  1. I like that HopePilot, I think it would go a long way if we all just treat each other with respect, if you wouldn't talk like that to my face then you shouldn's type it. I am and allways will be a Mooniac even though I had to break the rule and forced to sell mine.. for the time being....
  2. Welcome, are you hangering in heber?
  3. I bought her in a partnership and it went kinda bad, so I have to do the one thing I don't want to do.. Sell my 67F with a brand new prop, and great not good but great engine. Great paint (IMO), brand new prop, GNS430, new seats, needs glass on the sides, but the engine is in the best shape it could ever be. Wish this day never came, and wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy but it is what it is.. I can't get my self to even fly anything eles... So I guess I will return to the skys when I can get my own.. She's at 36U if you would like to see and fly my baby let me know, even though I'm in AK I can arrange a pilot to meet you and take you on a flight.
  4. Quote: sleepingsquirrel Before I fly all the way to AK ( which is further than Arkansas,AR,AK ,my mistake ) , do you mean you can get me a tailwheel installed on my Mooney? Im not kidding because I'm sure that extraordinary pilots require extraordinary A&Ps who can do anything. If my Mooney just had a tailwheel , I could convince myself that I was flying an affordable P51 Mustang. If you could get me a tailwheel on My Mooney why can't you get them to put it on floats, I bet an amphib Mooney would be worth its' weight in gold in Alaska. It would still be faster than a Cessna with those tundra tires. Would any of these mods become illegal upon returning to the lower 48? If you mean that you could arrange a taillwheel endorsement , I would fly there if you could just have the Tweto girls fawn over me like they do the young ,bold pilots? What should I bring for the potlatch? I know to bring duct tape for the A&Ps.
  5. Quote: 201Pilot Even with the narrator's attempts to create drama, Flying Wild Alaska is entertaining. Beautiful scenery, nice airplanes, even if there are no Mooneys.....sure wold hate to see what some of those bush strips would do to my J.....ouch!
  6. Quote: N4352H Ice? Zero viz? Mountain obscuration, landing on grizzly bear infested beaches? This is your guy. There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old-bold pilots. www.youtube.com Alaska Wing Men : Explosive Cargo : MON JAN 11 8p et/pt : http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel
  7. I live in AK and would love to get the chance to meet up with some from the board, soory to those that PM'd me but it's been a very busy year. I could make it possible for you to get your tailwheel while your hear. Let me know and I will try my best to make it happen.
  8. Quote: Immelman Regarding Mooney stalls.. Some caution is advised here, here is why: 1. Mooneys, in my opinion, have a rather small rudder and reduced rudder authority compared to other light single engine airplanes and trainers. When doing stalls power-on, for example, I suggest not going above cruise power (65-70% or so). The reason is that you may not be able to remain coordinated with full right rudder approaching the stall at higher power settings. 2. Stall *recovery* is quick and easy. The pre-stall buffet is a nice aerodynamic warning. However, if you hold it into a full stall there can be the tendency for a wing to drop, and because of the smaller rudder it takes time to bring the wing back up vs. entering an incipient spin. In my airplane a wing will drop even if coordination is proper and the 'full' stall held. Again, promptly reducing angle of attack will break the stall -- I'm talking about intentionally taking it just a bit further. 3. Mooney's are not, of course, approved for spins. Per part 23 requirements, the factory had to demonstrate that a spin was recoverable to 1 turn or 3 seconds, which ever comes first. Beyond that, there's no guarantee.
  9. Try pulling down a bit, that's what I have to do to make mine work. Would love to know how to fix it right with out drilling a hole in the top of the cabin...
  10. And one more thing Mooneys love the thin air they were built to fly high....
  11. A n/a F will do the job... I flew mine around the high uintas for about 500hrs and she did all I wanted her to do and more. How long are the strips you plan on using? If they are 5k then you will be fine at gross, even hot she won't climb fast but she will still climb, if you want more saftey then keep it light. I flew out of alot of strips that were 5-7K and in the 90's and never had any issues, the highest DA I have flown out of at near gross was 11,200 and the climb sucked almost not there but she still climbed. Saying that if I had the money to support a turbo or normalized F I would have one..
  12. Cause this was my 3rd gen failure, I could write two more of these not as scarry but still not the best. All turned out ok tho... Alternator's are more reliable. If they weren't that's not what the new mooney would come with. I also have replaced the regulator.
  13. I don't think that overhauling a gen is being cheap, just not the best decsion you can make, I think that an alt is better, more reliable.
  14. Lasar 707-263-0581
  15. I have had to replace mine but can't remember the exact size, I would take the other out and take it to a hardware strore and match it up that way, you still have one right? If not call Lasar and they will tell you off the top of their heads.
  16. I would think that not only the prob would get nicks but the gear, what prop do you have? I would like to hear more about what you can put your mooney in, I have allways been able to go to asph strips but now I would love to be able to fly into gravel. Providing that I won't ruin a prop.
