carusoam Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 Call your friend a random derogatory name... He put an electronic device into a known fire starter. My 65C's was clearly marked 'Liter'... Think twice before you tell the FAA that your friend plugged a 12V electronic device into a 24V cigarette lighter... Other things I have learned.... (1) Even the cheap knock-off devices have labels regarding 12 or 24V usage. (2) The cheapest of devices may not. If it doesn't have a label, spend another dollar to get one that does. (3) Finding an adapter for 24V may be challenging. There are plenty available. There are a few cars and trucks that have moved to 24V systems as well... (4) All cigarette lighters may look the same. Plugging in the wrong device usually blows a fuse or pops a circuit breaker. Coins have a tendency of finding that hole in ashtrays repurposed as coin trays. (5) Cigarette lighters have always sucked at being a source of electricity. Even in the automotive world, they are not standard dimensions. (6) one way to know the voltage at the socket is to measure it. Plug in a portable 12/24V Garmin GPS and find the voltage display. (7) Somewhere after Y2K. Cars came with multiple outlets. Kids have a tendency to put things that don't belong in the large socket... (8) Somewhere after my plane was built, some sockets have a voltage step down converter wired in. Don't expect to find 24V in that socket just because it is a 24V plane. (9) some devices won't charge at a high enough rate to keep from running down the battery while using it.... (10) some people have put additional plugs in the hat shelf area for ADSB devices. Imagine plugging in the wrong device that far away? Or having an errant coin or something fall into an unprotected socket... This is a good topic as we move from a society of cigarette smokers to one that uses cell phones, iPads and ADSB....
PTK Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 No fires in the cockpit from el cheapo chargers! Get a high quality purposefully engineered charger! I researched these things extensively and came up with the Scosche reVOLT C2. I feel it's the best of the best! Sleek low profile, ultrafast charging with lots of amps and very highly reviewed. Two charging ports, of 12W, 2.4 amps each. Can have 2 iPads drinking from a fire hydrant! Can never have too much amperage. Amps mean charging speed. IPad requires 2.1 amps and iPhone 1amp. http://m.thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-usb-car-charger/
jetdriven Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 thats the same one I have and linked to. Its awesome to charge two ipads at once. 1
PTK Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 thats the same one I have and linked to. Its awesome to charge two ipads at once. This one is the C2. It's 12W/2.4 amps per port. The one you posted is 10W, 2.1amps per port. Still a ton of amperage! 1
