  1. Quote: Piloto Luc I also made custom made yoke bracket for the 560 because the Garmin bracket was too big and articulated. I had similar problems with the MRX and switched to the Monroy Traffic-Watch. All false alarms gone. Unlike the MRX the Monroy unit shows traffic direction with a belly mounted antenna. It works very well. For $1K is a better deal than the Avidyne $12K. José
  2. Quote: HopePilot I believe that antenna is for a handheld radio, but I'm not sure. I was thinking of having it removed at annual.
  3. Hope, just wondering you have speedbrakes under your wing also..?...I see something sticking out on your bottom RH wing..
  4. Brett, I have the same set up Telex PC4 look at how I did it.... Anyway in summer I plan on throwing out teh intercom and go fo a basic PMA6000B replacing my KMA20... The MRX is going out in the long run gives to may false warnings giving me the kreeps....I am really going to save for a TAS600 Avydyne system in Eruope too much VFR traffic all around... The set-up for my AV80R is going to change also it's too high up.. I agree with jet driven comment that all these yoke mount scare me as they have potential of blocking the control and in a case of a crash...though I think it is possible with these newer units to fabricate something that won't be potentially dangerous .....I fabricated a support myself..at least less dangerous what was provided as yoke mount.... Your KMA24 can be replaced by a PMA7000 or KMA28 so you can remove the intercom ..there are some used units on the market... rgds Luc
  5. This said I am off to sleep to keep Flying Biorithm aligned with the 51N 004E ephemeris...enjoyed the talk cu all rgds Luc
  6. This means it's on you as the PIC to prepare yourself and be an honest judge of your capabilities.
  7. Quote: Parker_Woodruff I've toured Aspen's facility and it was a first-rate operation. To insinuate what the condition of their balance sheet is without any relevant information is questionable.
  8. Hey Luc... I have a series 2000, properly installed and haven't had a hitch. I concede the Sandel is a very rugged unit (hence my Lear comment), but please dont' be afraid of the Aspen. My research led me to understand: 1) Remote sensor unit issues were mostly installation related (poor shimming) 2) In the beginning, Aspen chose legacy avionics dealers who weren't properly trained and some didn't even have laptops for installations 3) Shutdown issues were among the very first generation units and those issues are resolved. If anything, Aspen's early concerns were the result of explosive demand. The only risk is long term durability and reliability. Aspen's corporate behavior has be exemplary thus far and if the units start crapping out, I am certain they will back them up.
  9. Quote: Mazerbase I think all electronic appliances have the potential for ealy demise but once past that stage are usually very stable. As mine have been.
  10. Anyway it's a customers world, but I would prefer to spend some more money e.g. on a TAS600 (TCAS I) systems seriously reduced in price now then going for a full glass option...but that's just me.... So as Cris pointed out 7K $ I think is a very good price for this product....I hope Aspen will be in for a long time as we all will benefit from more competitors.... rgds Luc
  11. Quote: N4352H The Aspen is ~12-14K. It is definitlely less money. But as always you do get what you pay for. It may indicate a cash strapped company with questionable future. Also the product suffers way too many random failures. This is a major sticking point. Aspen says its improper installations. I personally think its lack of quality control in hardware and software. It seems they rush to bring product out without thoroughly developing it. They shift R&D to the consumer by experimenting in the field trying to get it right. The Sandel, as you indicated, does offer a nice blend of the round gauges in a digital solid state instrument. I have not read any negative review of their product. With the exception of the lamp needing to be changed annually in their earlier product the SN3308. Their new indicator the SN3500 is top notch. They are also selected by air forces worldwide and by NASA. I don't know how these selections are made. But I'm sure quality of the instrument has to be paramount.
  12. Sorry your correct yes the SA4550 was build for the bigger turbo-props, jets with ADI's. The gyro info is coming from external in this case. I never understood why sandel doesn't put a AHRS in its smaller SN3500 to make KI256 replacement. http://www.sandel.com/Sandel_SA4550_EADI_datasheet_1006.pdf I am sure they already can generate all synoptics etc....They do this in reversionary mode the problem is they will never get it certified as primary as long there is not another (second gyro or AHRS) available....Look at the ASPEN's with two screens and two AHRS..... I am convinced they are thinking on this right now..but hesitating if the market is there..;-))))
  13. Quote: allsmiles Maybe I'm not understanding correctly, but aren't you describling the Aspen Unit with the EA 100 or G-500 unit with their autopilot converter?
