  1. So the brazed one is an actual Mooney part! Seems like you could get a lot more life out of the brazed one. The current replacement is a joke, it's a $45 rod end with a $100 hole drilled in it. No support, drilled hole shortly goes oblong. Imagine a solid rod end with machined flats with washers brazed on. Has to last a bit longer than what is offered today. What year and type of mooney did you remove the brazed rod end?
  2. It's just the rod end that got worn, very low time on the steering horn, the horn is fine
  3. It's an old plane, lots of rod ends with wear that adds up. Couple of spots had a lot of wear causing slop in the nose wheel steering. Just trying to replace parts with the most wear. Seems that through my research a better part may have been used before that was more resistant to wear. The rod end being sold today as the replacement part is not as good as what I suspect was an earlier design. Or did someone see this as a poor design and improved on it?
  4. I'm trying to resurrect my 64 m20e serial #311. Hasn't flown in 4 yrs. Lots of play in the nose wheel, logs show a fairly recent overhauled lasar steering horn installed. That part is ok. However it was parked outside tail into the wind with no rudder lock. The rod ends took a beating. Examining the steering horn assy, looks like most of the play was in the upper center rod end. Looked pretty cheesy, hollow rod end with a hole drilled in it. Appears that that hole double or tripples the price of that rod end. IPC 203 part number 720014, IPC 205 part number 914012-013. IPC 202 shows it, but no part number. While doing a google search, I found a part at texas salvage that looked like a better older style part, today being substituted with a lesser part with a hole drilled in it. The "better" part is also worn, but I would like to find a new part like this. This part on the ball bushing has written heim F31-14a Mooney 914030. Has flat spots machined to the sides and 2 washers brazed. Looks like it would wear better than the part number used today, the new one just flops around orcwill shortly after installation. Any thoughts opinions? Get a regular rod end an modify? Is this an original part before cost savings were implemented? Thanks Glenn
  5. Doing all by the book. Traceable hardware, calibrated torque wrench, proper safety wire, and all I am doing is the cage tension bolt, not a wing attach bolt. Lots of people trying to play mechanic with good intentions...... Glenn
  6. I'm doing sb208 insulation and tubing corrosion sb. Bolts looked rough so I am replacing the bolts. Wing nuts not part of sb, but if mine look rough, I will change them. Doing this myself. First time aircraft owner, halfway through getting my pilots license, I'm an a&p with very little GA experience. Lots of work to do on my 64 m20e that hasn't flown in 5 yrs
  7. Lasar carried both lengths, they were really cheap, lasar was out of stock, checked mooney, they had both lengths and much cheaper. Just got them last week. Dont forget the thin washers Glenn
  8. My 1964 m20e IPC calls for AN7H-16A Tension bolts, and that is what was installed. What am I suppose to reinstall?
  9. i decided not to pull the tail on my old bird. Built my own Jack and used an engine hoist with a nylon strap around the nose of the engine case. The hoist loop was just sheet metal on the engine case, barely strong enough for engine, but not lifting the plane also. I bought the 3' long strap at farm and fleet. Very little room for the right g to fish it through, could always cut ring off, fish nylon through and put a proper removable hoist ring on it
  10. Thank you so much, I'm on my way to Aircraft Spruce and then Ito my Hangar wanted to save myself a trip
  11. And for the control tube phenolic blocks?
  12. What grease do you use for the gear?
  13. I've got the old manual with the grease listings in mil spec numbers, just curious what the final word on equivalents is and if I must mix anything into the grease. Thanks
  14. Good morning, Been lurking for a while, finally got my plane into a hangar and starting to resurrect my 1964 m20e, What is the final word on landing gear grease type and control tube phenolic block lubricant? Do I need to mix anything into the grease? How many grease fittings on the gear? Plane is located in chicago suburbs, so hot and cold climate. Thanks! Glenn 1964 m20e
  15. I'm at oshkosh, was planning to find where all the mooneys are parked after the airshow today before I go home. Thanks Glenn 1964 M20E project
  16. I will be attaching some streamers to my homemade devices. Waiting for a hangar also
  17. Thanks for the tip, that will be my next project
  18. I will have to try the plastic owl Thanks Glenn
  19. My project for today was making a guest lock and a device to keep birds from landing on my vertical stabilizer and crapping all over the place. Any other ideas to keep the birds away from my bird? Unfortunately I'm just under a canopy. Glenn 64 m20e Villa park, IL
  20. Insurance and anxiety, that's me right now. I bought a fixer upper 64 m20e dont expect it to fly for another year. I am 48 and working on my ppl, about to solo in a c172, expect to have my license by the end if the year. I'm afraid to call the insurance companies. Thought about insuring it while working on it. Any idea which company I should call. What could I expect to pay as a new pilot? Thanks Glenn Villa park, IL
  21. The engine has under 700 hrs. Prop was overhauled not too long ago and thanks were resealed. I know I have to look at everything again because it's been sitting, but for now I think the airframe has been quite neglected and I have a little bit of catching up to do with that. Glenn
  22. The airframe needs a bit of work, but Shane gave me the confidence that I could manage it myself. Focus for now is cleaning it up(nests and poop in the tail), accessing the airframe, going over the rods and rod ends. Lubricate everything, acf50 I don't know when I'm going to have time to do my flight training. Very excited about working on this bird. Glenn
  23. Hi. I'm new to the forum. Been lurking while I sort of fell into a 64 m20e basket case. I have spent the last few weeks inspecting the aircraft before purchase. I am A&P , very little experience in GA, been at American airlines for most of my career. This aircraft was fairly well maintained up until several years ago when prev owner got tired of costly thorough annuals.after nearly a decade of short cut annuals, The owner got what he paid for. Now he had a basket case on his hands and I got it for a bargain.....I think. It is currently 4 yrs out of annual. Plan on going through the whole aircraft and bring it up to a safe condition. I visited the Mooney center in New Jersey. The guys there were great, gave me tips and a lot of confidence to move fwd with this plane. I dont have a pilots license, I'm 10 hrs into my training in a 172. I'm in the Chicago area, aircraft is currently at KLOT Louis univ airport. It's parked under the canopy is out there, feel free to stop by and chat I will be out there a lot trying to resurrect this aircraft. Glenn Villa park, IL
