N601RX Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 It looks like plane power has been purchased by Hartzell. It says they plan to eventually move the manufacturing to the Montgomery, Al facility. This is the old Kelly Aerospace manufacturing facility. http://www.plane-power.com/news_7-29-2014.htm

NotarPilot Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 Why is that a bad thing? Did I miss something recently?
Rwsavory Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 Why is that a bad thing? Did I miss something recently? I'm guessing less competition since Hartzell already makes a line of alternators, including the former Prestolite line. Potentially higher prices going forward.
KSMooniac Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 Not to mention their built-in infant mortality infecting a good line of products. Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
N601RX Posted November 4, 2014 Author Report Posted November 4, 2014 When they purchased the Skytronics AeroLite ignition harnesses a couple of years ago they already had their own line of ignition wires. Now they only have one line and they are priced around $100 more than Skytronics sold them for. I remember a few years ago a couple of members had new Kelly alternators that came on re manufactured engines and were trying to sale them on here. They had to reduce the price several times and it took a long time to sell them.
jetdriven Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 My 4 yr old 400 hour Plane Power AL12-P70 just started acting up. I think the rectifier is bad and the rear bearing is certainly bad. I am in touch with the warranty dept and we're having a pow-wow tomorrow, but this isnt the plane power that repairs your alternator and quick turns it. This is Kelly-Hartzell which replaces it instead of repairing it but cant tell you the price when asked. Stay tuned.
BigTex Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Send it up to Aaron with Select Avionics at Lancaster Airport. He'll IRAN the Alternator for a fair price.
Guest Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Why is that a bad thing? Did I miss something recently? The problem is that Kelly Aerospace bought up many third party component companies and turned good products into crappy products. Most people won't touch anything with Kelly Aerospace on the label. Now the trend is continuing with Hartzell. Consider what has happened to Slick magnetos since Champion bought them, more junk. Sadly the same is likely to happen to plane power. Clarence

Even the Lycoming version with the weird proprietary rectifier? Nearest I can tell its a Suzuki Samurai alternator but it's externally regulated.

garytex Posted November 7, 2014 Report Posted November 7, 2014 My experience with Kelly was also bad. I can't even remember part what it was, just that the lesson: I needed to stay away from any of their branded products
