N601RX Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 I been looking at different options for live radar and realized that with the change to HDTV about a year ago that a couple of the stations in our area are broadcasting continuous live radar on their side channels. There are several small portable LCD tv's (2.5 to 7 inch) on the market for less than $200. Does the TV stations in other areas have continuous live radar or weather ? Does anyone know if the HDTV signal is available up to 10,000ft? Quote
KSMooniac Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 interesting thought...I doubt the TV signal is broadcast "up" with any appreciable power. I suppose if you had a comprehensive list of all of the TV stations with a weather sub-channel it might be useful, albeit with a bit more workload than an XM solution. Quote
HopePilot Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Interesting idea. Someone should try it up to 10,000 feet. Quote
Barry Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 You won't receive any TV signals @ 10K unless you are VERY close to the transmitter. TV frequencies are line-of-site and the stations use gain antennas to maximize their viewership. These antennas take power from the higher and lower angles of transmissions and focus them on the horizon. Quote
