I'm still fairly new to the area but I think it really depends on what's most convenient for where you want to be. Even RDU itself is pretty GA friendly and, of course, such things a rental cars are generally  easier and less expensive at a bigger airport. I'd recommend Sanford (KTTA) but it's closed for runway rebuilding. Chapel Hill has an airport but you'll want to call in advance; it's been closing down for years and its GA friendliness seems to ebb and flow.

I stopped into RDU early this year, and was very pleasantly surprised. Friendly controllers, good access, no huge ground or air deviations. It was also conveniently close to our final destination.

+1 on RDU.  We used TACAir, and although the fuel was a bit pricey but you get excellent service. Just don't plan to fill up.  The staff was very friendly, and the rental cars were waiting right by the plane. In fact, as we were loading up to go we realized that we'd left the portable Garmin in the rental car that the line guy had already taken away for us. But he quickly went and retrieved it without any hassle.

I've also been pleased with RDU the couple of times I've been in there, using TACAir both times.  Once was a weather diversion, and they were able to set me up with a hotel and hangar the plane with minimal hassle and reasonable cost.  I haven't had occasion to fly GA into RDU very often, but it's worked well when I've been there.

Whatever you do, don't go to landmark at KRDU. In spite of the good service I've received at other landmark locations, the Landmark at KRDU is the worst FBO experience I've ever had, and from the reviews, it looks as if I'm not alone.
