  1. Good luck with that....take lots of pictures. About 5 years ago, the MAPA convention was in Las Vegas, and looking down on a single row of about 80 Mooney's, from the observation deck, was quite a sight. There were probably another 40 or so Mooney's there, but they couldn't fit into that amazing single row. Took my breath away. I'm sure someone has some great pictures, but sadly, not me.
  2. That 201 MPH number came from Marketing, not Engineering, and we all understand about sales people....don' we? According to Bill Kromer, former Mooney President, MAPA Director, and long time Mooney factory test pilot, the 201 may have hit that number once, but the conditions were sooooo optimized, as to to un-worldly. My MSE, right out of the factory, would give me 168 KTAS full out. Now, it's lost about 5 kts, while I've gained about 10 pounds. Could there be a correlation?
  3. From the MT-Prop people at SNF last week: Cost for all Lyc IO-360 engine props is $9,500....Spinner is $1,250....Shipping is free, less 10% when you mention SNF - but only for a short time. It is the Scimitar design blade, spinner and prop weight is 46 libs. when installed, and it replaces both McCauley and Hartzell props. Claims almost vibration free, bonded on stainless steel edge for excellent corrosion/erosion protection, unlimited blade life, major inside and outside noise reduction, and equal or better preformance. Plus.......it looks cool! MT-Propeller USA, DeLand, FL, 386-736-7762. Caveat Emptor, as usual.
  4. Realize that when we say we're keeping our cowl flaps in trail, that's only slightly open, not completely open. Good baffling, and not folding your baffling over when putting the cowl on, makes a big difference. I run under 340 on all CHTs at 6-8000 ft, WOT and 2,500 RPM. Usually about 164 KTAS.
  5. I'd be interested in what Bill Cox paid for his exhaust system, and how many customers really take advantage of the 60 day return policy, even after the install and take off costs, plus looking for another exhaust system. Caveat Emptor, my friends!
  6. Excellent advise, Scott. I keep my cowl flaps in tail much of the time, in cruise. Keeps the CHT a bit cooler, and has zero impact on TAS.
  7. I've been hearing exactly the same thing about the Power Flow. A minimum of 5 kts, and maybe up to 8 kts, on the carburated C's......and zero on the J's.
  8. Quote: JimR Very interesting, Gary. Thanks for the update. I'm sure that that STC will generate a lot of interest. If speed increases with the cube root of power, however, I wouldn't expect to see an awful lot of a speed gain from the extra 10 horse power. The rate of climb increase will probably be more significant than the speed gain.
  9. Quote: mooniac58 A Lycoming rep (and she was cute too might I add) was poking around our hangars in Kona a few months back. She dropped all kinds of brochures about the new engines and such with roller tappets, etc. She said they were seeing upwards of 15 horsepower increase with this modification but the results were not "official" yet. Anyone else find truth in this? If so, perhaps 15-20 ponies would help justify the 9 AMU? Anyone know what kind of KTAS boost one might see on a J model with another 15HP? Perhaps with this and a LowPresti cowling I could actually get the 172 KTAS that Mooney claimed the M20J 201 could do?
  10. Hey, nothing wrong with living well!
  11. Ditto on Willmar....and I've heard nothing but great reports!
  12. You might also try calling Bill Wheat at the factory. He may be able to fax you a copy of the schematic you need. These guys sell discounted manuals, as well. http://www.esscoaircraft.com/Mooney_Maintenance_Parts_Manuals_s/5202.htm
  13. Excellent rewview, Knute! Thanks. I imagine your take off roll was reduced as well.
  14. Too bad some of you missed Carol Ann, who gave a great program. Over 42 people attended, 20 Mooneys, 1 Long Easy, and 1 Bonanza.....can't keep out the riff-raff. So try and make the May 9th get together at Allison's Fly By Cafe in St. Augustine (KSGI). 11:30 AM.
  15. Best part is our airbase can park right off the coast of where the action is. And...Without you air force guys we wouldn't have anyone to beat up on during BFM dets.
  16. Among military fighter pilots, "puke" is not really a negative. After almost ten years in the Air Force, flying what was originally a Navy plane, I have a lot of respect for Naval Aviators. I was accepted by the Navy before I was accepted by the Air Force. It's just that I preferred going to the stag bar, or home, after a flight, rather than spending months on a big boat with no booze, few women, and a mind boggling, old fashioned, hierarchy.
  17. "I thought it might've been just me." Not by a loooooong shot! It's quite a large club.
  18. I believe Tom at Top Gun in CA has one on his J, and is working on an STC for it. http://www.topgunaviation.net/topgunaviation/index.html
  19. Terry....Navy pukes are some good pilots, but most of them have no sense of humor ;-)
  20. What auto pilot do you have? Does the price include installation of a GPSS unit? If so, it's about right. If you're pulling the 94 and 155A out, they shound get you about $3K.
  21. I use my tie down ring to ground the plane while refueling. Beats wearing a hole in the expensive exhaust pipe.
  22. aso.com should keep yo on-line shopping for awaile.
  23. I bit more about what CarolAnn is all about: Dear Gary, We’re so glad that you followed our flight. We’ve heard so many stories of people who lost sleep during our world record attempt as they watched the SPOT fly around the world. It’s been as much fun to hear your stories about following our flight as it has been to tell you all about it. World Record Made Official Well, we are now proud and happy to announce that the World Record has been ratified by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale! As of March 16, 2009, our speed of 115.35 mph, or 185.6 kilometers per hour, is the new westbound around the world speed record for piston engine landplanes with take off weight 1000 to 1750 kg. *Picture: From Left Carol Foy, Art Greenfield, Director of Contest and Records, National Aeronautic Association, and CarolAnn Garratt at the Spring Awards Luncheon in Arlington, VA. The US Record was announced in January and we received our award from the National Aeronautic Association at their awards banquet in Arlington, VA on March 26th. Click here to visit the NAA website. 24. Ditto on a portable unit, unless you have $$$ to burn.
  25. CarolAnn has one heck of a story to tell, folks. Don't miss this one! PS: Don't plan on fuel at KSEF....with new ownership, their prices have skyrocketed.
