It's awesome and works great. I was just pissed off that two months later someone else came out with a unit with the same features at half the price. Otherwise, love the Clarity.

Have it, like it, but a week after I got it the second generation stratus came out for $899. I was debating a switch back to Foreflight so the timing sucked. I was leaving on a month long trip so I kept the Clarity/WingX combo. The SV part is strictly novelty, wouldn't spend the money on that part again. Not saying I wouldn't use it if all else failed, but...

I heard some folks had some overheat issues which prompted Sagetech to send out these little sun-shade things for them, but I haven't had any issues like that and I used it here in Vegas over the summer.

Agree with what 201er says above.

Sometimes I still want to switch back to Foreflight but you're locked in once you buy something like this. That's not a knock against the Clarity itself of course.

ok I am a little slow here, so help a poor guy out... and see if I understand it correctly!

The Clarity is an OK or better unit but you don't feel the SV upgrade is worth the money, does that include the burst data function that SageTech Clarity touts?

You mention and I see that Foreflight does not currently support the Clarity unit, while I am not specifically planning on using Foreflight but I don't want my options limited either.

This whole effort is to accomplish a non-aircraft powered backup in case my Glass panel goes south.  My intention is to use the Xavion, new mini IPad and possibly add on a software such as FlyQ, Foreflight, WingX or something else.

I see an online comparison where the Clarity preformed better in their comparison, any thoughts on this?

Anything else I should consider or know in making this decision?

All kidding aside thanks for your help and feedback, I appreciate it!

When you're spending that kinda money, you might as well get SV! I never use it but it's a backup, so good to have. Takes no additional space. Nothing works on foreflight but their proprietary Stratus unit. So in a way, you need to choose between foreflight/wingx as much as stratus/clarity.

Lacee -- I started this thread exactly for the reasons you mention: http://mooneyspace.com/topic/9394-portable-ads-b-solutions-moment-of-truth/

I'm waiting until the dust settles on this mess. With the exception of WingX, once you commit to an antennae, you commit to the app. WingX allows different antennae to be used with it. ForeFlight & Garmin Pilot do not. If you like the WingX app (I don't like the GUI), then you do have some flexibility to buy an antennae that will give you an "out" capability.

Guys like Brett have gotten around this by purchasing an "out" capable antennae (SkyGuardTWX) to work in conjunction with the Stratus unit supported by ForeFlight. You can do the same with Garmin Pilot by purchasing the GDL-39 and marrying it to the SkyGuard. The downside is obviously the cost; $699 to $899 for the GDL-39 or Stratus 2 and then $975 for the SkyGuardTWX: http://www.skyguardtwx.com/UAT_Transmitter.html

At some point I got to believe the competitive juices at Garmin and Appareo (maker of the Stratus antennae for ForeFlight) will lead them to introduce an "out" capable portable antennae to work with their apps.

You didn't mention what glass you have. I am waiting for the Aspen ADS-B solution to be introduced. When it is, I will upgrade to it and then buy either a Stratus or GDL-39 (I'm running both ForeFlight & Garmin Pilot concurrently) to take advantage of the "out" capabilities of the Aspen solution. It would be nice though if the antennaes by then had their own "out" capability.
