HopePilot Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 So I went down to Aircraft Spruce today and bought some Corrosion X. Any tips on where to spray? Can I spray with wild abandon into the tailcone and wheel wells? Anything I should avoid? Haven't a clue where to start. Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 Talk to a Mooney Service Center about their typical places they spray. The previous owner of mine did it every two years or so. Sitting outside for the first year of my ownership it's been nice to know it's in there. Now that the TSTC airport opened up patio hangars for $50/mo. I took that so I don't see as much rain and such. Quote

HopePilot Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 Thanks Parker, I should have clarified that I'm talking about just the 16 oz. trigger spray (not the fogging done by the pros). Looking to just do some small spots. Quote
Mooney65E Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I used the same product as you have during annual when the access panels were all removed. I lightly sprayed nearly everywhere I could see two pieces of metal joined by rivets. Corrosion X has extremely powerfull penetrating capabilities!!! It's been over 5 years since applied , and I can still see traces of penetrant wetting around the rivets in certain locations. Some advise...if you plan on painting your aircraft anytime soon, wait until after it's been painted as paint will not adhere to corrosion X. Great product for the money!!!! Quote
fantom Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I use a pump sprayer with a 32 oz bottle of ACF 50, every year or so, around annual time. Quote
bgpilot1 Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I think I read somewhere to be careful around the autopilot roll servo if you have one. Perhaps someone else can clarify or provide more info. Quote

Sven Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 Jim, do you use a straight spray pot or is there some sort of tube-extention on it to reach into tight places? Do you spray the plane inside or outside the hangar? Thanks, Sven Quote
MooneyMitch Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 Hi Sven. I have the Corrosion X spray unit/wonds including the application manual which includes the size of the compressor CFM required for proper application. I would be happy to make a copy of the application manual and get it to you. Quote
N6843N Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 As a mechanic I have mixed emotions about the use/overuse of any of these types of products. I have seem aircraft that have had so many aplications that it makes doing a proper inspection next to imposible without first removing some or most of the corrosion treatment. I do use it but only in areas where it is almost impossible to treat with methods that are layed out in the 43.13. I have not used any of it on my own Mooney as the entire airframe was zinc chromated from the factory, I marvel at the workmanship everytime I open a panel on my bird, compared to the type "C" and "P"s I have to work on. Sven Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Before being rescued, our plane sat outside in the bay area for 15 years. A couple of treatments over the years would have saved us a lot of work. Now she's in a hangar but we regularly fly over the coast. We've got most of the corrosion tackled but we want to make certain this bird keeps flying. We've already had to replace the rudder and a flap due to corrosion issues. A can of Corrosion X is a lot cheaper than a flap. Sven Quote
HopePilot Posted June 13, 2010 Author Report Posted June 13, 2010 Question: I want to spray the main gear attach bracket (i.e. doghouse assembly) where it is rivited to the spar, but I'm not exactly sure where that is (yes, I'm a noob). Anyone have a picture? Do I have to be careful about Corrosion X seeping into my fuel tanks if I spray into the wrong place? Quote
jelswick Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Having sold a lot of airplanes (all brands) and seeing what corrosion can do to them, I'm an every two years Corrosion X customer. I have it done every other annual and it's cheap protection vs the cost if you end up needing corrosion repairs. If you let corrosion take its toll, the repairs end up in the aircraft logs and that's one way to turn away a lot of potential customers as well. Quote
