Hi gang,

After suffering the dreaded belly landing last July, I nearly have my bird back up in the air. My last quest is to replace belly antenna. I'm not sure what some are, but have an idea. My avionics are all king, with rnav/DME vor, marker beacon, storm scope. Two identical blade like antennas fit on belly on either side of nose gear. Not sure what they are. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty sure that my large blade was a vor/DME.

Question: are antennae for king equipment a specific brand?

also looking for used equipment.

Thanks

Antennas are tuned for frequency, and are not brand specific. DME and transponder use the same series antenna, we have a RAMI AV-74 Shark fin for both and they are cheap. Get two of those, one for transponder, one for DME.  Marker Beacon reciever uses a Comant CI-102 or a Rami AV-64.  Stormscope WX-8/WX-10 use one series of antenna, some have a single cannon plug, some have that plus a coax cable.  WX-900 uses its own antenna, IIRC a NY-163.  The WX-950 and WX-1000 also share a unique antenna. Remove, compare part numbers, and check eBay, new ones are around two grand each.  Belly whip COM antennas are not so common on Mooneys, but thy are not expensive either.

Chris, I think you post just to up your post count!!!

Nah. I typed out a nice long message with the difference between blade, marker beacon boat, whip and post antennas and posted it. Then I saw Byron's message at the same exact time with all of the part number details. My answer would have looked like a feeble attempt at that point. So, I deleted everything and said "Byron has you".

Thanks fellas. Good news is that engine passed inspection and requires a few small replacement parts, crank gear, locking plate, etc. I appreciate the feedback. I have all skins ready to go and my mechanic will help me identify the replacement antennas. I was hoping to get a jump on purchasing those antennas, but I'll wait. I'm looking at flying again 2 weeks from now, if all goes well.

Cheers

Also, I looked at those parts online. The prices are hard to beat! My old belly shark fin was longer and wider, so I may get a slight increase I speed with smaller antenna.

Those shark fins are 0.09 lb of drag at 250 knots, or basically nothing. The ball on a stick antennas (that student pilots bend thinking they are fuel drains) are .5 lb, and the cylinder style ones are .85 lb of drag.... Ten times as much! Com rod style antennas are similar.