  17. Ok here’s a never again for you all…. I agreed to make a flight for a friend from bear lake to Torrington WY to a livestock auction that I had wanted to go to for years so when I had the chance I jumped at splitting the cost’s. I woke up at 6 to take off from Heber to Bear Lake airport, when I left Heber I thought that I was picking up two others so I topped the tanks, flew the 40 mins to Bear Lake, and upon arrival I saw there were three. So I asked the man that I had made the arrangements with if all three were going and he said “ya you told me you had four seats” And I did tell him that thinking if he were taking a fourth then I could take much less fuel and all would be good. I told him that I thought there was only going to be two so I filled all 64 gal of fuel and hadn’t burned much of anything on the flight up, but it would be OK, should have told them to leave the fourth behind but didn’t want to disappoint someone. So we loaded up and took off, using about 4,500ft of a 6K runway. It was very hot and my climb rate was right about 400FPM MAX. Had to circle to climb high enough to get out of the valley and started the trek east. We landed at Torrington WY with no big deal other than being much slower than I planed. And a 20KT crosswind that I hadn’t done with the plane that heavy. We got out of the auction house at 4PM and went strait to the airport were I fueled the airplane and got it ready for the flight, I put it at 50 gal thinking that would be plenty to get us to Bear Lake so that we would be as light as possible. We took off and right after rotation a small bird went through my prop arch and struck the windshield right at my face and I ducked. The guys behind me ducked too, they said if I was trying to get out of the way they wanted to move too. The climb out was very slow and thought for a moment that it wasn’t going to work after being startled by the bird strike and wondering if he hit the prop, but I had no choice we were flying if I wanted to or not, came close to a few water towers and got a good climb going headed back to Bear Lake. After about 45mins in flight I saw that the GEN had failed, we were on flight following so I called them to tell them what had happened. I told them that I was going on as planned and that I would be turning off all equipment that wasn’t necessary, off goes the no. 2 com radio, the transponder, the fuel flow, the engine analyzer, everything but the 430 and would be –D- Bear Lake. They told me that was all good and offered an alt airport, but I told them that all was OK and we would just go on (didn’t want the first flight for the pass, to be a bad one and wanted them to think this was no big deal and all would be fine, BIG MISTAKE) We flew on hit a few rotors off of a few mountains, but all in all a smooth flight. Once I saw Bear Lake airport, I trimmed the airplane and went in as fast as I could by this time 2.5+hrs later after the gen gave up the go, I wanted on the ground NOW.. It was dusk at the time we landed and it wasn’t a big deal, and the guy that run the airport told me that, at that time at dark the runways lit themselves and they were not pilot controlled. ( I was worried that we would land after dark, and I wouldn’t be able to find the airport without turning on the lighting.) So silly me had to work the next day, and had to get back to Heber, calling someone that late to come and get me wasn’t an option and a rental car wasn’t available. So I (being young and dumb) asked if he had a battery charger, and he said yes so I pulled the battery out and put it on the charger for about 1HR. By now its black and I feel like I have no choice but to go back with no lighting, so that’s what I did…. In hind site I should have killed three others from my decisions, and I always think of this, it scared me enough that it happened a year ago and this is the first I have talked about it (please don’t tell my wife about this) I flew to Heber as fast as I could turned on the lighting as soon as I could and kept it lit. Until I was on the ground, in the hanger I just sat and looked at my wonderful Mooney that despite my very bad judgments that day got me through it not cause I knew what I was doing but because she loved me….. I truly believe that the confidence in my airplane helped me through and to keep flying no matter what was wrong is what saved me on that scary night flight, no lights, just one comm., black outside and in…. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest; many many big mistakes were made and trust me I learned more on this flight than my previous 400 hrs… John Now tell me if you would rather have a gen or an ALT……
  18. I have had 3 gen fail on me, maybe I should write a post on one that would change some minds. But alas I still have a gen, thanks to a partnership that has now been expired.....
  19. Glad to here another learning how great a mooney is... Wish I could make it to Oshkosh but its a bit far, and I can't take that much time off... Maybe we need a AK mooney fly in!
  20. Its done on many tri airplanes but looking at most ski's they look to big to make go into the doors, what do you think.... I think I just need to figure out how to make it a tailwheel then it would work right? Just board and thinking of how I can get into all of these airports that are loose gravel during summer..
  21. Well I don't think that you would have to worry about any airplane looking like yours. Try it, I will fly with you but it would have to be down there and not up here we are starting to get winter, I think the 160MPH wind at 20 deg could get a bit cold.
  22. Behind the pass right knee?? Just thinking out lout as I need the same thing and am looking for the best resulte.. My windlace needs alot of work, it is falling apart, but have little to none to put into the Mooney... what would you do?
