Some day one of us needs to make a youtube video showing what Mooneys can do across its entire speed range. LOP I have had my J pretending to be a C152 in fuel flow and still get faster speeds than one. From there all the way to cruising at 75% ROP at 8k - theres a whole sweet range to operate in. And all of the above - with better mileage than my sports car !!

Bob from a theoretical discussion perspective - you could bank sharply and not stall if you dont touch the yoke or apply back pressure. The aircraft will unload the wings by putting the nose down. Its probably a certification requirement - I dont know (probably an aircraft stability characteristic) However, doing this in the pattern is problematic because the resultant rate of descent will look horrific and one will instinctively prevent oneself from falling by pulling on the yoke.

Checking for corrosion at pre-purchase
bd32322 replied to bd32322's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Thanks Wonder how that came about - I would think a surface that has sealant on it - wouldnt be exposed to corrosion .. unless the sealant has cracks and the fuel has water from condensation or otherwise -
AOA indicators I need to install one

Looking in the back is for cessna pilots =P

I preheat my engine and oil - so by the time I go to do my run-up its already past 100 - more like 120/130 I was more concerned about how long to cruise for - which you answered - thanks - looks like I am doing enough - with 2 flights per week for 1 hour and change - altho weather sometimes limits it to 1 flight

Ouch that is concerning .. so basically the corrosion is not visible until the sealant is off? Or it is visible once the fuel is out? -
I hope you are right. I typically see sub 300 CHTs in at least two cylinders in winter, the other two will be 310 or 320 or so. I have also blocked off the oil cooler with 1 strip of HVAC tape and I get 160 for oil temps. Probably need to add a bit more tape and get the temps up a bit more
-
Question: how long must a flight be and at what power? I typically fly for an hour plus 10 minutes for taxi, takeoff, landing (55% to 65% power). My oil temps are sometimes 190 and sometimes 160 if it is very cold out. I have my oil cooler covered with 1.5 inch wide strip of hvac tape recommended by my A&P. I'll prolly have to add one more strip now that its getting to be brutally cold.

Engine oil is lighter than water, so when you drained the oil, maybe the oil water mix came out first? If you followed the oil sampling procedure, you would have sampled in the middle of the draining process, thus getting no water. The only way oil and water can be in suspension uniformly throughout will be via an emulsifying agent (not sure if there are emulsifiers in engine oil)

There is a lot of china bashing regarding quality. The reason we have cheap Chinese made stuff is because there is a market of such stuff here. Example - tools - the serious mechanic who relies on his tools day in and day out will get something made by a reputable company at a premium. The weekened / monthly mechanic will make do with a cheap chinese make at one third the price. The chinese make your beloved iphones and ipads too. No - designed in the USA does not mean somehow it is built correctly. It is still manufactured with very high tolerances in China which is why you get a quality product and hence you pay a premium. In summary - China will build and give you shit and China will build and give you an iphone. It is all built to a price which is directly dependent on how much profit the company putting its label on the product wants to make. Example: jeans cost 2-4$ a pair - and sold for 20-60$ here!!! - check some documentaries and footage of companies negotiating with chinese companies at the cost of the poor chinese workers working ridiculous hours. It remains to be seen which direction Mooney takes - but I am going to be bet its taking the iphone route. Besides it only makes sense to have manufacturing where the client base is - who will buy new Mooneys ! Yes its depressing unless things change quickly here in the states regarding pilot population growth and flying costs.

Went up in the air to get some landing practice in gusty conditions that prevailed in the north east on new years. Learned a valuable lesson to wait for people to finish using the wrong runway and then land on the correct runway when no one else is in the air. Airport KFIT has two runways, 20 (3000 feet) and 32 (4500 feet). Winds were 11 G 17 from 240. Three aircraft ahead selected rwy 32 and I did the same to flow in with the traffic. I am sure by the time I touched down I had some tailwind causing me to land longer than expected. Waiting and selecting rwy 20 would have been so much simpler

Hi, I am trying to move up to a bravo or a rocket from my J and I was wondering if someone in the area (based out of KFIT) will be kind enough to show me their airplane. I just want to see cabin size for myself as thats the big difference between the rockets and bravos that I care about. And FIKI Thanks

Checking for corrosion at pre-purchase

Sorry should have mentioned this is for a M20k. I think the 1986 and 1987 models have the epoxy primer which makes them less susceptible to rust. -
I bought my first Mooney without having visited this site and taking advantage of the knowledge base here. However, I did do a pre-purchase inspection from a reputable MSC and was very happy with the plane. Unfortunately, I did not exactly know the details of what the shop inspected. Now that I am trying to move up to a different Mooney, I am wondering if there is a laundry list of things you would want to inspect regarding airframe corrosion (not engine). Can they actually be done during a PPI or are they too labor intensive? Can I myself take a look at any tell tale signs even before doing a PPI? Thanks

What do you want with the upcoming Part 23 rewrite

Reminds me of a show (BBC) Yes Minister or its follow-on "Yes Prime Minister". In the clip they are talking about a hospital that has no patients but is being "run" by 500 administrative staff maintaining equipment etc. I got reminded of this by your comment about the FAA not having anyone to rule over Watch this 2 min clip for the background And this 2 min clip: Enjoy! -
Another Air Asia plane missing

Yeah I was expressing confidence in airline pilots in response to some earlier posts about whether it is possible for a passenger to make a call while on the ground I dont think its possible for the passenger to make that call. I was saying that no one willingly goes through the purple stuff - which is why I was saying that the only way to stay away was to get a straight answer from the pilot saying he will fly through the bad stuff - which ofcourse no one plans to do and the answer to that will always be no. -

I would want almost everything that has been said above plus - How about an engine compartment fire extinguishing system - some heat activated foam release or something. Cabin heater via liquid instead of air and its associated CO leakage ? Modern switches EVS infrared cameras - I was thinking of installing one designed for GA aircraft when I was contemplating building an experimental - pretty awesome for shooting low approaches or flying at night. -

I think I can wait for the bureaucracy to roll ... But its very heartening to see AOPA make efforts in the correct direction. I especially love the semi-localized AOPA fly-ins and expos - I hope it stimulates the younger generation to join the ranks of pilots! Thanks for the good work George and of your colleagues! -

Actually its difficult to say if I would board the flight. I will place my trust in the hands of the professionals to divert and do the right thing just because I happen to know nothing about airline ops, jet aircraft capabilities etc. For example they could board the flight and wait until a window shows up during which a bunch of aircraft decide to take off. If on the other hand the weather is somewhere in between, I would expect the pilots to do the right thing and divert as necessary. The only way to not board the flight is to ask the pilots - hey are you going to fly through that purple section on the radar - if they answer yes - I am staying away. But it is never clear cut like that ofcourse. -
Thanks guys. Aerodon- thanks for the offer but I think I'll refrain from adding a HSI. If anything I might go the aspen route
-
I did want the aircraft for the long term - I would agree with you if it had been a gear up - unfortunately it seems serious enough that I will be spooked every time I hit a bump while descending close to yellow arc speeds - not fun for me. Thanks everyone for your inputs!
-
@carusoam, the logs showed all the parts that were replaced, mostly skins and flaps. No mention of spars and repairs were done by a non-msc, which is understandable given where the accident took place. I'll chat with the msc that normally maintains the aircraft and see what really happened. As the matter stands now, I am just going to wait for another plane and take my time selling my J.
-
Yeah no one injured and it does sound like a dropped/stalled aeroplane. He apparently hit 7 runway lights. Not sure how that causes upward crushing of the spar.
