  1. The M20J was tied with 252 for greatest Mooney of all time. Which year/version of the M20J do you consider the greatest of all time? Not just the newest or most expensive, but the most innovative, influential, aesthetic, appealing, and most ahead of its time?
  2. DTSB investigation final report is out, tailwheel was locked, right brake was mushy, had a lot of help getting out and surviving.
  3. If not Mooney flying, what sort of flying do you most see yourself doing or appeals most to you?
  4. If the right brake suddenly failed during dual braking, I would imagine the plane would swerve left while still holding the working left brake. But then be difficult to turn right. Pilot would panic approaching obstructions and continue braking hard. What wins a tug of war? Left brake or right rudder (and maybe right steerable tailwheel)?
  5. Dan confirmed that the tailwheel was not locked, "I never locked a tailwheel for any BE-18 takeoff or landing and this has zero to do with what happened. We typically don’t lock tailwheel for any L12A operation"

  9. Could it be that the mag is perfect now but the timing was off before… so the priming method used before was to help compensate for the issue, but now it requires less fuel during priming for a quicker start? Just thinking out loud.
  10. Ever wonder why it’s called peak? EGT goes up until you reach the peak and then it starts going down. You have to be less lean of peak than you have to be rich of peak to achieve the same CHT.
  11. It is if you’re used to flying something like this

  13. Is that an F-ed up J?? Had to do a double take. Are inner gear doors all that’s missing?
  14. Scott did a follow up demonstration video and briefly mentions Mooney again:
  15. Jug of iced tea and a jug of Gatorade. Drink one if sleepy and the other if thirsty. And piss bags. That’s about it really. You’d be surprised how much taking your shoulder harness and shoes off reduces prolonged sitting fatigue. Also, the QT Halo is the only headset that is still comfortable after 5 hours. 6 hours goes by in no time! Especially when you’re going somewhere 10+ hours away.
  16. Changed the airspeed indicator from miles per hour to knots.
  17. Yeah, wondered about that too. That lines up with about the bottom of my yellow arc. Maybe someone who followed his math can actually translate that into real Mooney numbers?
  18. If the wings remain attached, it still leaves some possibility of a late recovery
  19. Scott Perdue describes the recent in flight break up of N47WT. In the video he explains the importance of spiral divergence recovery training and demonstrated some G load math for varying airplanes including Mooney. Here is a good explanation of spiral divergence: https://aerospacenotes.com/flight-dynamics/spiral-divergence/ I’m not aware of any in flight break ups of a Mooney. Has it ever happened? Do Mooneys end up a smoking crater intact when they experience spiral dive due to spatial disorientation? What insight or advice do you have on this topic as it pertains to Mooneys specifically?
  20. Good luck if it’s Signature!
  21. I agree that the cheapest fuel isn’t necessarily the best fuel. Often there’s a catch such as the runway is really short or it’s in the middle of nowhere. If you want to reduce stress and risk, go for the bigger airports with services. Also check the hours for FBO you plan to use in Florida. Don’t be surprised they close at 6PM. Sometimes it’s cutting it close when you’re arriving from far away.
  22. Go IFR and bring Hefty Slider bags.
  23. Actually I’m more impressed with the ground speed a Mooney can make into a headwind. Some airplanes would literally be flying backwards and many others couldn’t make half my forward speed. Example: 50 knot headwind Piper Cub - 15 knots ground speed 152 - 30 knots ground speed 172 - 45 knots ground speed Cherokee - 60 knots ground speed 201 - 110 knot ground speed Tailwinds are fun but not as impressive. I’ve seen around 200 knots. I usually slow down in a tailwind to save fuel.