  14. Quote: allsmiles We are lucky in a way because the Mooney has built in redundancy with vacuum AI and electric HSI. Our main concern is a vacuum failure which can easily be mitigated without settling for a PFD. There are better options. What I'd love to see is a solid state digital analogue presentation primary AI that will replace the KI256 with all its ap fd functions. I prefer my existing asi, altimeter, tc and vsi. Having said that I'm sure they can bring to market a such product and give us options. AI only or AI +EHSI or AI+EHSI+ASI etc etc. Make it modular like that so we can choose to add. I hope somebody's listening!
  15. Quote: M016576 Thanks Dave, took me a year looking around ..luckely there are still people driving the economy by wanting the latest best...etc...we poorer souls can only profit from it downstream ...;-)))
  16. Quote: flyby201 Thanks all. We checked for any runaway limit switch type problem yesterday and it all checked out ok. I'll have to check back thru the logs, but I'm pretty sure gear motor has been overhauled, but how long ago I don't know off the top of my head. Will check tonight.
  17. I am not going to join this discussion as I am riding on a wave of joy......see the sandel thread...I am steamed glass jocky soon
  18. Good choice. You are lucky.
  19. Guys, I think I am a very....lucky........I found a SN3500 LED unit for a very reasonable price (it's a 28V unit but this is no problem with DC/DC converter).....I believe this unit is wonderfull. Build like a tank. The install will be programmed for fall (I don't wanna ground my bird when the weather starts improving). My bird was in teh avionics shop, great service good techinicians I loved it.....I hardly can believe it. I am very very happy....and feel very fortunate that all my KFC150, HSI and other avionics issues are solved and no major componants are broken (some miswiring when my bird was re-assembled)....Oooooooh man what a day!!!.. The SN3500 comes from a propjet only 160 Hrs on it jeeeeeeees....Sorry Aspen, Garmin or Avydine...mucho dinero for me...my OPS capability will be the same though...;-)
  20. My engine was overhauled at LOMA they receive engines from all over the world , in addition you could check with Röder Präzision in Germany they did my fuel servo very good quality....They do also engine overhauls, I hear good things about them ........ http://www.rp-eg.de/index.php?id=motoren&L=1 Roder has an established reputation for a long time already... I can imagine that shipment cost and warranty claims may become difficult when shipping overseas..no...? rgds Luc
  21. Thanks Ross, it reminds me too much at the times (late nineties) I was in Toulouse France with Airbus enjoying the food and wine (canard a l'orange) during my training...;-)
  22. Quote: Shadrach No you were very clear, and I understand that a fighter has a much more varied ops regime with in a much large envelope compared to a civilian passenger jet. I just do not understand how an ASI reading is a superior metric to a device that literally tells you when your approaching critical AOA as well as allows you to interpolate ideal AOA for an approach (or am I misunderstanding what the instrument can do?).
  23. AoA indications would be real nice to have as redundancy/back-up support etc...I think...if affordable.. .AOA is heavily used in modern transport jets. The modern buses all have Alpha floor protections..to trigger ToGa in normal flight control law mode e.g. when pulling hard on the stick e.g terrain avoidance maneuvre. In the case of the Air France jet the degradation of the flight control laws (due to the icing airspeed invalid etc..) was not taken into account A/P disconnect and auto thrust disengaged. When normal law is not available you still can fully stall the aircraft..which happened 3 minutes long....A simple AoA indication on the PFD would have reminded the crew of the basic aerodynamic principles......A comment I hear often lately if an ex-military pilot would have been in the cockpit, this may not have happened....So yes AoA indications to crew are important (and not only as part of the flight control computer/calculation inputs...).... A lot of lessons (on all subjects) will be learned from this sad tragedy...........
  24. Ben, did you check this company in Belgium? http://www.loma-air.com/
  25. Why didn't your A/P took pictures of the frame when it was open..? From a seventies bird you may expect some mild corrosion. The fibreglass insulation is a pain, and is better replaced, The Pilot lower side is the most suspected part...... However looking at our pictures the primer still looks good inside! Anyway on a 30 year old plane there is always a certain risk factor to budget for.........Hve the left lower panle pulled and you will have a piece of mind....Fuel leaks are visible with blue, brown strains.... rgds Luc
