  1. Short and not sweet. How many of us would have our families fly in a SE jet (albeit one with an unducted fan) piloted by a single PP without* a type rating? Not I. This is a loophole, which, if you have enough money, is large enough to drive a truck through. My sympathies to the wife and children. Flame away. *A (reasonable) assumption.
  2. Hopefully, some reassurance: I've found that the analog oil temp gauge, with its non-linear scale, in my 231 appears to read high when interprolated. A digital reading of 185 degrees on the EI puts the analog within two needle widths of the RL. I trust the EI, which indicates an accurate ambient temperature when the engine is cold. You might consider a digital indicator such as http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/ei-digitalgraphic2.php
  3. Quote: maropers I've got an app called FlightPlan on my Iphone and Ipad - you set your planes parameters and it plots the envelope both full and empty - great little tool, takes a second to do.
  4. Hank, I suspect, alas, your pedagogical efforts are futile.

  6. Well said.
  7. Ward, thanks for the FlashPass tip. I've already downloaded it. It certainly appears to simplify the paperwork. (We enjoy flying up to the summer Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ont, but SWMBO has been put off by the mediocre lodging facilities in town. Suggestions are welcome.)
  8. I doubt that an intercooler makes a significant difference in EGT, and probably no difference at all in TIT which is mainly exhaust gases still burning. FWIW, I agree completely. I remember seeing an analysis that showed that the KCals removed by the IC are but a minuscule fraction of the KCals generated by the combustion events. Science confirming intuition.
  9. I wouldn't be sirprised. ?? Be who wants to eat a desert?
  10. "A" is a modest vowel: though first, not most common. It seems a shame to omit it when required in "separate" and abuse it unnecessarily in "definite." Have a great Memorial Day.
  11. Just facinating. (They're ALL either Pipers or targets to air carriers or military.)
  12. If the needle shows no indication, mightn't it be a continuity problem?
  13. I don't know the specs of the 1001, but it should make an effective, albeit large, paperweight or a small anchor. The physics and the technology dictate that, even if it "worked," the antenna is too small for adequate resolution, the power too low for effective range, and the MTBF too low for confidence. When it operates, it can give a false sense of security, and when it fails, it doesn't fail-safe. Modern data-link wx may not be perfect, but it's far better than what a Mooney can mount, especially compared to old technology and especially if used primarily "strategically," and used "tactically" with due caution. Save you AMUs and your payload. You might be interested in the following discussion: http://www.nwas.org/committees/avnwxcourse/radar_realities.htm
  14. Apologies to all in advance. Next time weigh the plane when the moon is directly overhead. That will reduce the weight some. True, you lose ~.0002 lb. Better yet, weigh it at the equator. You lose ~7 lb (0.3%) of its weight at 40 degrees latitude. (35,000 times more than the lunar loss.)
  15. Quick Exam on (certified) Aviation. Which term doesn't belong? a. Reliable b. Low cost c. Tested version of a 200HP Thielert
  16. Just a thought. It appears you're looking for a Mooney while also choosing a FI. I'd suggest, slow down. Find an instructor whom you like. Solo. Decide if you really want to pursue a PPL (and an IR, which is a good idea for a Mooney driver). Get some time, and then look for an aircraft. I'll probably get some blowback on this advice, but years ago my wife and I decided to get PADI certified. Piece of cake, but, after a couple of dives to look at fish, the experience paled: yep, they're there. Diving was not an activity either of us cared to pursue. Glad I didn't spring for the fancy kit.
  17. Quote: DonMuncy Thanks for the reminder Dick. One just needs to be careful they don't get the pressure too high when cold, trying to get it high enough when hot. I don't have any real knowledge on it, but it would appear that if you set it at during the summer, when really cold weather hits, it may go over the top limit.
  18. KBHC. Friendly, good fuel prices, 5k". Check out comments @ AOPA.
  19. Don, interesting info re the pressure pickup location. As I'm sure you know, the oil pressure is adjustable via a screw on the oil pressure relief valve. I had it tweaked up on my 231. It's a simple (cheap) procedure.
  20. Sorry for double deletions; (I give up trying to post pics.)
  21. Pick a day, Patrick! A nice day.
