Replacing M-20 Turbos Exhaust

M20E with an M-20 Turbos system installed.  Likely needs the exhaust system replaced.  I believe the STC holder is not longer in business, so I'm having difficulty find a system to buy.  From my reading its different than the standard exhaust and the rayjay exhaust but potentially the same as the bullet exhaust.  Regardless, I'm looking for any advice on options for replacing my exhaust system.

I had some issues with mine. I took the system off, made a jig out of MDF.  Ordered replacement tubing on line. Took it to my favorite TIG wizard and he cut out the bad part and replaced it.

 

The system is made out of seamless 304 stainless.

Anyone know about Acron Muffler?  I am getting quotes on my M20R.  I have a small leak at the stacks but want to send out everything for overhaul if I am pulling them off.  Acorn quoted higher on the muffler but lower on the stacks (with exchange vs overhaul).

Thoughts on CBs...

More of what they are, not where they are from...

They are not to be confused with Ciruit Breakers...

Some people take it to a highly technical level.

Norm Smith put it in writing, long before MooneySpace was around...

It's an admirable method of achieving the same thing that only AMUs can provide otherwise...

Some CBs graduate to a higher level. Their panel has acquired a GTN and an AOA for tremendous added capability. But the other instruments have been updated one at a time with a specific cost / benefit ratio. Probably installed with great planning before an owner assisted annual.

Generally, a good CB can get it done right, for less.

I believe as an A&P I can do weld repairs on exhaust systems as long as I have approved data. The only data on the drawings indicates that it is 304 SS. Welding is covered quite extensively in AC 43.13-1B and that would constitute approved methods. I supervised someone who is a real artist with a TIG torch. I believe I'm allowed to do that. This welder builds exhaust systems for experimental aircraft in his spare time. 

 

I replaced a melted section of the crossover pipe near the turbo collector. The hardest thing was finding someone who could form the slip joint on the 304 SS. I found a shop who built custom exhaust systems for race cars and hot rods. They do everything in SS so they had a powerful hydraulic expander. They charged me $10 for making the slip joint.

 

All together the repair to the exhaust system cost me just over $100.00 and about 8 hours of my time. And the system fits better now then from the factory.

Fuck that unless you're taking some exotic alloy. I'm almost a commie on this board. I am all about everyone making a good living. I have also welded before. 4000 is insane for an exhaust fix. I had my entire engine mount rebuilt for well under that. There is such a thing as good life and then there is gouging. Call me CB.

The A&P can farm out the work and inspect it for airworthiness, just like you did, then make a logbook entry for it. Only problem is finding someone who is willing to do so.

Wait until you have to buy exhaust parts for your Bravo. Lycoming prizes their exhaust parts as highly as their cylinders.

Fuck most a&ps god bless their souls should not touch a tig welder anyway. That's a specialist job at maybe 40 bucks an hour, no matter what it is, but 4k for an exhaust is nuts.

Everyone says that, but my TIG guy says it's almost the exact same motion as oxyacetylene. He claims it's just as easy.

So, Knisley is out.  They say they didn't make the original exhaust, or "that was a previous company" whatever that means, but either way they don't have a complete system they can sell me.

 

So on to "repair", I guess the A&P sent it to an aviation exhaust specialist due to a crack.  The specialist determined the entire system needs to be replaced/rebuilt.  Now my and the A&Ps hands are tied.

Well, you don't have to buy them from Lycoming. I assume you are referring the the exhaust transition. Acorn "overhauled" mine for 1100 bucks vs 8000 new from Lycoming. Quite frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they actually make them for Lycoming.
