  1. Hopefully someday I'll be able to upgrade my '62 C with one of these... http://www.ulpower.com/news/blog/ulpowers-new-six-cylinder-engines-available-now Fully electronic, and 40 lbs lighter!
  2. Definitely - so far I have invested 818R Kit w/extras $11,000 2002 Soobie $ 1,500 Assorted parts $ 2,000 And it doesn't look like we have much left to add, just assembly... You can follow along via: https://www.facebook.com/groups/347521355400965/
  3. The design is such that you can R&R the engine & transmission in about 2 hrs. So far we have left the engine and transmission alone, just replaced the consumables - water pump, timing belt, larger oil pan, etc. to make it more reliable. We want to get the car sorted and then start adding HP thru an engine rebuild. If we leave it at stock power the drivetrain should stay relatively reliable. We plan to buy a second donor and rebuild it for more go.
  4. It uses a turbo subaru drivetrain as a mid engine. We run at Road Atlanta, Roebling Road, Carolina Motorsports Park, Daytona Speedway, Virginia International Raceway, Watkins Glen... It is an excellent kit, I have built over 50 racecars over the years and this is the 1st "kit" racecar, much easier when you don't have to do all of the engineering.
  5. My son and I are building one of these to race next year: https://www.factoryfive.com/kits/project-818/
  6. FWIW: I have an uninstalled LASAR cowl enclosure - anyone want it, give me a shout, no reasonable offer refused. I have many of the LASAR mods already and love each one, just too lazy to install the cowl enclosure!
  7. I took bumper's advice - I bought a Zenith 701 last week to add to my collection. Slow STOL fun in the 701 and fast travel in the Mooney.
  8. Clear evidence you should do your absolute best to stay out of engine. Study the charts closely, as they dispel more than one myth. http://blog.aopa.org/opinionleaders/2014/03/13/do-tbos-make-sense/
  9. The flight school where I took my training had an engine reach TBO (2400) but it was running fine. They followed conventional wisdom and had it replaced. That plane had nothing but problems for months afterwards, everything from lack of power to sparkplug fouling. All of the items were directly related to the break in of a new engine. Sad fact is if they left it alone it probably would've gone on for many, many more hours before needing major service.
  10. Don't miss it at all! Enjoy!
  11. It is http://www.hondajet.com/ in Greensboro, NC - so far he loves the place.
  12. My A&P just took a job working evenings at the plant that produces these: He says they are a well designed machine...
  13. I'd keep my mooney but add a biplane and a breezy and fly each one to 49 states just to say I did it!
  14. LOL! I was going to wait for the "firesale" of ADS-B products in 2020!
  15. My mechanic got a kick out of my phone call too - he said I sounded pathetic trying to get it running! My financial advisor (wife) and I talked and we think it's time I moved from the open T-Hangar to an enclosed hangar w/power so I can keep the battery charged and the engine pre-warmed...
  16. Not going to make it, apparently my 2 yr old battery and/or oem starter isn't up to the task of starting in the cold of winter. My wife was looking forward to the short flight. Ya'all have fun!
  17. Morganton NC (Foothills Regional) [KMRN] automated hourly observation on the 15th at 6:35am EST (1135Z) wind calm, visibility 10 miles, sky clear below 12,000 feet, temperature -9°C (16°F), dewpoint -10°C (14°F), altimeter 30.43, automated station with precipitation discriminator, temperature -9.1°C (15.6°F), dewpoint -10.2°C (13.6°F). Flannel longjohns: check! Winter coat: check! Warm gloves: check! Duats: check! Headed to the airport to get wheels up - see ya'all soon!
  18. True, a LOT can happen in electronics in 6 yrs...iPads are only 4 yrs old!
  19. I already see the benefit from the weather and location of planes that have ADS-B. I just can't see me spending 1/2 the value of my airplane to get the "out" portion. Hopefully there will be an economy version soon!
  20. Here is a nice ADS-B article that explains a lot. I am hoping to avoid ADS-B out for a while until the prices get down to less than 1/2 the value of my A/C! http://generalaviationnews.com/2014/11/13/can-you-ignore-the-ads-b-2020-mandate/
  21. As long as the forecast stays VFR my wife and I will be there.
  22. We had the same problem - the Gates 7335 belt didn't fit so we went with a 7330 belt. I felt like Karate Kid today "Prop On, Prop Off, Prop On..."
  23. I always refer to it as "my johnson is UP!"
  24. I smashed my sunglasses once, they fell off the shelf above the nose wheel housing and when lowering the gear I pinned them to the housing. Gear up: Positive rate of climb ~85mph - I have found that if I wait too long and let the speed build the gear is harder to raise Gear down: abeam the runway #'s at the end of the downwind leg ~100 mph. Here's an interesting view of my gear going up at 0:54 http://youtu.be/PNwfGtToeEA
