  1. Hi all, It’s been “only” almost 2 years, but I finally have ADS-b out working. It all started with the purchase of my bird in 2017. I was assured that it had everything that was needed for the 2020 mandate: it had a 430waas gps and a GTX330ES, so, it should be fine. Three avionics shops later, we finally figured out that for the GPS unit to be the position info source, the GTX needed a RS232 connection, not the existing ARINC 429. And while the GPS gets traffic info from the transponder via ARINC429, you need to have the system configured so that on the GTX330ES the 429 “in” port is set to “OFF”, and the RS232 in port is set to “REMOTE”, and finally, the 430WAAS, RS232 out port is set to “ADSB+“ (on the IFD440 set to ADSB+g). if you leave the ARINC429 “in” port on the GTX330ES on, the box will prioritize the info coming through 429 over RS232, and your ADSB-report will show a fail. im mentioning the IFD440, because I swapped out the 430 recently, and while Avidyne tech support has been very supportive throughout this process, they were not aware of the 429 vs Rs232 issue/settings. if this info helps just one pilot, then it was worth me reporting on my experience.   3. Any opinions or comments about an "easy way" into this? Would it be satisfactory to acquire a used GTX330ES (or 330 then pay for the upgrade) and a used 400W/500W/430W/530W? I see that 330's go for 1-2AMU's (depending on ES upgrade) and I have seen 400W's for as low as 3AMU's. I know that the GTX345 has AHRS and Bluetooth, which is nice, but that individual device alone is more expensive than a used 330ES+400W installed. I have an SL30 nav/comm now and could add in a VAL COM2000 to account for the loss of the 300XL's comm feature.
  4. Hey guys and gals, Due to a growing family I've decided to put my J up for sale. I love the old girl and never thought we would part ways but all good things must come to an end. It's a great machine and well maintained with several annuals and visits to D Maxwell in the logs. 201PX has flown on average about 150 hours per year with a max one year of around 220 hours and a TT of around 1100 hours since I purchased her October of 08' . The engine was overhauled by Mena Aircraft Engines in December 2010 and has proven a solid performer in the 690 hours I've put on her since. It's a buy and fly plane. All of the Mooney "gotcha's" are in good shape...SB 208 complied with, tanks are leak free, gear pucks are in great shape and the airframe is corrosion free.   5. I upgraded my G-model's panel after purchasing it in mid-2015. Upgrades included adding a GMA-340 audio panel and GNS-430W (with 106A indicator). Not quite as glamorous as some of the other major upgrades I see on here, but in my mind it was a very affordable way to add a lot of capability to by '68. The GMA-340 was a major upgrade because the aircraft did not already have an installed 4-place intercom. So the interior needed to be pulled out, back seat jacks installed, the whole works. We took advantage of having the interior out to wire the aircraft for ADS-B out, but I won't be purchasing the transceiver until 2020 gets closer. When all was said and done, the airplane was in the shop for two weeks and the total install cost almost exactly $16,500, inclusive of all parts and labor. About $11,500 of that was the GNS-430W installation, and the remaining $5,000 was for the GMA-340 (majority of that being labor). I was going to simply install a KMA-24 audio panel and Sigtronics intercom, but my avionics technician talked me out if it and I'm glad that he did. Because the majority of the audio panel installation cost is labor, I would have saved less than $700 on the total installation. The GMA-340 is an amazing piece of equipment, and my passengers love the ability to listen to music on their own channel. I also like the fact that an extra $700 got me a brand-new piece of equipment instead of something that's been obsolete for 20 years. Jeff Landon of High Desert Avionics (based at WJF) did the installation, and I'd highly recommend him. This is the second installation I've had him do (the first one being on a club airplane) and I've been very satisfied. I'd be happy to go into any details if anyone is looking to do a similar upgrade
