs. With landing fees and ramp fees, a single landing would be around $300 CAD.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Edit: Here is a video I did a while back about landing there:

I would also chose CYBW, but if you're lucky enough to have clear weather and light winds why not consider a trip to Golden, BC (CYGE)?  One hour from Springbank along the Transcanada highway. The view of the Rockies through that pass is amazing.  Much better at 10,000 ft than at 30,000 ft!

Just watch that mountain wave!  The winds channel through that pass from the west.

I don't think you can clear customs at Lethbridge .. not a port of entry.  Last time I cleared at Regina and avoided hefty fees, then went west to Medicine Hat and then to Springbank.  I did have the experience of clearing at Calgary International before.  Very friendly controllers and FBO staff, but the NAV Canada landing fee left me hurting.

Actually, it is: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/do-rb/offices-bureaux/651-eng.html
The smaller AOE's which can accommodate up to 15 pax appear on another list on the CBSA website: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/do-rb/services/aoe15-eng.html
I also highly recommend CANPASS: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/canpass/privateair-eng.html

At YYC, the minimum landing fee is now $92.50 CAD (http://www.yyc.com/Portals/0/Tariff%20January%202016.pdf) in addition to the $10 NAV CANADA terminal fee. Esso's AVGAS tank needed replacement and they opted not to replace it, so Shell (now Signature/Landmark) is the only provider of AVGAS. Their ramp fee if you take less than 200 litres is $135 CAD. So you're looking at $250 CAD after tax for one landing.

Note that ALL those items are U.S. government requirements only, not Canadian.  Don't blame us !

Cool trip, do let us know how it goes. I have a cousin in Calgary and a daughter in B.C. so a trip to Canada is in my future. However, I intend to ease into it with visits to Montreal and Toronto 1st (modest hops from CT).

Good luck!

We used golden as our gateway...after glacier you continue up Columbia river valley..clear customs at Cranbrook than another 80 or so to Golden.Rental car available close into town and will pickup.Nice drive to Banff / lake Louise...Calgary route to Banff not nearly as scenic...watch out for skydivers at golden ,fuel prices not bad for BC
