green oil change
sleepingsquirrel replied to sleepingsquirrel's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
No! But I could use some of the oil to grease the pole to my bird feeder to keep the squirrels out of it. -
Hey! Is it OK to fly my Mooney near the oil change time and let the oil level go down to 4 quarts? It is easy to drain into one conatiner, I then use that oil in my lawn mower. Any excess goes into the fuel on my boat after a dilute and settle time. It's what I do.

My 0-360 has two compression rings. If the two gaps are lined up compression will temprorarily be low . Run the thing and the rings will probably rotate and give better compressions next check. My mechanic said put a 1quart of MMO in the oil and run it. I don't think that is necessary . I'm running mine and have plenty of power and oil is clean/not blowing out.

Homeland Security strikes again
sleepingsquirrel replied to AndyFromCB's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I was once boarded by the F.B.I. off the coast of Georgia. They came in on a beeline in an unmarked derelect looking powerboat with Fl. registration. At first they pulled up alongside a respectable distance away . They asked where I was going and if I was alone. When they asked if I was alone , I lied and said no. Then one of them said we're the F.B.I. and we're gong to board you. When I asked to see their I.D. the helmsman whipped the helm hardover and came down on my boat with something to the effect I 'll show you a badge or I don't have to show you a badge. I was going below to get my shotgun when I saw through the port light , someone handing life jackets from below, stenciled on the vest was ," work vest only". I was boarded and only in a split second did I save my life and possibly others by realizing thugs would not don a life jacket. It was really the stencil "work vest only " that gave me any idea that they were who they said they were ,Government. The jackass at the helm endangered everyone that day by not acting professionally. They looked me and the boat over, took the serial # off the shotgun, showed me I.D. and one of them gave me his card, which I have to this day. I was told that "I FIT THE DESCRIPTION OF SOMEONE THEY WERE LOOKING FOR". I tell this story because I know how quickly these things can spin out of control, NO , I was not being a smartass by asking to see I.D. It's my right to defend myself on the high seas. -

New Airmen Certification standards
sleepingsquirrel replied to wishboneash's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I've read that the whole thing is just a rewrite with different words. I read that not much changes for those already with a certificate. I read that new pilots to be are to expect nearly a 100% wash out rate unless they meet the commercial requirements. Then I read between the lines and determined that flying is a privilage not a right and that in order to meet an acceptable accident rate, the GA privilage will be revoked. I've gotten all this information from the internet pilot forums so it must be true. -
Are these required and is there a reference for removing them for ease of inspection. Seems I have read that they can be removed to prevent trash, mud & debris build up in the wheel well.

Owner Operating Handbook and Service Manual for M20B?
sleepingsquirrel replied to rockydoc's topic in General Mooney Talk
I'm having my wife scan a 32 page 1961 M20b manual tomorrow. It has a good deal more detail for an owner/pilot. It only takes 14 minutes to memorize. -

low compression one cylinder
sleepingsquirrel replied to sleepingsquirrel's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Yes we heard it past the rings. -
Hi, I have a 1961 M20B with an O-360 A1D engine. I've already decided to fly the engine another ten hours and check compression again. Has dropped from mid 70s to 60 (all other cylinders are mid 70s). I believe that there are only two compression rings on this engine and one oil scavenger ring. The engine is making good power with 1100 fpm climb and runs smooth. However this is the cylinder(#1) that the manifold pressure gauge is hooked to and about 6 hours ago I flew it for about an hour with the tubing broken (broken after take off) . There was no roughness or loss of power that was noticable at the time (leaned to rough then enrichen). I sincerely believe that the compression ring gaps have aligned is causing the differential compression test to be low. The starting sequence has always been like this : most often the first compression causes the blade to stop , I release the starter and re-engage and prop goes through with ignition and smooth start. Once and only once within the last 2 hours I saw the blade go through compression on to the next cylinder and then same as before "varoom" as usual. I knew that was telling me something. (Mechanic and I know this is leaking into the crankcase, we can hear it at the oil filler) but the oil is still very clean. What say you all? A. Put a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil and run it for ten hours. B. Take the cylinder off and check the rings C. Quit flying altogether because these things are just too damned expensive D. Have my wife increase my life insurance and fly like there is no tomorrow E. Run it for ten hours and see if the compression is still 60# or has increased

To B (hub) or not to B (hub)
sleepingsquirrel replied to Alan Fox's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I agree your prop is worth what you are asking. If I had to buy a prop tomorrow I would give your asking price, but my prop is fine. When you listed with the OBO option , people will plumb for the lowest price you are willing to take. I have an advantage because I saw your post here and I know the reserve price. Everyone else will have to submit offers until you accept. I didn't offer on Ebay because I knew what it was worth to me was not in your range. It sometimes feels like an insult when someone offers less than something is worth but OBO opens the door. -

I've been watching your prop for days on ebay. I wanted to buy it for a spare because I believe it will replace my McCauley D236C14B. I was thinking $2700 to put it in storage and wait until the MCCauley could no longer be serviced. Then I realized, I need a spinner and backing plate. So I bought a new furling genoa for my sailboat instead. I never made an offer because I saw the number of declined offers and thought the market is not meeting the owners appraisal of its value. I sold (gave away) a nice Cessna 150 in the last month. I was robbed! However the C 150 has a proud new owner and he couldn't be happier! I let it go for $500 less than another offer. I selected my buyer, a person who understands ownership and the responsibility of ownerhsip, not someone who would nit pick me to death after the sale for not being able to predict things that can go wrong with a machine. -
That sounds like my retirement plan. I received it in the mail yesterday; it's a plastic bag with a roll of duct tape with instructions to place the bag over my head and tape tightly around my neck unitl I reitre! WARNING! what ever you do DO NOT touch Awful_Charlies avatar!

This speed difference may explain why I feel more in control landing than taking off. Its always coming up to takeoff speed that I feel the most lack of control and possibility of side loading.

So, now it's time for me to upgrade to a long body. Just wait till I tell my wife.
