RocketAviator Posted December 28, 2013 Author Report Posted December 28, 2013 does he have an ipad? He does and that is part of the problem. He has had some problems with it and does not have an autopilot so when it goes a miss it causes him great grief and potentially an unsafe flight condition. Quote
kerry Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 great deals on ebay for hand held gps's Quote
OR75 Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 although the iPad has not been specifically design for use in a cockpit, i do not recall ever loosing signal, even without an external antenna. if anything, the battery of the iPad lasts longer than most handhelds i have come across ( Garmin, Lawrence) I am not sure what kind of problems he has had with the iPad, but i wonder if he may not get the same with a handheld. Also, what does a handheld have to do with the autopilot ? fly and stay safe Quote
DS1980 Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Dibs on the free 295. I'll pay shipping. Quote
RocketAviator Posted December 28, 2013 Author Report Posted December 28, 2013 auto - pilot / hand held. He has the Ipad mounted on the right side of his panel and when the issue happened he was unable / unwilling to take his attention off flying to see / try to get the IPad back in operation. Quote
OR75 Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 I still do not see how a handheld will help. Quote
Hector Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Is he using the iPads built-in GPS, or an external GPS. I've never had the external GPS drop out in the iPad. Maybe a cheap $100 solution. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
Marauder Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 Once I find it and verify that it still works, Lacee has first dibs on it. Quote

N601RX Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 If its been sitting for a while and takes 30 minutes to acquire the satellites the small internal memory battery may need to swapped out. You can buy these from digikey for about $2 and there are some photo guides online on how to change it out. The one in my 396 died a couple of years ago. It takes less than 30 minutes to swap it.
